Talk-radio host Michael Savage says America can't survive another four years of Barack Obama, and he's putting his money where his mouth is, offering Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich $1 million to drop out of the race within 72 hours.

Savage says that while rival Mitt Romney is not entirely satisfying to conservatives, the former Massachusetts governor can beat Obama. Gingrich, on the other hand, according to Savage, is "unelectable."

"If Newt Gingrich really loves this country as much as he says he does, if he really wants what is best for America, he will set his ego aside, call me and accept my offer," Savage wrote on his website today.

"His continued candidacy spells nothing but ruin for conservatives, Republicans and all true American patriots," he continued. "One million dollars in exchange for preserving the nation, Newt. I say take the money … and don't run."

Savage noted that the Republican presidential field has come down to two candidates who have a real chance of getting the nomination, Gingrich and Romney.

"While it's true that Romney is not as strong a conservative as many would like him to be, the most pressing issue before America today is defeating Barack Obama," he said. "And that is something Newt Gingrich cannot do."

Savage outlined the reasons he believes Gingrich can't win the general election:

• When he was speaker of the House, he failed to deliver on his so-called Contract with America;
• He made ads with Nancy Pelosi promoting the false theory of global warming;
• He's in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens;
• He's taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two of the most corrupt financial institutions in history;
• He's cheated on two wives, which will destroy his chances among female voters;
• He called the Republican plan to reform Medicare "right-wing social engineering";
• In a presidential debate against Obama, regardless of how well he does, on television he will come off badly compared to Obama and look like nothing more than what he is: A fat, old white man.

Last week on his nationally syndicated show, Savage warned that if Obama wins re-election, America will become like Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's dictatorship.

Savage's show airs live Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern. It can be heard online through stations such as WTNT in the nation's capital.

As WND reported, Savage's show is ranked No. 2 in listenership among all talk-radio shows streamed on the Internet, according to Talk Stream Live.

Written by former Marine Corporal James M. Schmidt, in 1987 when stationed in Washington D.C., it was pounded out on a typewriter while awaiting the commanding officer's Christmas holiday decoration inspection. It was originally title "Merry Christmas, My Friend", and was an instant success that reportedly brought tears to the eyes of the barracks Commander who ordered it distributed to everyone he knew. It appeared in the barracks publication Pass in Review in December 1987 and Leatherneck Magazine in December 1991.

The poem was recorded as a tribute by Father Ted Berndt, a former Marine and Purple Heart recipient during World War II, currently residing in Dousman, Wisconsin for his daughter Ellen Stout, a Clear Channel radio personality.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, MY FRIEND

'Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one-bedroom house made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney, with presents to give
and to see just who in this home did live.

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand.
On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind,
a sobering thought soon came to my mind.
For this house was different, unlike any I'd seen.
This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I'd heard stories about them, I had to see more,
so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene,
Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine.
Was this the hero, of whom I'd just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan.
I soon understood, this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night,
owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year,
because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.

He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice,
"Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice
I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more.
My life is my God, my country, my Corps."

With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still.
I noticed he shivered from the cold night's chill.
So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
and covered this Marine from his toes to his head.
Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold,
with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold.
And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
and for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn't want to leave him so quiet in the night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure,
said "Carry on, Santa, it's Christmas Day, all secure."
One look at my watch and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight.

The Four Part Process Leading to Sustainable Development

So how is this wrenching transformation being put into place? There are four very specific routes being used. In the rural areas it’s called the Wildlands Project. In the cities it’s called smart growth. In business it’s called Public/Private Partnerships. And in government it’s called stakeholder councils and non-elected boards and regional government.

The Wildlands Project was the brainchild of Earth First’s Dave Foreman and it literally calls for the “re-wilding” of 50% of all the land in every state – back to the way it was before Christopher Columbus set foot on this land. It is a diabolical plan to herd humans off the rural lands and into human settlements. Crazy you say! Yes. Impossible? Not so fast. From the demented mind of Foreman, the plan became the blueprint for the UN’s Biodiversity Treaty. So now the scheme is international in scope. But how do you remove people from the land? One step at a time. Let’s begin with a biosphere reserve. A national park will do. A huge place where there is no human activity. How about Yellowstone National Park? Then you establish a buffer zone around the reserve. Inside the buffer only limited human activity is allowed. Slowly, you squeeze until you squash that human activity. Once accomplished, you extend the area of the biosphere to the limits of the former buffer area – and then you create a new buffer zone around the now larger biosphere and start the process over again. In that way, the Biosphere Reserve acts like a cancer cell, ever expanding, until all human activity is stopped. And there are many tools in place to stop human activity and grow the reserve. Push back livestock’s access to riverbanks on ranches; 300 feet ought to do it.

When the cattle can’t reach the stream, the rancher can’t water them — he goes out of business. Lock away natural resources by creating national parks. It shuts down the mines — and they go out of business. Invent a Spotted Owl shortage and pretend it can’t live in a forest where timber is cut. Shut off the forest. Then, when no trees are cut, there’s nothing to feed the mills and then there are no jobs, and — they go out of business. Locking away land cuts the tax base. Eventually the town dies. Keep it up and there is nothing to keep the people on the land – so they head to the cities. The wilderness grows – just like Dave Foreman planned.

It comes in many names and many programs. Heritage areas, land management, wolf and bear reintroduction, rails to trails, conservation easements, open space, and many more. Each of these programs is designed to make it just a little harder to live on the land – a little more expensive – a little more hopeless. Now tell me how they can deny that the process is herding people into human habitat areas?

In the West, where vast areas of open space make it easy to impose such policies there are several programs underway to remove humans from the land. Today, there are at least 31 Wildlands projects underway, locking away more than 40 percent of the nation’s land. The Alaska Wildlands Project seeks to lock away and control almost the entire state. In Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, parts of North and South Dakota, parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, Utah, and more there are at least 22

Wildlands Projects underway. For example, one project called Yukon to Yellowstone (Y2Y) – creates a 2000 mile no-man’s land corridor from the Arctic to Yellowstone. East of the Mississippi, there are at least nine Wildlands projects, covering Maine, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Ohio,Virginia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Watch for names of Wildlands Projects like Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Appalachian Restoration Project and Piedmont Wildlands Project.

The second path is called Smart Growth. After they herd you into the city, they have more plans for you in regimented and dense urban communities. They put a line around the city and tell you no growth can take place outside that line. Urban sprawl, they say disdainfully. They refuse to build more roads as a ploy to get you out of your car into public transportation, restricting mobility.

Because there is a restriction on space inside the controlled city limits there is a shortage of houses, so prices go up. That means populations will have to be controlled, because now there is a shortage of land.

Cities are now passing “green” regulations, forcing homeowners to meet strict guidelines for making their homes environmentally compliant, using specific building materials, forcing roof replacements, demanding replacement of appliances, and more. In Oakland, California, such restrictions with compliance demanded in just a matter of a few years will cost each homeowner an estimated $36,000. The Cap-N-Trade bill contains a whole section on such restrictions for the nation.

Third, inside the human habitat areas, government is controlled by an elite ruling class called stake holder councils.

These are mostly nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, who, like thieves in the night, just show up to stake their claim to enforce their own private agendas. The function of legitimate government within the system will be simply to enforce the dictates of the councils.

The councils are unelected, but all powerful. They are controlled by a small minority in the community, but they are all powerful. They will make you ask permission (usually denied) for anything necessary to live in the community. They destroy business. They dictate the number of outlets a business may have in a community, no matter what the population demands. For example, in San Francisco there can only be seven McDonalds. Period.

They can dictate the kind of building materials you can use in your home – or whether you can build on your property at all. Then, if they do grant a permit for building, they might not decide to let you acquire water and electricity for your new home – and they may or may not give you a reason for being turned down.

They can dictate that you get the proper exercise – as determined by the government. Again, San Francisco is building a new federal building – the greenest ever built. The elevators will only stop on every third floor so riders are forced to use stairs – for their own health, of course.

These councils fit almost perfectly the definition of a State Soviet; a system of councils that report to an apex council and then implement a predetermined outcome. Soviets are the operating mechanism of a government-controlled economy.

The fourth path is Public/Private Partnerships. Today, many freedom organizations are presenting PPPs as free enterprise and a private answer for keeping taxes down by using business to make a better society. In truth, many PPPs are nothing more than government-sanctioned monopolies in which a few businesses are granted special favors like tax breaks, the power of eminent domain, non-compete clauses and specific guarantees for return on their investments.

That means they can charge what they want and they can use the power of government to put competition out of business. That is not free enterprise.

And it is these global corporations that are pushing the green agenda.

For example, using government to ban its own product, General Electric is forcing the mercury-laden green light bulb on you, costing 5 times the price of incandescent bulbs. Such is the reality of green industry. PPPs are building the Trans Texas Corridor, using eminent domain to take more than 580,000 acres of private land – sanctioned by the partnership with the Texas government. And PPPs are taking over highways and local water treatment plants in communities across the nation. PPPs controlling the water can control water consumption – a major part of the Sustainable Development blueprint.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is the root of the “Free Trade” process and the fuel for PPPs between international corporations and government, thereby creating an “elite” class of “connected” businesses – or what Ayn Rand called “the power of pull.” Success in the PPP world is not based on quality of product and service, but on who you know in high places. To play ball in the PPP game means accepting the mantra of Sustainable Development and helping to implement it, even if it means going against your own product. That’s why Home Depot uses its commercials to oppose cutting down trees and British Petroleum advocates reducing the use of oil. It is not free enterprise, but a Mussolini-type fascism that will only lead to tyranny. And it’s all driven by the Agenda 21 blueprint of Sustainable Development.

Without a doubt Obama and the Democrats would rather run against Newt Gingrich than Mitt Romney.  In poll after poll Mitt wins as the most electable, having the best chance to beat Obama in the general election over anyone else in the GOP field.

So was the ad a mistake… a DNC Oops?  Or are they sly as foxes?  Was this an attempt at gift giving to themselves?

The conservative right faction of the GOP, although almost everyone says that in the end they will vote for whomever to beat Obama, is looking for the ‘real’ most conservative GOP hopeful… to support, which Newt isn’t. So is this an attempt by the DNC to help Gingrich?

Newt might be considered more right of center than moderate Mitt in some areas, but certainly not on personal behavior or ethics.  Romney has been married to the same women, Ann Davies Romney with whom he has raised 5-children, without a hint of scandal and has always been very involved in his church, while keeping both his morals and religion out of the spotlight.  Mitt has political experience as Governor of Massachusetts but is not a career politician nor a beltway insider.  He also has extensive business experience and saved the economically distressed Winter Olympics in Utah with his business know now (a definite positive for where we are as a country).  Gingrich on the other hand is on his third marriage with questionable affairs in-between including with present wife Callista Bisek Gingrich, and has scandal and dissent in his political background as well for the Democrats to dig out later.  Newt is a career politician as well as a Washington insider.

If the GOP were really interested in a tea party candidate or the most conservative candidate for their nominee they would be leaning toward Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann or Ron Paul with his added Libertarian leanings. (Santorum picked up the endorsement of the Secretary of State  of Iowa this week; Michele Bachmann had her best debate performance this past weekend in Iowa in months; and Ron Paul has an incredibly loyal organization on the ground for the Caucuses.)   All three have a chance to surprise the pollsters in Iowa.  And even Rick Perry is further right of center and has some tea party support. But Perry’s campaign continues to flounder even though he did redeem himself somewhat in Saturday’s debate.

Side note:  Perry attacked Mitt Romney for the 7th time, during the Iowa Caucus Debate this past weekend moderated by ABC, on the issue of Romney’s position on the individual mandate in the nation’s new health insurance law, ObamaCare. Perry keeps asserting what Mitt wrote in his book, No Apology (the hardback version), was changed to accommodate a flip-flop for the paperback version release. (Mitt has explained that the book was written two years ago so in light of his candidacy he updated parts of it for the new paperback release since information and issues change.)  Rick Perry has continuously misquoted what Mitt wrote in the hardback version (verified by this writer and several mainstream media news outlets) 7-times now.  Mitt finally had enough and last night said so, asking Perry if he wants to bet $10K.  Perry of courses backed off saying he was not there to bet but to run for office, but did back down.

The leftist controlled mainstream media as well as left-blogosphere seized on the comment and have had a field day with Mitt’s' ‘bet’  comment as soon as the words left his mouth in an attempt to make Mitt look like an out of touch rich guy.  The Romney camp when contacted today said Mitt had finally had enough and obviously knew that Perry was wrong so wouldn’t take the bet. Mitt just wanted to put an end to this on-going erroneous charge.  Come on people… let us stop being manipulated.  Mitt was right to back Perry down.  And if you pay attention, it is Newt who has been caught at Tiffany’s more than once buying very expensive gifts… not Mitt.  Another great media manipulation by Team Obama and their media alliances.

Overall, Newt experienced his first round of being attacked as the latest front-runner. Mitt came out for the first time in the loser category, not because he did badly, but because he wasn’t  as good on his feet and message discipline as he has been in the past, and because of his $10K remark blown out of proportion by the media. And Bachmann came out strong except for one too many positive references about former candidate Herman Cain; people still aren’t ready for that.  All six candidates did fairly well in the Iowa debate and no one missed Huntsman.  Even with Mitt’s bet remark he has a strong organization in Iowa from the 2008 run that shouldn’t be diminished. The road to the White House in 2012 is going to be a long, hard and probably ‘dirty’ road.  Obama has the biggest war chest in history and goes into his second term campaign still virtually un-vetted while the GOP candidates with help from the media are tearing each other apart and doing all the vetting for Team Obama.

Who ultimately gets the GOP nomination is still up for grabs… Even Iowa is still up for grabs. But at least for now Newt should be sending the DNC a Merry Christmas card with a big thank you for their support with this ad!

An interesting series of quotes came from Bob Woodward recently about Al Gore - calling the former Vice President 'taxing' and 'unpleasant' to sit next to after a recent event he shared with the VP. Even worse, Woodward admitted he asked Gore how much the public knows about what went on during the Clinton administration. The answer: 1%, a number Woodward says made him feel 'icky'. Woodward is no stranger to corruption in the White House as he helped expose President Nixon’s crimes and abuse of power to the public.

The Hill reports:

In a speech at the Organization for International Investment’s annual dinner at D.C.’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Thursday, the famed Washington Post journalist, who helped uncover the Watergate scandal, disclosed that he doesn’t enjoy the former vice president as a tablemate.

…

Woodward offered up another tidbit from the conversation with his dinner companion. The investigative reporter asked the politician, more than five years after leaving office, how much the public knows about what went on during the Clinton administration. Gore replied, “One percent.”

Woodward admitted that revelation made him feel a bit icky, saying, “I kind of died inside and have to confess to having an unclean thought.”

With our controlled press, it is interesting to see that German citizens seem to know more about the U.S. political system and environment than the majority of citizens on the streets of America …  No topics are off limit. 

So in reality, socialistic Europe appears to me less politically correct and more open to speaking out than the supposed land of the free… so when did that happen?  (They are also a bit less inhibited about many things.)

Mom kept over sixty years of her private war locked up inside her.

Mom is a survivor.

It was during one of my annual visits to New York when she decided to open up to me. That week in January was so cold: with record breaking minus fifteen-degree temperatures, we decided to stay inside. Besides, being in California for the past two decades left me with thin skin and tolerance, leaving me inadequate to brave the winds.

Mom and I decided to go through her bedroom closet and organize it. Being the taller of the two, I started to take things down from the top shelf. There was a shallow cardboard box wedged in the back corner. The package had a dusty, plastic sheet over it. It seemed clear to me the box may have been there since the move-in from the early 70s'. The carton and I made our way to her bed, where inside was a brown, worn leather portfolio containing photographs. Perhaps Mom forgot it was there but I was intrigued.

I motioned to Mom, "Come over and sit down with me for a minute." She was in the back of her closet admiring a pair of shoes. At eighty-four years old, Mom wouldn't be able to navigate in a heel that tall. We shared a laugh about the impossibility that either one of us could walk in those shoes. Mom joined me at the bed, and that minute turned into four hours. Inside the binder were photos she carried with her from a Deportation Camp in Germany in the year 1945 to Ellis Island, New York in 1949.

Those few hours, sitting on her bed was when I decided to write Mom's memoirs. Her memories are the basis of another story currently in the works. The story I'd like to tell you now is about my journey. How I came about finding the information to go forward to write about Mom's journey and the kindness of many strangers.

One particular black and white photograph I found in the binder piqued my interest-a man seated, wearing a uniform with a Royal crest on his sleeves. On the back, he wrote,

"Mein Lieber Rozi,

Als Erieuchtung.

Ernst Finch

Eutin, Marz 1946"

I asked Mom who Ernst Finch was, and she replied, "He's the soldier who saved my life." There was an awkward silence for what seemed like minutes but was only seconds.

"Ernst Finch," she said again without even turning the photo over to read the inscription. I asked her what he wrote and the translation was something like, "My dear Rozi, with inspiration, his name and Eutin, the name of the city and the year."

"Please tell me what you remember about him," I asked.

"The Germans put us on a train. I don't know where they took us but it was a relief from the marching we did for days. Above us, I heard the roar of plane engines, I think. Suddenly, a loud noise, lights of many colors flashing. Our train was bombed. My cousins and I ran toward the woods. I felt the warm, sticky feel of blood on my neck when I touched it, but I really don't think I felt anything at that point. I was not in pain. I just wanted to run to safety. I ran as far as we could, until I couldn't run anymore. Weak and barely able to breathe, I fell to the ground. I don't know how long I'd been there, but I saw a tank come to me. I remember thinking, 'they'll kill us for sure'. I must have passed out because the next thing I remember was waking up in a hospital bed. At that point, I don't know how much time had passed. In the corner, sitting in a chair, much like in the picture, I see him. Ernst Finch." She pointed to the photo.

She continued with her story, the details pouring out of her like water.

"He told me the story of how his Company saw me, and my two cousins bleeding in the woods. That day was May 3, 1945. He got us Red Cross and placed us in hospitals. He sent soldiers to stand guard for our safety and a few years later, he arranged for my relatives in New York to meet your Dad and I at Ellis Island, in America."

My head was spinning as I absorbed all this new information. 'I must write her story down,' I promised myself. Living three thousand miles away, I knew this wasn't going to be an easy task. So much dialogue would be by telephone. I didn't want it to sound like an interrogation. I'm confident she had a lot of that all those years ago. In the past, the Spielberg Foundation approached Mom for her testimony. She declined them many times. I'm sure she had been questioned extensively, and would not welcome more no matter how many years passed by.

One thought kept plaguing me. I needed to thank this man, Ernst Finch and his family. Mom told me she didn't remember thanking him after the war ended. He at least deserved that much.

And so, when I got back to the comfort of my home computer, my research began. I posted a note to BAOR-British Army Of The Rhine, and included Finch's photo. I posted the same notes and photos to all the British War Museum links I could find. I posted notes to Holocaust websites, and the DP Camp websites. Months went by and I didn't hear back from anyone. I was getting discouraged.

Finally, that September, I received e-mail from a lady in London, England named Lynne Finch. She told me Ernest Finch was her father. My heart raced when I finally thought all these months of research paid off. The pieces fit until she mailed me copies of photographs. Clearly, he was not the same soldier. My photo revealed a short man, with dark hair and eyes. Her father was tall and blond. Defeated but not down, we bonded a lasting friendship to this day. Lynne Finch is still searching for any information on her dad. I do what I can to help.

After many more months of research and "googling," I found a book written about the slave labor camp Muna Lubberstedt Mom was in after Auschwitz. I contacted the author and he kindly sent me the book no charge. It is entirely written in German. Rudy Kahrs has been invaluable to me with research. He sent me copies of letters and pictures and some interpretation of the book he wrote. My next mission is to find someone to read the book to me or take up the German language.

After a few months, I got a response from BAOR's website administrator whose name is Phil.

Phil wrote me, "The uniform Ernst Finch is wearing in the photo shows he was a Warrant Officer. He's someone very important in his Company. He will do more research and get back to me." I heard nothing for a while after.

A few days later, Alan Yates emails me with more information and book recommendations. Alan confirmed what Phil wrote. Ernest Finch was a Warrant Officer, Second Class in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. I'm elated because things are starting to piece together. Alan's months of hard work eventually led to information that Ernst Finch was once Ernst Fink, who fled Germany to go to England to fight with the Kings Army. Several books on the subject list these men and women as "Enemy Aliens."

Alan has been invaluable to me, and my research. If not for him, I don't know that I would have come this far. We have become very good friends but limited only to computer bytes. One day I would very much like to meet Alan Yates in person. I thank Alan every day for his research and persistence. Without him, I doubt I would have been able to connect the dots.

Through more research, we come to find Ernst Fink was a "Dunera Boy." This was a ship by the same name that sailed from England to Australia early on in the war. Great Britain was not all convinced these 'Enemy Aliens' could be trusted, so they sent thousands there. Later on, Britain sent these men and women back to England. Many were sent back to Germany toward war's end to serve as translators in POW camps.

Ernst Fink went back to England, and then sent to France and Germany to defend Great Britain. There he stayed until 1948, serving his Army as an interpreter in Germany and governed over the Deportation Camp my mother was placed in.

For a while this was as far as Alan and I got with information. I fretted, having come so far. How was I going to find where he went? I desperately wanted to thank him for saving my Mom. I tried "Googling" his name but came up short with every spelling variation. Alan was helping but coming up short too. Information slowed down for both of us.

Finally, through Alan Yates's diligence, we found Queen Mary ship registries showing Ernst Finch left England for the USA in 1948. The ship registry showed Ernst's wife name. I decided to "Google" it, and the first thing that Google brought up was an obituary. Ilsa Finch died in 2007. I got Goosebumps all over my body. I felt I was this close to thanking this family.

The obituary listed the names of two nieces living in San Diego. I used LinkedIn and Facebook to send messages. Two days later, I got a response back from one of the nieces. Her mother was Ilsa's great-niece. She offered me her mother's phone number. Indeed, Ernst Finch was her Great Uncle. He had lived in San Diego till 1972, where he died. We spoke at length and I offered my condolences and thanked her for his great deeds.

To think; Ernst Finch, the Officer who saved my mothers life lived only an hour from me. Imagine, if Ernst Finch lived and I found him after 1989, which was when I moved out here? Mom used to come to California every year and stay for six weeks at a time. Imagine if Ernst Finch and Mom reunited? I wonder to this day if it would have been utterly wonderful, awkward or uneventful given the fact that Mom buried her secrets so deep within her.

My research led me to other places with the help of Alan Yates, but I will save them for another time.

*There are many stories like this still out there but they are dwindling as survivors from the Holocaust and WWII are passing away daily.  If you know of someone who has saved their story deep inside talk to them now, listen, write it down.  One of our greatest failings is that we don’t share and pass down our past and that the young people today are no longer interested.  History repeats itself if we do not share it and then learn from it.  Let us all make sure that this never happens again!!

Italy’s welfare minister Elsa Fornero was reduced to tears at a press conference as she outlined tough reforms to pensions contained in the government’s plan to regain control of strained public finances and help solve Europe’s debt crisis.

Under the austerity plan unveiled on Sunday, Italy will raise the minimum pension age for women and men to 66 by 2018, and will scrap annual inflation adjustments for many pensions.

“We had to... and it cost us a lot psychologically... ask for a...” Fornero said, but was unable to complete her sentence as she wiped tears from her eyes.

Prime Minister Mario Monti finished the sentence for her, speaking the word “sacrifice” that she’d been unable say.

Monti has unveiled a 30 billion euro ($51.7 billion) package of austerity measures, raising taxes and increasing the pension age in a drive to shore up Italy’s strained finances and stave off a crisis that threatens to overwhelm the euro zone.

Packed into a single emergency decree which comes into effect before formal parliamentary approval, the measures followed growing pressure for sweeping measures to restore confidence in the euro zone’s third-largest economy.

Monti said the package, divided between 20 billion euros of budget measures over 2012-14 and a further 10 billion euros in measures to boost growth, was painful but necessary.

“We have had to share the sacrifices, but we have made great efforts to share them fairly,” he told a news conference, in which he said he had renounced his own salary as prime minister and economy minister.

The measures come before one of the most crucial weeks since the creation of the single currency more than a decade ago, with European leaders due to meet on Thursday and Friday in Brussels to try to agree a broader rescue plan for the bloc.

Pearl Harbor Day’s Watcher’s Council

Pearl Harbor veteran recalls bewilderment of attack

HONOLULU — Seventy years ago this week, Navy veteran Lou Gore was startled by the muffled thuds of explosions and a burst of commotion while cleaning up from breakfast below deck on the USS Phoenix, a cruiser docked at Pearl Harbor.

Hurrying topside, the 18-year-old seaman second-class was confronted by pandemonium he was unable to immediately comprehend -- flames shooting skyward, roiling clouds of dark, acrid smoke, swarms of fighter-bombers buzzing low overhead.

Within moments that Sunday morning, it became clear that the U.S. Pacific fleet was under attack. As reflexes from training took over, Gore and others aboard the Phoenix jumped into action and began firing back with anti-aircraft guns.

"We didn't know (at first) those were Japanese planes," Gore, now 88 and visiting the islands with nine members of his family, recalled in a recent interview. "We didn't know what was happening. I just did my job."

Gore is one of 100 aging Pearl Harbor Survivors who will attend ceremonies on Wednesday on Oahu marking the 70th anniversary of the Japanese air and naval assault that claimed 2,390 American lives and drew the United States into World War Two.

Nearly half of those who perished were sailors aboard the battleship USS Arizona, which Japanese torpedo bombers sank early in the attack, sending 1,177 of its 1,400-member crew to their deaths.

The USS Arizona Memorial, built over the remains of the ship, now forms a centerpiece of the World War Two Valor in the Pacific National Monument, an historic site administered by the National Park Service.

'BODIES EVERYWHERE'

Gore's vessel, the Phoenix, was anchored a short distance from the stretch of harbor known as Battleship Row, where the Arizona was moored when it was hit.

"I'll never forget watching the ... USS Arizona battleship jumping up out of the water, landing and rolling on its side," Gore said. "There were bodies everywhere. Brooms floating in the water, canisters."

Long after the two-hour surprise attack had ended, the base remained on edge, he recounted. "Everyone was keyed up. After the attack, at night, it wasn't safe to be out. People were shooting at shadows."

The Phoenix, among a handful of light cruisers and other vessels that got out of the harbor during or just after the attack, emerged unscathed.

Besides the nearly 2,400 who were killed, the attack left 1,178 people wounded, sank or heavily damaged a dozen U.S. warships and destroyed 323 aircraft, badly crippling the Pacific fleet.

As has been the practice of past anniversary ceremonies, visiting veterans, relatives and dignitaries will bow their heads for a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. on Wednesday, the time when the attack began, as military jets soar overhead in a "missing-man" formation.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon will render a salute to the fallen crew of the Arizona, and the morning service will end with a "walk of honor" by more than 100 Pearl Harbor Survivors and other World War Two veterans, many of them in their late 80s. The gathering is expected to include seven of the last known 18 survivors from Arizona's crew.

The turnout by Pearl Harbor veterans on Wednesday is expected to be only about half of what it was last year, when about 200 attended.

Mal Middlesworth, former president of the National Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and current publisher of the Pearl Gram, a quarterly newsletter, estimates there are about 2,700 Pearl Harbor veterans still alive.

For Gore, a resident of Seattle, this week marks his first visit to Hawaii since the 1960s, and his first opportunity to personally show his two sons, his daughter and a granddaughter where he was on the morning of the attack.

Gore went on to serve in Okinawa and New Guinea during World War Two and remained in the Navy for 30 years, including a brief stint in Korea and two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He retired as a petty officer first-class.

Despite the tributes he is receiving this year as a Pearl Harbor veteran, Gore insists he is no hero.

"I'm grateful to still be alive. So many lost their lives for no reason. ... I wish I had been able to save more" (lives), he said.

On the Road to the White House 2012… Time for the GOP to Step Up

I watched Governor Mike Huckabee’s forum on Fox News this past  weekend, as I have watched all the GOP debates so far. If you did not see it, here are a couple of good recaps by Jazz Shaw at Hot Air and Doug Mataconis at Outside The Beltway  

Huck’s Forum was a positive event and perhaps the first time we have had to really see and hear, in some depth, what a few of the remaining candidates had to say… and say on an equal playing field.  Each candidate took questions from 3-GOP State Attorneys General (Pam Bondi, Ken Cuccinelli and Scott Pruitt who are all part of the ObamaCare suit)  with Governor Huckabee as the moderator.  Each candidate received exactly the same amount of time and they were also each interviewed one at a time so the viewer saw each from the same perspective.

My focus here is primarily on the current state of the Republican primary race to examine the political strengths and weaknesses of the GOP field and what has to happen for the GOP to have the greatest chance to defeat President Obama.  And Obama’s defeat  is and must be the number one goal of all conservatives, independents and patriotic non-progressive Americans. (I also touch on the effects of the Presidential race on down-ticket campaigning that will be important for the GOP to solidify their control of the House and possibly gain control of the Senate.) I am not focusing on issues or the individual political beliefs of the candidates… on my preference(s).

This is now a two-man/person race and barring a miracle will remain a 2-man race.  Wish all you want but  Huntsman, Perry and Santorum are not going to win.  Bachmann has a slight chance to catch on and Ron Paul, although second or third in many polls and even a possible winner in the Iowa Caucuses probably has also reached his saturation point because of some of his Libertarian views in certain areas,  especially foreign policy and how it affects his approach to situations like Iran.

Pray for a Michele Miracle

I like a lot of what Rick Santorum and Ron Paul have to say. I also have some problems with both of them. But if either of them got the nomination, I would support them enthusiastically. But neither one is going to get the nomination.

That leaves one other candidate – Michele Bachmann.

She's the real deal, folks. She's 100 percent. She's gaffe-proof. She's smarter than Newt, but doesn't brag about it (He’s already choosing his cabinet) half as much. She's honest. She's sincere. And she really believes in what she says.

What we need to pray for prior to the Iowa primary is a Michele Miracle.

Pray fervently for the future of this country – that it should be worthy of the blessings God has bestowed upon it for 235 years.

And ask God for a little miracle this year.

Ask Him to give us Michele.

To be honest… Bachmann and Santorum are the true consistent Conservative candidates and if evangelicals, constitutionalists and tea party members thought that was the highest priority, both their poll numbers would be a lot higher!  So it will take prayer and a miracle to move Michele (or Rick) up in the polls.

But for our purposes here since the race is now between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, the focus needs to be on their strengths and weaknesses and what should be done by each of their campaigns immediately.

What I saw in the Huck Forum was both enlightening and a bit frightening at the same time. The panel  asked some excellent even probing questions. And they pressed the candidates when appropriate for clarifications, as with Governor Perry when they tried to lead him away from his stand on repealing ObamaCare using Executive Order(s), that just wouldn’t be possible. (Something that Michelle Bachmann is very aware of and vocal about and has been ignored every time she has brought it up during the debate series.) The format overall turned out to be a winner giving viewers a good chance to learn more about each candidate.

However, given the reasonable ease for each campaign  to anticipate the general areas of the questions that would be focused on, including the obvious questions that would probably be asked, it was disappointing to watch Romney fumble his way through a couple of his answers. And while Gingrich handled himself better he too could have been more on message and less bloated in his answers.  I’ve heard some say that Newt’s performance outdistanced Mitt’s by a fair amount and others say they were pretty even, just a matter of style.

My thoughts then turned to the current state of each campaign’s organization and fund-raising performance. Here is where Romney has it all over Gingrich, and when it comes down to pure politicking Romney is still the odds on favorite to get the nomination.

I heard an interesting comment by liberal (and past campaign organizer) Bob Beckel say on Monday on the Five (Fox Cable News’ successful replacement for the former Glenn Beck slot where Beckel is a co-host) that what should happen is that Romney should convince Bachmann to pull out of the race, pay off her campaign debt (much like they did with Pawlenty)  and have Bachmann endorse Romney so she can focus on her re-election to Congress campaign.  (It would be a terrible shame for Bachmann and conservatives to not only lose for president but then to also lose her seat in the House! With Ron Paul not running for his House seat alongside his presidential run, Conservatives could lose two strong conservative voices in the House (who won’t be President).

Romney already has the organization in place to see his candidacy through the primaries and into the general, plus his campaign is well placed to down-ticket campaign to the betterment of his Presidential run and Congressional GOP candidates.  He also is well-funded. The task at hand is that Mitt has to step up and elevate his game right now.  He must get better prepped for debates, forums and interviews, and he must stop playing it safe. All candidates have bad weeks over the course of any campaign but the Romney organization has to step it up and insure their candidate does not suffer another debate like this last one, where people have a question who… he or Gingrich, did a better job at debating… but rather know that the only difference is just a matter of style.

The Gingrich campaign organization is weak and disjointed, and is playing catch up right now.  They are also are not as well funded. The challenge is to establish a true national-level structure quickly and effectively, for without it Newt will ultimately come up short and lose any chance of getting the nomination, especially because of his old baggage.   There are plenty of excellent political operatives out there, some of which may need to be lured from current jobs with lower level candidates. The Gingrich organization has to go on a talent search blitz immediately now that funds are coming in more readily. There’s barely a month until the Iowa caucus with the New Hampshire primary is a week later. Newt must elevate his organizational game considerably by early January 2012.

Considering the reality and gravity of what is at stake in this election, it is time for both Speaker Gingrich and Governor Romney to step up their game.  And it is perhaps time for the other candidates, including Michele Bachmann to consider making their exists and especially if they lose in Iowa.  What is an absolute is that the GOP candidates and those focused on replacing Obama  must stop tearing each other apart and start focusing on the job at hand… beating Obama!

In several recent polls, although the numbers vary a little, there are some consistent votes no matter who is doing them:

Who will bring the most change:  Newt Gingrich

Who is most likeable between Mitt and Newt:  Mitt Romney

Best Debater : Newt Gingrich

Who is the most intelligent GOP candidate: Newt Gingrich

Who is most acceptable to moderates and independents (who end up deciding elections): Mitt Romney

** Who is most electable in the General Election: Mitt Romney  **

Another factor is that the Democrats could not be making it more obvious that they consider Mitt Romney the greater threat and that they would much rather run against Newt Gingrich, even though Newt would probably make mince meat of Obama in the debates. 

Both Mitt and Newt have done their share of flip-flopping but Newt Gingrich has a lot more baggage (affairs, 3-marriages and lots of turmoil as former Speaker of the House (which Pelosi has already threatened to expose… (of course that was yesterday) plus a more recent question involving money paid to Newt’s firm for his consulting on Fannie and Freddie)  for the Democrats to attack.  Mitt has led a pretty scandal free life and is much more the businessman verses the career politician.  (The Mormon issue still surfaces now and again (Romney and Huntsman) in discussions about evangelical votes, but many of them are just as wary of Catholics.

Former Clinton advisor and strategist Dick Morris, now turned conservative and Fox News contributor, says that really Mitt’s only flip-flop that needs more explaining other than “facts have changed and I’ve adjusted and re-thought my position based on those new facts” is Mitt’s change on abortion or a woman’s right to choose… because those facts don’t change.  But MItt has already said that he has always been pro-life personally and then when he was in office and it came to signing legislation that was pro-choice that he just couldn’t do it and changed his position as did Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.  Morris thought that explanation is sufficient and believes that RomneyCare was a state rights issue and ObamaCare is not and that Romney will over-turn ObamaCare.

Both men could win the nomination and both would be formidable candidates against Obama. So Gentlemen… “Start Your Engines and Step on the Gas Full Throttle!  No More Playing it Safe!!”

Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, Donald Trump, Sarah Palin and Chuck Baldwin have all been mentioned as possible 3rd Party Candidates. Beck even stated lately that he thinks  a 3rd Party Candidate Could Win in 2012… Beck is someone I agree with most of the time in most areas, but not on this one… and neither does anyone else that is credible, that I’ve heard.  A 3rd party run will split the Republican Party (like with Ross Perot in 1992) and guarantee an Obama re-election and pretty much bring the end  of America as we know it.  And not voting or writing in candidates will help do the same.

Obama and the Progressives will run a dirty campaign and you can bet that there will be a lot of fraud from their operatives, including the unions. Every single non-Obama vote and every patriot volunteer monitoring what is going is needed.

A Square Deal in a Round Hole

So, now Obama is channeling Teddy Roosevelt… Touting a ‘Republican’ for Progressive values. Key word here – ‘Progressive.’ Hello… Synonymous with ‘Marxist and hey, this oldie but goodie, ‘Communism.’ Obama just slid out of ‘Socialist’ speak, straight into ‘Communism.’ Well, how warm and fuzzy is that? Beck was right again.

I would just like to remind everyone out there that Teddy Roosevelt FOUNDED the Progressive Party. Let’s take a look at sections of Obama’s speech yesterday:

Today, we are still home to the world’s most productive workers and innovative companies. But for most Americans, the basic bargain that made this country great has eroded. Long before the recession hit, hard work stopped paying off for too many people. Fewer and fewer of the folks who contributed to the success of our economy actually benefitted from that success. Those at the very top grew wealthier from their incomes and investments than ever before. But everyone else struggled with costs that were growing and paychecks that weren’t – and too many families found themselves racking up more and more debt just to keep up.

For many years, credit cards and home equity loans papered over the harsh realities of this new economy. But in 2008, the house of cards collapsed. We all know the story by now: Mortgages sold to people who couldn’t afford them, or sometimes even understand them. Banks and investors allowed to keep packaging the risk and selling it off. Huge bets – and huge bonuses – made with other people’s money on the line. Regulators who were supposed to warn us about the dangers of all this, but looked the other way or didn’t have the authority to look at all.

It was wrong. It combined the breathtaking greed of a few with irresponsibility across the system. And it plunged our economy and the world into a crisis from which we are still fighting to recover. It claimed the jobs, homes, and the basic security of millions – innocent, hard-working Americans who had met their responsibilities, but were still left holding the bag.

More of the same old ‘redistribute the wealth’ mentality that has gotten us into the mess we are in today. And it mixes truth with lies. I know firsthand what it means to have to short sell your home and THEN have to pay the bank 20k on top of it. I am living it, but it is my responsibility, NOT the government’s and I don’t expect anyone else to pay my debts. I know firsthand what it is like for your spouse to lose his job and look for work for a year, but we did it. I know firsthand what it is to have 50k in debt and refuse to declare bankruptcy and be determined to pay back every single penny. I know firsthand what is to lose everything and start over. And as of yesterday, I know firsthand what it is like to lose your health and dental insurance because of Obamacare. So, let’s be clear President Obama. You weren’t left holding the bag, Americans were left holding the bag. You are getting rich on the side while we struggle. But the majority of Americans keep true to their responsibilities and debts, which is a hell of a lot better than what I can say for our so-called leaders. Communists don’t shoulder the blame, they assign it.

Ever since, there has been a raging debate over the best way to restore growth and prosperity; balance and fairness. Throughout the country, it has sparked protests and political movements – from the Tea Party to the people who have been occupying the streets of New York and other cities. It’s left Washington in a near-constant state of gridlock. And it’s been the topic of heated and sometimes colorful discussion among the men and women who are running for president.

But this isn’t just another political debate. This is the defining issue of our time. This is a make or break moment for the middle class, and all those who are fighting to get into the middle class. At stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, and secure their retirement.

Now, in the midst of this debate, there are some who seem to be suffering from a kind of collective amnesia. After all that’s happened, after the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, they want to return to the same practices that got us into this mess. In fact, they want to go back to the same policies that have stacked the deck against middle-class Americans for too many years. Their philosophy is simple: we are better off when everyone is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules.

Oh, there’s a raging debate going on all right… But you are lying through your pearly whites over it. While the Tea Party is a genuine movement of the people of this great nation and the epitome of rugged individualism, Occupy Wall Street is an engineered Marxist ploy to create chaos in the streets so you can have your way with the Constitution and create an emergency that will solidify your iron grip on power over us. Before you were elected, America had the largest and freest middle class in the world. You sir, are actively destroying it for personal gain.

You got us into this depression. You are the one leading the charge to curtail our freedoms. Let’s get something straight here. Let me be blunt. I’m guilty of this too and did not even know it until I found out about our insurance yesterday. Not so long ago, people in America did not just take for granted you would get insurance through work. We didn’t expect our employers to cover us. If we had to get insurance or see a doctor or dentist, we figured it out. It’s another freebie we now expect and it is wrong.

Free benefits and easy credit are like heroin. Our Progressive leaders are more than happy to get us hooked on it. No one owes us insurance or a house or a job or an education. We are free to earn that for ourselves. But to accept just one hit of heroin is to become a slave to the dealer – the Progressives. That is why our parents and grandparents would never take a handout. Get it now? I don’t blame my husband’s employer. I’ll bet he went home last night after telling everyone and felt like hell. I think it costs him about 25k a month to cover everyone and under the new regs, it’s more likely to be 50k. Who the hell can afford that? I feel for the guy – this is not his responsibility. Get over it. It’s ours. If he hadn’t done that yesterday, many people would be out of a job today and that business might have closed it’s doors for good. If there is any blame here, blame the Progressives on both sides of the aisle, starting with Obama.

Next:

Well, I’m here to say they are wrong. I’m here to reaffirm my deep conviction that we are greater together than we are on our own. I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, and when everyone plays by the same rules. Those aren’t Democratic or Republican values; 1% values or 99% values. They’re American values, and we have to reclaim them.

You see, this isn’t the first time America has faced this choice. At the turn of the last century, when a nation of farmers was transitioning to become the world’s industrial giant, we had to decide: would we settle for a country where most of the new railroads and factories were controlled by a few giant monopolies that kept prices high and wages low? Would we allow our citizens and even our children to work ungodly hours in conditions that were unsafe and unsanitary? Would we restrict education to the privileged few? Because some people thought massive inequality and exploitation was just the price of progress.

Theodore Roosevelt disagreed. He was the Republican son of a wealthy family. He praised what the titans of industry had done to create jobs and grow the economy. He believed then what we know is true today: that the free market is the greatest force for economic progress in human history. It’s led to a prosperity and standard of living unmatched by the rest of the world.

But Roosevelt also knew that the free market has never been a free license to take whatever you want from whoever you can. It only works when there are rules of the road to ensure that competition is fair, open, and honest. And so he busted up monopolies, forcing those companies to compete for customers with better services and better prices. And today, they still must. He fought to make sure businesses couldn’t profit by exploiting children, or selling food or medicine that wasn’t safe. And today, they still can’t.

Let’s talk about Roosevelt, shall we? He started the Progressive movement. He was a Progressive on the right. Progressive equals Communist. Do the math. Roosevelt preached collectivism and was an anti-capitalist. I don’t give a damn which side of the aisle he was on. You might as well go with the Russian Constitution, because the American one is the absolute opposite of what Obama is preaching in the name of Roosevelt. And don’t forget, Roosevelt led to Woodrow Wilson getting elected. If we get another four years of Obama’s Marxist ways, we are kaput as a nation. Done. How I long for Calvin Coolidge.

Fairness for all, equals fairness for none. Can’t people see that? You can’t regulate fairness. A free and open society where you are free to succeed or fail is the only way to prosper. Our founding fathers knew that. Our treasonous leaders know it too. Obama and his toadies have taken the freest and most prosperous nation in the world and have regulated them to death and crushed our Constitution.

Next:

In 1910, Teddy Roosevelt came here, to Osawatomie, and laid out his vision for what he called a New Nationalism. “Our country,” he said, “…means nothing unless it means the triumph of a real democracy…of an economic system under which each man shall be guaranteed the opportunity to show the best that there is in him.”

For this, Roosevelt was called a radical, a socialist, even a communist. But today, we are a richer nation and a stronger democracy because of what he fought for in his last campaign: an eight hour work day and a minimum wage for women; insurance for the unemployed, the elderly, and those with disabilities; political reform and a progressive income tax.

Obama’s ‘new nationalism’ will more closely resemble 1930′s Germany and not America. To ‘guarantee’ success, is to ‘guarantee’ mediocrity and slavery. That is the only success that comes of such mandates. Competition and striving to be better is the only thing that produces true success. It is not a trophy for all.

I can’t take it any more. Lie after lie after lie. You can read the rest of the speech here. I suggest you have receptacle handy to vomit in. I choose freedom over nationalism. I choose to be a capitalist over a communist.

The rest of the speech goes on blaming America in general for losing jobs overseas. Actually, Obama’s policies have driven most of those jobs and employers out of the country. Good jobs and a strong economy are created by less taxation, smaller government and, horrors, capitalism. Class warfare, collectivism, wealth redistribution and Marxism are a short road to hell. Set America free Obama! Stop trying to take your ‘square deal‘ and shove it in a round hole.
