The Butler from Another Planet….

The Butler

By Michael Reagan | Aug 22, 2013 | Townhall.com

There you go again, Hollywood.

You’ve taken a great story about a real person and real events and twisted it into a bunch of lies.

You took the true story of Eugene Allen, the White House butler who served eight presidents from 1952 to 1986, and turned it into a clichéd “message movie.”

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler’” stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a fictional character supposedly based on Eugene Allen’s real life.

But let’s compare the two White House butlers.

Guess which one grew up in segregated Virginia, got a job at the White House and rose to become maître d’hôtel, the highest position in White House service?

Guess which one had a happy, quiet life and was married to the same woman for 65 years? And who had one son who served honorably in Vietnam and never made a peep of protest through the pre- and post-civil rights era?

Now guess which butler grew up on a Georgia farm, watched the boss rape his mother and then, when his father protested the rape, watched the boss put a bullet through his father’s head?

Guess which butler feels the pain of America’s racial injustices so deeply that he quits his White House job and joins his son in a protest movement?

And guess which butler has a wife (Oprah Winfrey) who becomes an alcoholic and has a cheap affair with the guy next door? (I’m surprised it wasn’t the vice president.)

After comparing Hollywood’s absurd version of Eugene Allen’s life story with the truth, you wonder why the producers didn’t just call it “The Butler from Another Planet.”

Screenwriter Danny Strong says he was trying to present a “backstage kind of view of the White House” that portrayed presidents and first ladies as they really were in everyday life.

Well, I was backstage at the White House -- a few hundred times. I met and knew the real butler, Mr. Allen, and I knew a little about my father.

Portraying Ronald Reagan as a racist because he was in favor of lifting economic sanctions against South Africa is simplistic and dishonest.

If you knew my father, you’d know he was the last person on Earth you would call a racist.

If Strong had gotten his “facts” from the Reagan biographies, he’d have learned that when my father was playing football at Eureka College one of his best friends was a black teammate.

Strong also would have learned that my father invited black players home for dinner and once, when two players were not allowed to stay in the local hotel, he invited them to stay overnight at his house.

Screenwriter Strong also might have found out that when my father was governor of California he appointed more blacks to positions of power than any of predecessors -- combined.

It’s appalling to me that someone is trying to imply my father was a racist. He and Nancy and the rest of the Reagan family treated Mr. Allen with the utmost respect.

It was Nancy Reagan who invited the butler to dinner – not to work but as guest. And it was my father who promoted Mr. Allen to maître d’hôtel.

The real story of the White House butler doesn’t imply racism at all. It’s simply Hollywood liberals wanting to believe something about my father that was never there.

My father’s position on lifting the South African sanctions in the ‘80s had nothing to do with the narrow issue of race. It had to do with the geopolitics of the Cold War.

But facts don’t matter to Hollywood’s creative propagandists. Truth is too complicated and not dramatic enough for scriptwriters, who think in minute terms, not the big picture, when it comes to a conservative.

Despite what Hollywood’s liberal hacks believe, my father didn’t see people in colors. He saw them as individual Americans. If the liberals in Hollywood -- and Washington -- ever start looking at people the way he did, the country will be a lot better off.

The Butler (Kindle) is (would be) a terrific story that deserves to be told. Too bad it wasn’t told by honest people without political agendas who felt it necessary to use a traitor to portray one of our most beloved first ladies (insulting Vietnam Vets of all colors) and to distort much of history. Perhaps reading Wes Haygood’s book The Butler: A Witness to History would be a better option!?!  Or at least wait until the movie comes to (free) TV, if you watch it knowing the slant and bias the movie is based on.

Democrats’ History of Racism

clip_image001

by B. Christopher Agee   -   Western Journalism

Here's a bit of American history guaranteed not to appear in any government-approved history book. The Democrat party has, throughout its existence, represented the bigotry and racism they seek to project onto Republicans.

The informed readers of this article are likely familiar with the racist roots of the political party aptly portrayed by a jackass, but much of the general population, especially outspoken Democrats, are woefully ignorant of any such facts.

Ask the nearest Democrat about Republicans and race and even the mayor of a substantial American city might just respond with, "They are racist."

In reference to their own party, Dems will likely say they led the fight for civil rights throughout the years, though a cursory review of the party will prove this assertion wrong. For instance, this was the party that established the Ku Klux Klan as its enforcement arm. Powerful Democrat politicians have appointed klansmen to high-ranking positions in American government for a century, yet have somehow convinced the vast majority of blacks that Republicans are the bad guys!

The KKK was used to intimidate voters, black and white, into voting Democrat - or not voting at all.

Through violence, property damage, rape, and murder, Democrats were able to secure a huge majority of the black vote comprised of those afraid to cast an alternate ballot. Disgustingly, they have somehow been able to maintain that death-grip on the African-American community to this day.

When these reprehensible strategies, though unquestionably effective, did not satiate their need to keep the black population down, Democrat-supported legislation such as Jim Crow laws made sure these minorities would remain second-class citizens even after the ratification of the 13th Amendment. There are plenty of examples of heralded Democrats, including Presidents LBJ and Truman, expressing disdain for blacks in their own words.

Republicans, thankfully, emerged as the pro-freedom, anti-slavery alternative to the juggernaut that was the Democrat party. Despite the fact that significantly more Republicans supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act than did Democrats (and the fact that Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first to initiate the legislation which finally passed and was enacted under Democrat Presidents JFK and LBJ), the party of the left has somehow hoodwinked much of the black community into thinking they are its savior. In fact until the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Martin Luther King was a Republican, re-registering as a Democrat as part of the negotiations, and so were most blacks Republicans (the party of Abraham Lincoln) until that time. Facts like these are part of the reason the Progressives consistently fight to re-write and edit the history that is taught and skew media productions.

Of course, today's Democrats will say, if they concede these points at all, that this is all ancient history, but I respectfully disagree. In much the same way that it did in the late 1800s, the Democrat party needs the black vote and, increasingly, the Hispanic vote to pull heavily for their side in order to win elections.

While paying them mere lip service, liberals pass legislation such as a broken welfare system rewarding poor mothers for having out-of-wedlock children and punishing them for getting married, thus keeping minorities at the mercy of government handouts. This makes them beholden to a party that represents views, such as support for abortion and gay marriage, that are diametrically opposed to those of many in the black community.

Democrats know they cannot intellectually compete with a party that, at its core, simply wants to provide individual liberty, encourage strong families and reduce abortions (which equal approximately the death toll of the 9/11 attack every two days in the black community alone), so they continue to repeat the old diatribe that Republicans are the real racists.

The GOP, which was the first to name a black Supreme Court Justice and Secretary of State, must defend itself against accusations based purely in the imagination of Democrats, often with figurative or literal blood on their own hands.

Each February, Democrats promote Black History Month with a vengeance, hoping to stoke the race war embers and elicit even more loyalty from the black community. I would promote a the study of accurate black history, not just during the shortest month but year round, and it's relationship with a Democrat party that has been patronizing at its best and deadly at its worst.

Unfortunately, I feel that would be the only chance Republicans have of attracting a voting bloc that has continually been misled into hating the wrong political party.

The Haymarket Massacre–Chicago, Illinois

By: Dave Logan  -  ThirdWaveDave

Terresa Monroe Hamilton at NoisyRoom Blog gives you a taste of this year’s May Day. Below is history of the same type of event back in the old days of this movement, Chicago, Illinois. I added pics at the bottom with an assist from Marathon Pundit, Greater ChicagoLand Area.

You must read and understand history. Below is your lesson for this election cycle:

COMMIE DAY Print E-mail  -  Written by Dr. Jack Wheeler  -  Thursday, 03 May 2012

One hundred and twenty six years ago today, on the evening of May 3, 1886, a group of men met in the basement of Greif’s Hall on Lake Street in Chicago. Almost all of them were recent immigrants from Germany, and what brought them together was a hatred they had in common.

They called this hatred by various names – they were “anarchists,” “socialists,” “communists,” “syndicalists,” “revolutionaries” – all code-words for anti-capitalist. They all hated capitalism with a fanatically violent fervor. They all claimed to be champions of “workers,” of employees, people who had jobs – and above all human beings on earth they hated those who provided those jobs, the entrepreneurs who created the companies that made those jobs possible.

One of them was Louis Lingg from Mannheim, who had come to America less than a year before. He had taught himself how to make hand-held bombs containing dynamite (invented by Alfred Nobel in 1867), and at the meeting in Greif’s Hall, he gave one of his bombs to Rudolph Schnaubelt, the brother-in-law of one of the meeting’s organizers, Michael Schwab.

The following evening, May 4, a demonstration was held in support of “workingmen’s rights,” organized by an anarchist-socialist German-language newspaper in Chicago, Arbeiter-Zeitung, and its editor, August Spies from Hesse, Germany. It was at Haymarket Square, at West Randolph and Desplains Streets. It was chilly and drizzly, with some 600 in attendance.

At about 10:30pm, with a speaker calling out “To arms!” and advocating violence, Police Inspector John Bonfield, at the head of a contingent of 60 uniformed policemen, called for the meeting to be over and the crowd to disperse. Rudolph Schnaubelt lit Lingg’s bomb and tossed it into the police. Officer Matthias Degan was killed on the spot, six officers died thereafter, and dozens wounded.

A number of demonstrators then pulled out revolvers and began firing at the police, who returned fire, killing four.

History knows this as The Haymarket Massacre. There were eight arrests, including Spies, Schwab, Lingg, and Schnaubelt. Bombs and bomb materials were found in Lingg’s apartment. Schnaubelt escaped (fleeing to South America, he died in Buenos Aires in 1901). Five of the defendants were sentenced to be hung – but only four were, as Lingg committed suicide by smuggling a blasting cap into his cell, which he lit and put in his mouth. It blew off his lower jaw, and it took hours for him to die in agony.

Lingg, along with the four who were hung, lies buried in Chicago’s Waldheim Cemetery. And now comes the part of this story that may make you ill.

There is a Monument to the Haymarket Martyrs in the Waldheim Cemetery – and it is not in honor of the policemen murdered by the anarcho-communists. It is a monument to the murderers. Not only that, it is a Shrine of the Left’s, a pilgrimage site. The Haymarket Murderers have been turned into heroes. Just like a Palestinian terrorist suicide bomber who murders Israeli children is hailed as a shahid, a martyr (link to pic):

http://www.tothepointnews.com/images/stories/2012/haymarket1.png

And it gets worse. It is officially designated (by Clinton in 1997) as a National Historical Landmark, stating: “This monument represents the labor movement’s struggle for workers’ rights.” (link to pic):

http://www.tothepointnews.com/images/stories/2012/haymarket2.png

It is a monument to Communist anarchic murder. Which is why the Communist Party of Illinois calls its website The Spirit of Haymarket. And why May Day – May 1st – is Communism’s “day of international resistance and solidarity against capitalism,” designated as such by the Former Soviet Union, and celebrated by lefties in scores of countries the world over.

May Day was for millennia, especially in Europe, a happy, joyful celebration of life after winter, with dancing around a Maypole and crowning a pretty girl with flowers as Queen of May. Only Communists could take an innocent celebration of springtime and turn it into a day of hate, envy, and beggary.

Only Communists could hijack May Day (May 4th, Haymarket Martyrs Day – close enough to May 1st to hijack), and celebrate terrorist murder instead of life. But that’s what happened, and what happened on May Day this week, with “Occupy” Commies trashing San Francisco, and dozens of other US cities.

May Day is Commie Day. And here is the bottom line, folks. I want you to really pay attention here, to let this sink in to the deepest recesses of your limbic system:

If Zero is reelected in November, every day in America from then on will be Commie Day.

America as we know it will be da svidanya, over, finished, adios, done and dusted. America will be gone. The loss will be irretrievable. Irretrievable.

There is an on-going debate and discussion on this in the Forum. On one side are those who would rather have Zero be elected than Romney.

Their argument is that hell is coming to breakfast in the coming years, for which a RINO like Romney will get blamed, and who does not have what it takes to do more than apply band-aids (such as competing currencies, defaulting on federal debt, wholesale elimination of federal agencies, etc.). Thus in 2016, the horrific economic damage is all Romney’s fault, and Zero or some equally evil Dem will be back in the White House saddle. (Remember that a one-term Zero can always run again.)

So, if we let Zero continue to ruin America, we’ll have a better chance to rescue it four years from now. We’ll have to destroy the village to save it.
Sorry, no sale.

On the other side of this argument is Lynda Mae. I’ll let her own words speak for her:

“Think on these things, TTPers. What Romney would do as President is mere speculation — educated speculation, to be sure, based on his past actions and words. However, we don’t know exactly what he will do, whether he will cut back on governmental departments and government spending or whether he will be afraid to disturb the status quo.

“We don’t know whether Conservatism will have a huge influence on his Administration. It’s the great unknown of any new candidate for the Presidency — what will actually happen once they sit in the Oval Office.

“BUT we DO know what Obama has in store for us. He hates the U.S. He wants to see capitalism and the free enterprise system torn down and replaced with his dictatorial socialism. He wants to see YOU and your businesses not only marginalized but destroyed.

“If anyone thinks that a mess-up of a second term for Obama would mean that a Conservative Republican would be elected in 2016 must think that Obama will not completely and radically change the nation in the next four years, thus making such a change back to sanity possible.

“They must think that after destroying the Constitution, packing the court with Marxists, doing away with our freedom of religion and speech and rights to assemble, giving over U.S. sovereignty to the U.N., depleting our military effectiveness and readiness, rounding up his enemies and giving Holder even more power to race-bait, plus borrowing/spending/stimulating, that Conservatism would still be allowed as a political movement.

“They must think that there would be anyone left to form a government after the national burn-down and war which would ensue when patriots tried to overthrow the dictatorship.

“Hyperbole? Perhaps. Maybe a little too harsh in my opinion? Maybe. But do not think that re-electing Obama will give the nation anything less than a death blow from which recovering would take more years than any TTPer would have left on this earth, no matter his present age.”

I’m with Mae.

Is Skye? Frankly, you want to walk on eggshells when differing with someone whose IQ far exceeds 200. Here’s his advice on the Forum:

“The central government will claim ever increasing powers because words are cheap and the cheapest form of oppression is to make one’s victims believe that the Great Oz is omniscient and omnipotent.

“In reality, there will be ever increasing demands on the central government for resources from many politically powerful players, including recipients of literally hundreds of different types of goodies, entitlements, bailouts, and payoffs – the big brother oppressors have to compete for funding with these other powerful groups. Roman Emperors such as Diocletian found out to their dismay that they couldn’t allocate anywhere near all the available public monies to their goon squads.

“At the same time, the central government’s task of obtaining those resources will inevitably become more and more difficult. The Fed bought 61% of all Treasury Bonds issued last year. As the debt and deficit cans are kicked nearer and nearer to the economic cliff, the cost of either borrowing or printing ‘money’ to feed all those insatiably hungry mouths will increase rapidly.

“The interest on the publicly held National Debt is currently about $220 billion per year – about 10% of all tax receipts. At normal interest rates, it would be about $700-800 billion per year – about 1/3 of all tax receipts. At the interest rates of the late 1970s and early 1980s, it would be about $1,400-1,600 billion per year – about 2/3 of all tax receipts. Does any lender really believe that the US could politically afford to devote over half its income to debt service?

“These realities will, over the next decade, more and more severely limit the resources that the central government spends. If the central government tries to sustain even the current level of spending by printing however much money it takes, it will be game over – for the central government!

“Of course, the central government will do its very best to become more and more oppressive and abusive as it progressively loses its ability to tax, borrow, print, and spend. Those oppressions and abuses will not be equal everywhere, and they will not affect everyone equally.

“The central government will prioritize where it puts its goons and what they do in those areas because – even now – they don’t have enough goons to enforce every law and regulation everywhere all the time. As the central government destroys itself and its resource limitations become more and more imminent and severe, the consequences to decent productive people simply can not be the same everywhere.

“Don’t freak out and give up if ObamaCare BO is re-elected. And don’t buy more than a $10 bottle of cheap champagne if MassCare Romney is elected. Save that money for getting out of Dodge in time. There are always great investment opportunities during chaotic times – if panic or hopelessness doesn’t blind you to them.”

Skye is certainly right that the federalies are neither omniscient nor omnipotent. But it is not their purpose to be. They have no intention whatever of enforcing all their rules on everyone. The purpose of all these tens of thousands of rules and regs is to have one with which to screw you if they so desire, no matter what you do.

So, your choice, if you want to live in Zero’s America, is to hide, obey, not cause the slightest trouble nor draw the slightest negative attention to yourself, nor complain in any way about Zero – or risk being made an example of, with criminal prosecution for not filling out some required form or following some fascist regulation.

I’m not willing to live like that. I am not willing to ride out the Fascist Storm. I am not going to live in a country where every day is Commie Day. The reelection of Zero will be the death of America, and I am too old to wait around for a resurrection that most likely will never come.

We don’t live in Plato’s World of Forms. Marxist lefties and Rothbardian libertarians may dream of a world of perfect freedom however they define it, but such worlds don’t exist. We, all of us, are confined to the real world, as messy and imperfect as it is, for that’s the only one that exists. The choice the real world has now given us is Romney or Zero, for we will end up with one or the other.

With Romney, America has a chance. With Zero, America doesn’t. I’ll take the chance. I want America to survive. And I want this Commie Day last May 1st to be her last.

FTC…

Ps:
TTPers – this is just my two cents in this discussion. Please let the Forum discussion continue – and if you differ with me, do not let that inhibit you in the slightest way! Not that you would anyway….

Police Memorial in Haymarket Square–(Hat Tip: John Ruberry)

clip_image001

The Haymarket sculpture wasn’t the first monument to stand in the Randolph Street area. In 1889 the city erected a statue in memory of the policemen killed in the violence of that May night.

Unlike the 2004 memorial, there was no mention of the spectators who lost their lives. The statue became a popular location for protests, especially for any group that had problems with the police department or the power structure they represented. In the 1920s a public transit driver rammed the statue with his cable car and the sculpture was moved to a nearby park. By 1956, when the city no longer had any cable cars, the monument was brought back to Randolph Street, which is where I remember seeing it. In the 1970s, the Weather Underground took credit for blowing up the monument – twice. It was moved to the Chicago Police Academy in 1976, and in 2007, relocated to the new headquarters of the Chicago Police Department, where I doubt it will ever be blown up again.

A Bridge Too Far: CAIR Versus Bare Naked Islam

Thursday, December 29, 2011

I note with interest a PR wire sent out by the The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) boasting that they had taken down an 'anti-Islam hate site'. The site in question is Bare Naked Islam. ( h/t memeorandum)

CAIR's PR wire is entitled "CAIR Asks FBI to Probe Internet Threats to Mosques" and they cite their successful attempt to have Wordpress shut the site down.

Predictably, a collective shriek went through the blogosphere, starting with Jim Hoft over at Gateway Pundit and there were a multitude of calls to 'boycott sharia compliant Wordpress.'

I doubt this will make me any friends, but I don't support that action at all, and I think it's worth the time to explain why.

I don't need to tell my regular readers what I think of CAIR. The information that came out in the Holy Land Federation trial on CAIR and other Muslim Brotherhood fronts should have been enough to shut them down permanently and provide jail sentences for a number of their members, and that's exactly what would have happened if the Obama Department of Justice hadn't filed Disinclination to Prosecute briefs in what were likely open and shut cases, letting the Islamists walk free.

But in this case, I took an actual look at the content CAIR was protesting before joining the hue and cry.

It's a screen shot of what appears to be an actual page from Bare Naked Islam's site, and if that was what was actually running there, CAIR was entirely within their rights to voice their concern and bring to to WordPress's attention.

The page in question celebrates a graffiti attack on a French mosque with the text "Whoo Hoo! Will the Muslims ever get a clue they aren't welcome in France?"

The comments are even worse, with many of them calling for the burning of mosques 'with the asslifters inside of them.' Others call for violent attacks on Muslims. You can find the page and the comments at the above link.

If that was truly what BNI was allowing on their site, ( and I wouldn't put it past CAIR to manufacture something like this) the site owner definitely crossed the line. The Supreme Court has made it quite clear on a number of occasions that free speech ends when it comes to bodily harm and mayhem. That's exactly how neo-Nazi Tom Metzger's conviction was upheld - because of messages on his answering machine urging violence on various ethnic groups he didn't care for. When you provide a forum for this kind of violent hatred, you are past protected speech and yelling fire in a crowded theater.

I would also add that as far as I'm concerned, the site owner had a responsibility to monitor the comments. The fact that the owner didn't gives credence to the appearance that the owner not only didn't disagree, but supported and approved using the site as a forum for those kind of sentiments.

There is plenty to be said about Islamist infiltration in America, about jihad, about creeping sharia, about the threat of Islamists and Salafists to our civilization, and I've said it here more than once. But to call for the butchering of innocent people praying in a mosque is simply evil. In fact, it's exactly how jihadis treat churches in places like Nigeria, Pakistan and Indonesia.

And speaking just for myself,I consider that not only irresponsible but morally reprehensible.

It's also stupid, because it plays right into the Islamist's hands.
It's not well known, but the majority of domestic jihad terrorist attacks here in America have been thwarted because an American Muslim saw or heard something in a mosque, overheard a conversation, saw something that didn't look or feel right and reported it to the authorities, often at risk to themselves.

They did it out of simple decency, which is the frame where the majority of people operate ordinarily. But they also did it because they realized that every jihad attack here in America reflected on them as Muslims and threatened their continued existence as free citizens in a free country.

It's exactly the same for the sort of material I saw on that Bare Naked Islam page. It allows Islamists like CAIR to use it to shut down legitimate criticism of Islamism and jihad, it gives credence to the constant whining about Islamophobia and most importantly, it allows them to go to Muslims who may not support CAIR's agenda and raise money and support from them, saying: 'You see why you need us? You see now how we were right all along?'

A friend asks 'do you really think it's worth losing their site over?'

That's not my decision to make. But if what CAIR linked to was what was actually appearing on Bare Naked Islam and not manufactured, then as far as I'm concerned, Wordpress was well within their rights to decide that they didn't want to be associated with that kind of material, and to invite the owners of Bare Naked Islam to take their content elsewhere.

It's a decision I would have made myself, CAIR or no CAIR. There's real danger in getting so blinded by hatred that you become what you despise without realizing it.

The devil of our lesser nature inside all of us laughs out loud at that kind of self-mockery.

There is a very thin like between Freedom of Speech and in some cases harmful hate speech or even hate crimes, but censorship of any kind opens the door to all types of censorship.  (We are now re-writing history and books like  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn rather than reading it as is, allowing it to spark conversation and learning from our mistakes in the past.  This pattern or re-writing books and history is one of the major arguments to buying printed vs electronic books and keeping and preserving them!)  One man’s opinion is another man’s hate crime; the camel’s nose under the tent scenario.  And are allowing Big Brother and groups of all kinds to trample our Constitution.  Standing firm on freedom and the Constitution isn’t always easy or without controversy.  Does anyone remember the The People Vs. Pearl Harbor Day’s Watcher’s Council

Pearl Harbor veteran recalls bewilderment of attack

HONOLULUSeventy years ago this week, Navy veteran Lou Gore was startled by the muffled thuds of explosions and a burst of commotion while cleaning up from breakfast below deck on the USS Phoenix, a cruiser docked at Pearl Harbor.

Hurrying topside, the 18-year-old seaman second-class was confronted by pandemonium he was unable to immediately comprehend -- flames shooting skyward, roiling clouds of dark, acrid smoke, swarms of fighter-bombers buzzing low overhead.

Within moments that Sunday morning, it became clear that the U.S. Pacific fleet was under attack. As reflexes from training took over, Gore and others aboard the Phoenix jumped into action and began firing back with anti-aircraft guns.

"We didn't know (at first) those were Japanese planes," Gore, now 88 and visiting the islands with nine members of his family, recalled in a recent interview. "We didn't know what was happening. I just did my job."

Gore is one of 100 aging Pearl Harbor Survivors who will attend ceremonies on Wednesday on Oahu marking the 70th anniversary of the Japanese air and naval assault that claimed 2,390 American lives and drew the United States into World War Two.

Nearly half of those who perished were sailors aboard the battleship USS Arizona, which Japanese torpedo bombers sank early in the attack, sending 1,177 of its 1,400-member crew to their deaths.

The USS Arizona Memorial, built over the remains of the ship, now forms a centerpiece of the World War Two Valor in the Pacific National Monument, an historic site administered by the National Park Service.

'BODIES EVERYWHERE'

Gore's vessel, the Phoenix, was anchored a short distance from the stretch of harbor known as Battleship Row, where the Arizona was moored when it was hit.

"I'll never forget watching the ... USS Arizona battleship jumping up out of the water, landing and rolling on its side," Gore said. "There were bodies everywhere. Brooms floating in the water, canisters."

Long after the two-hour surprise attack had ended, the base remained on edge, he recounted. "Everyone was keyed up. After the attack, at night, it wasn't safe to be out. People were shooting at shadows."

The Phoenix, among a handful of light cruisers and other vessels that got out of the harbor during or just after the attack, emerged unscathed.

Besides the nearly 2,400 who were killed, the attack left 1,178 people wounded, sank or heavily damaged a dozen U.S. warships and destroyed 323 aircraft, badly crippling the Pacific fleet.

As has been the practice of past anniversary ceremonies, visiting veterans, relatives and dignitaries will bow their heads for a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. on Wednesday, the time when the attack began, as military jets soar overhead in a "missing-man" formation.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon will render a salute to the fallen crew of the Arizona, and the morning service will end with a "walk of honor" by more than 100 Pearl Harbor Survivors and other World War Two veterans, many of them in their late 80s. The gathering is expected to include seven of the last known 18 survivors from Arizona's crew.

The turnout by Pearl Harbor veterans on Wednesday is expected to be only about half of what it was last year, when about 200 attended.

Mal Middlesworth, former president of the National Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and current publisher of the Pearl Gram, a quarterly newsletter, estimates there are about 2,700 Pearl Harbor veterans still alive.

For Gore, a resident of Seattle, this week marks his first visit to Hawaii since the 1960s, and his first opportunity to personally show his two sons, his daughter and a granddaughter where he was on the morning of the attack.

Gore went on to serve in Okinawa and New Guinea during World War Two and remained in the Navy for 30 years, including a brief stint in Korea and two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He retired as a petty officer first-class.

Despite the tributes he is receiving this year as a Pearl Harbor veteran, Gore insists he is no hero.

"I'm grateful to still be alive. So many lost their lives for no reason. ... I wish I had been able to save more" (lives), he said.

(This story corrects Gore's rank in paragraph 2 to seaman second-class.)

How much news did you see on this today?  How many of our kids learn about this school?  How many of us even remembered it was the 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day??

Book Burning – It’s All The Rage

By: Terresa Monroe-Hamilton  -  the NoisyRoom

clip_image001

The Great Hall of the ancient Library of Alexandria in Egypt. A reconstruction based on scholarly evidence. Taken from COSMOS by Carl Sagan.

As echoes of: ‘This is what Democracy looks like! reverberate across the Middle East, Egypt has fallen to the Muslim Brotherhood as a direct result of the Arab Spring. Now, the Royal Library of Alexandria in Egypt, one of the greatest libraries of the ancient world, is the target of The Muslim Brotherhood who want to burn it to the ground and build a mosque on its literary ashes.

The library was burned once before accidentally by Caesar. It has been damaged and restored numerous times since then. The library dates from the time of Alexander the Great:

The Royal Library of Alexandria, or Ancient Library of Alexandria, in Alexandria, Egypt, was the largest and most significant great library of the ancient world. It flourished under the patronage of the Ptolemaic dynasty and functioned as a major center of scholarship from its construction in the 3rd century BC until the Roman conquest of Egypt in 30 BC. The library was conceived and opened either during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter (323–283 BC) or during the reign of his son Ptolemy II (283–246 BC).

Plutarch (AD 46–120) wrote that during his visit to Alexandria in 48 BC, Julius Caesar “accidentally” burned the library down when he set fire to his own ships to frustrate Achillas’ attempt to limit his ability to communicate by sea. After its destruction, scholars used a “daughter library” in a temple known as the Serapeum, located in another part of the city.

Intended both as a commemoration and an emulation of the original, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was inaugurated in 2002 near the site of the old library.

In 2004, a Polish-Egyptian excavation team announced that they had discovered the remains of the Library of Alexandria.

Radical Islamists call the library a den of depravity because of its arts programs in music and dance. They want to destroy this historic monument to knowledge and intellect and rejoice while it burns baby, burns to the ground. The current dictators in Egypt are either supportive of, or willfully negligent of, The Brotherhood who could well shift into becoming the controlling power through parliament there in Egypt in the next election.

And this is just the beginning of a new dark age that could spread across the planet and will certainly consume Egypt and other Islamic nations if it is not stopped and soon. The rise of the Caliphate is now a very real possibility and before some liberal envisions Arabian Nights or some other such nonsense, remember, this is a militant coalition of Islamists. They are warriors and conquerors and in their wake of conquest and rule, they will leave blood and death as their calling card. Liberals, you are at the top of the ‘death’ list for these guys.

The government in Egypt has already curtailed free speech at the library. The destruction of the library will most assuredly mark the beginning (if not the ongoing escalation) of Egypt’s fall into the hands of the Islamists. The elections will take place on Nov. 28th and the prognosis currently is not good for avoiding a capitulation to The Muslim Brotherhood.

It is reported by the Arabic media that Alexandria is already under the full control of the Islamists. Alexandria is home to over four million people and is the second largest city in Egypt. The city has already radically changed. Women now don’t just wear the hijab (headscarf), they now wear the niqab (the full head covering that covers a woman’s face). Men are replete with full beards as Islamic tradition calls for.

From Hudson New York:

According to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, “The Brotherhood have spent the last few months mobilizing their half-million plus members for intense electoral campaigns up and down the Nile river, which the group hopes will deliver it 40% of the seats in Parliament.”

The paper pointed out that the Islamists have been “wooing voters not only with their trademark slogan of “Islam is the solution,” but also with the tangibles of meat and vegetables that they sell to poor Egyptians at half the market prices.”

The paper also found that in the months since the fall of Mubarak, “Brotherhood-friendly preachers have made their way back into some strategic mosques, using the podiums to recruit new converts and give confidence to hard-core supporters.”

And what is being preached in those mosques? Well, hate for the Great Satan (the US) and the Little Satan (Israel), of course… Their hate knows no end except slaughter and death. They feel they have to defend Islam against Jews, Christian crusaders and Western colonialism. And by defend, they mean wipe their enemies off the face of the planet just in case I wasn’t clear on that point. We are their number one enemy, with Israel a close second. They would welcome a full blown version of Armageddon with open arms… after all Americans love Pepsi, but they love death as Islamists have been known to quip.

The liberals are promoting the Arab Spring here in America. How long until they burn our libraries, I wonder? After all, Michelle Obama said we would have to rewrite our history and this is one of the ways it is done.

MICHELLE OBAMA: “Barack knows that we are going to have to make sacrifices; we are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation.”

Dictators, mass murderers, radical Islamists – monsters from our past, recent and ancient, love to extend their power and control by burning books and libraries. They are symbols of freedom and intellect and aren’t tolerated by those who would be masters over others. They are seen as a danger. It is also a way to rewrite history in the image of the conqueror. Book burning… It’s all the rage in the Middle East and they’ve done it many times before.

Principal Banning All Fall Holidays at School… Columbus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving… and Christmas Has Already Been

Here we go again… It just gets worse every year. Stand-up America!! What holds a society together is its common values, traditions and history; something the secular progressives have been working on for years to refashion or steal  from us.

“The Celebration of Christmas in America is not Just a Christian Holiday,  but a Celebration of our National Past and Our Collective Wishes and Psyche as a Nation!” (See:  God Rest Ye Merry Merchants) And so it is with Thanksgiving, Columbus  Day and Halloween, the are part of collective memory, our past… even with the flaws.  The truth has no agenda and the negatives make us stronger.

Posted: 10/17/2011

You won't see little ghouls and goblins running around one Massachusetts elementary school this Halloween.

The Boston Herald reports that the principal has banned costumes.

The reason?

The school superintendent says Halloween is quote "problematic" for some families due to its connections to witchcraft.

It's not the only holiday on the chopping block.

The school's principal is telling teachers to be careful about celebrating Thanksgiving in their class activities.

All of this comes on the heels of her attack on Columbus Day when she told teachers they could no longer quote: "ignore the atrocities that Christopher Columbus committed against the indigenous peoples."

So, what do you think?

Does the principal have a valid point here or is she going overboard by pushing her own beliefs on teachers and students?

Principal Anne Foley Bans Thanksgiving - xandert

Anne Foley, principal at Kennedy Elementary School in Somerville, Massachusetts banned Thanksgiving and Halloween deeming them as insensitive.

News item October 15, 2011: Massachusetts elementary school principal Anne Foley banned Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Columbus Holiday celebrations because, according to her, they’re insensitive. Her action stirred up considerable outrage and came to US Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown’s attention. He tweeted that political correctness shouldn’t be taken to the extreme and added to allow the Somerville kids enjoy Halloween.

Principal Writes Negative Comments about Christopher Columbus Fall Holiday

According to www.foxnews.com/us/2011/10/15/massachusetts-principal-bans-fall-holidays-says-theyre-insensitive/. Anne Foley claimed that when people were young, they might have been able to claim ignorance of the atrocities that Christopher Columbus committed against the aboriginal peoples, which he did.

US history information about Columbus opening the door to Europeans invading the Americas, according to danielnpaul.com/ChristopherColumbus.html, confirms the fact that Columbus and his crew did terrible things against the aboriginals. Columbus was an Italian. Queen Isabella, who financed his expedition, was Spanish. Columbus is given the credit for discovering the Americas. He anchored his ship by a small island in the Caribbean sea populated by friendly pacifist native people, the Taino. Columbus and his crew pillaged their village. When he returned to Spain, he gave Queen Isabella his stolen booty.

When other European countries heard tales of fabulous wealth in the Americas, they went to the new lands and committed more atrocities.

Principal’s Reasons for Banning Thanksgiving

The Boston Herald reported that Anne Foley sent teachers an email warning them about celebrating Thanksgiving and why people shouldn’t observe it. She wrote that Thanksgiving should no longer be celebrated because many people and Kennedy School’s students celebrating “this particular person,” referring to Columbus, are an insult to the people he annihilated. “We need to be careful around the Thanksgiving Day time as well because of this.” Teachers have already been told not to let students dress up for Halloween.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US and Canada. People are taught about the First Thanksgiving which was celebrated by Pilgrims and Wampanoagans in 1621, but history seems to ignore the Native American Pequot Tribe's 1637 Thanksgiving Travesty. US schoolchildren are taught about the first Thanksgiving when Pilgrims and the Wampanoagans, also “Wampanoags,” celebrated their first harvest by giving thanks and feasting. Samoset and Squanto taught the Pilgrims planting and other survival skills, so Pilgrim leader Captain Miles Standish invited them, Chief Massasoit and other Wampanoagans to the three day celebration.

When news spread in England about the New World, more Puritans and others immigrated. They considered the land to be a public domain because there were no fences. Colonists seized land, captured Amer-Indians for slaves and killed others. The Pequot Nation hadn’t agreed to the peace treaty Squanto negotiated and fought back in The Pequot War.

In 1637, over 700 Pequots gathered for their Green Corn Festival. In the predawn hours, they were surrounded by Dutch and English mercenaries who ordered them to come outside. Those who obeyed were killed, while women and children huddled inside the longhouse and were burned alive. The governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony declared this travesty "A Day of Thanksgiving.”

Colonists and their Amer-Indian allies committed more atrocities. George Washington suggested that one day of “thanksgiving” each year was to be commemorated, instead of celebrating every massacre. Abraham Lincoln decreed Thanksgiving Day to be a legal national holiday.

No Reason Given by Principal for Banning Halloween Costumes

The only mention of Halloween is that Anne Foley banned wearing costumes. Halloween, also called Samhain, pronounced sow-en, is a Pagan holiday. Ancient Pagans Celebrated Hallowe'en, a Fire or Solar Festival as the third and final harvest and honoring the dead. They wore animal pelts to disguise themselves from evil spirits they believed walked on earth that night.

Was Salem's witch hunts and mass hysteria in the 1600s a factor? According to Salem Witch Persecutions Cast, Who Was Who: Victims, 19 people were hanged, one pressed to death because he refused to be tried for witchcraft and four died in prison.

Principals’ Banning Fall Holidays Causes Outrage

Parents told MyFoxBoston they felt Anne Foley was overreacting. A woman said Foley had no right to ban Halloween. Another person said children need to express themselves. Don’t take holidays and fun away from them. A Somerville woman said she didn’t think children shouldn’t be able to celebrate fall holidays.

Superintendant Tony Pierantozzi told The Herald that Halloween is awkward because of its relationship to witchcraft, the first time the subject was mentioned.

Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone, who has three children at Kennedy, stated that he’s the son of Italian immigrants so Columbus Day is “near and dear” to him. He added that he planned on being in costume at Somerville’s annual Halloween parade, which residents say is one of the largest in the greater Boston area.

A few Kennedy students said they disagreed with the ban. One said it wasn’t right to ban Halloween. Another stated that the bans were “kind of ridiculous” because people should be allowed to celebrate holidays how they want to. People shouldn’t dictate holiday celebrations.

Will Principal’s Banning Fall Holidays have Repercussions?

Anne Foley’s ban on celebrating holidays has become a popular news item. hot-news.US/national/Massachusetts Principal Bans Fall Holidays Says they’re Insensitive, categorized the bans in Education, which has a link to the FoxNews article/video. I’ve read people’s comments about Foley’s bans and have talked to others about them. I haven’t found anyone who supports her actions. I celebrate Columbus Day because he is given credit for discovering of the Americas that paved the way for my Pennsylvania Dutch, Czechoslovak and Welsh ancestors to find freedom in the New Country. Halloween is fun, I’m thankful for bountiful food and I think of generations past. Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for food shared with loved ones, family, friends and pets.

Only time will tell if there will be repercussions.

Tragedy! Twenty Members of Seal Team Six, the Unit Responsible for Getting Osama Bin Laden, Killed In Afg... Coincidence?

Is there anybody out there besides me that thinks this is just too much of a coincidence??

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A military helicopter was shot down in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 U.S. special operation troops, most of them from the elite Navy SEALs unit that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, along with seven Afghan commandos. It was the deadliest single incident for American forces in the decade-long war.

The Taliban claimed they downed the helicopter with rocket fire while it was taking part in a raid on a house where insurgents were gathered in the province of Wardak late Friday. It said wreckage of the craft was strewn at the scene. A senior U.S. administration official in Washington said the craft was apparently shot down by insurgents. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the crash is still being investigated.

NATO confirmed the overnight crash took place and that there "was enemy activity in the area." But it said it was still investigating the cause and conducting a recovery operation at the site. It did not release details or casualty figures.

"We are in the process of accessing the facts," said U.S. Air Force Capt. Justin Brockhoff, a NATO spokesman.

One current and one former U.S. official said that the dead included more than 20 Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Six, the unit that carried out the raid in Pakistan in May that killed bin Laden. They were being flown by acrew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because families are still being notified.

President Barack Obama mourned the deaths of the American troops, saying in a statement that the crash serves as a reminder of the "extraordinary sacrifices" being made by the U.S. military and its families. He said he also mourned "the Afghans who died alongside our troops."

The death toll would surpass the worst single day loss of life for the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001 -- the June 28, 2005 downing of a military helicopter in eastern Kunar province. In that incident, 16 Navy SEALs and Army special operations troops were killed when their craft was shot down while on a mission to rescue four SEALs under attack by the Taliban. Three of the SEALs being rescued were also killed and the fourth wounded. It was the highest one-day death toll for the Navy Special Warfare personnel since World War II.

With its steep mountain ranges, providing shelter for militants armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers, eastern Afghanistan is hazardous terrain for military aircraft. Large, slow-moving air transport carriers like the CH-47 Chinook are particularly vulnerable, often forced to ease their way through sheer valleys where insurgents can achieve more level lines of fire from mountainsides.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday gave the first public word of the new crash, saying in a statement that "a NATO helicopter crashed last night in Wardak province" and that 31 American special operations troops were killed. He expressed his condolences to President Barack Obama.

The helicopter was a twin-rotor Chinook, said an official at NATO headquarters in Brussels. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was receiving his information from an Afghan officer in Kabul.

The crash took place in the Sayd Abad district of Wardak province, said a provincial government spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid. The volatile region borders the province of Kabul where the Afghan capital is located and is known for its strong Taliban presence.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement that Taliban fighters downed the helicopter during a "heavy raid" in Sayd Abad. He said NATO attacked a house in Sayd Abad where insurgent fighters were gathering Friday night. During the battle, the fighters shot down the helicopter, killing 31 Americans and seven Afghans, he said, adding that eight insurgents were killed in the fight.

There have been at least 17 coalition and Afghan aircraft crashes in Afghanistan this year.

Most of the crashes were attributed to pilot errors, weather conditions or mechanical failures.

However, the coalition has confirmed that at least one CH-47F Chinook helicopter was hit by a rocket propelled grenade on July 25. Two coalition crew members were injured in that attack.

Meanwhile, in the southern Helmand province, an Afghan government official said Saturday that NATO troops attacked a house and inadvertently killed eight members of a family, including women and children.

NATO said that Taliban fighters fired rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire at coalition troops during a patrol Friday in the Nad Ali district.

"Coalition forces responded with small arms fire and as the incident continued, an air strike was employed against the insurgent position," said Brockhoff. He added that NATO sent a delegation to meet with local leaders and investigate the incident.

Nad Ali district police chief Shadi Khan said civilians died in the bombardment but that it was unknown how many insurgents were killed.

Helmand, a Taliban stronghold, is the deadliest province in Afghanistan for international troops.

NATO has come under harsh criticism in the past for accidentally killing civilians during operations against suspected insurgents. However, civilian death tallies by the United Nations show the insurgency is responsible for most war casualties involving noncombatants.

In south Afghanistan, NATO said two coalition service member were killed, one on Friday and another on Saturday. The international alliance did not release further details.

With the casualties from the helicopter crash, the deaths bring to 365 the number of coalition troops killed this year in Afghanistan and 42 this month.

(Vanity Fair)

This was the largest single loss of life ever for SEAL Team Six.

The Associated Press has learned that more than 20 Navy SEALs from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those lost in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

Update from Fox News… It has been confirmed that the helicopter carrying the Navy Seals plus 7 Afghans was shot down with an RGB. Curiously neither the Taliban nor any Al-Qaeda groups have taken credit? Odd??

My condolences to the families of the 31 Navy Seals that had their lives taken from them in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. My prayers go out to everyone who them loved them all.

Taliban shoot down US CH47 Helicopter- KIA = 22 Navy Seals + 3 AF Air Controllers + Dog Handler/Dog + Air Crew -http://goo.gl/Cd80F

For anyone who questions what really happened to Bin Laden and what happened in that reported raid… the witness list is getting thin! (Bit my bit posts, photos and accounts related to these events are vanishing from the web… soon they will vanish, or be re-written with nobody to verify them, for posterity!)

Obama spreads false claim that Thomas Jefferson hosted first Ramadan iftar dinner at White House

The State Department (Let us not forget the State Dept, Hillary Clinton, Huma Abedin Weiner, Muslim Brotherhood Connection) retails the PC myth in this article, "Thomas Jefferson's Iftar," July 29. Nor is this the first time this falsehood has gone around: the State announcement quotes Barack Obama saying last year: “Ramadan is a reminder that Islam has always been a part of America. The first Muslim ambassador to the United States, from Tunisia, was hosted by President Jefferson, who arranged a sunset dinner for his guest because it was Ramadan — making it the first known iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago.”

Longtime Jihad Watch writer Hugh Fitzgerald busted this myth in his piece "Barack Obama, The New York Times, that Iftar Dinner, and the rewriting of history," which was first published here at Jihad Watch on August 26, 2010. Here it is again:

Barack Obama, The New York Times, that Iftar Dinner, and the rewriting of history
by Hugh Fitzgerald

"The first Muslim ambassador to the United States, from Tunisia, was hosted by President Jefferson, who arranged a sunset dinner for his guest because it was Ramadan --- making it the first known iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago." -- Barack Obama, speaking on August 14, 2010, at the "Annual Iftar Dinner" at the White House

Really? Is that what happened? Was there a "first known iftar at the White House" given by none other than President Thomas Jefferson for the "first Muslim ambassador to the United States"? That's what Barack Obama and his dutiful speechwriters told the Muslims in attendance at the 2010 "Annual Iftar Dinner," knowing full well that the remarks would be published for all to see. Apparently Obama, and those who wrote this speech for him, and others who vetted it, find nothing wrong with attempting to convince Americans, as part of their policy of trying to win Muslim hearts and Muslim minds, that American history itself can be rewritten. A little insidious nunc pro tunc backdating, to rewrite American history. And that rewrite of American history has the goal of convincing Americans, in order to please Muslims, that the United States and Islam, that Americans and Muslims, go way back.

As Obama so unforgettably put it in his Cairo Speech (possibly the most inaccurate, the most cavalier about historical truth, of any speech by any President in American history):

As a student of history, I also know civilization's debt to Islam. It was Islam -- at places like Al-Azhar -- that carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe's Renaissance and Enlightenment. It was innovation in Muslim communities -- (applause) -- it was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed. Islamic culture has given us majestic arches and soaring spires; timeless poetry and cherished music; elegant calligraphy and places of peaceful contemplation. And throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality. (Applause.)

I also know that Islam has always been a part of America's story. The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco. In signing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796, our second President, John Adams, wrote, "The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims." And since our founding, American Muslims have enriched the United States. They have fought in our wars, they have served in our government, they have stood for civil rights, they have started businesses, they have taught at our universities, they've excelled in our sports arenas, they've won Nobel Prizes, built our tallest building, and lit the Olympic Torch. And when the first Muslim American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers -- Thomas Jefferson -- kept in his personal library. (Applause.)

We could go through those two appalling paragraphs with such historians and keen students of history as Gibbon, John Quincy Adams, Tocqueville, Jacob Burckhardt, and Winston Churchill, but that is for another occasion. We could point out that the highly selective quotation - for example from John Adams, whose views on Islam are falsely implied by quoting such a statement as "the United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims" which was mere pleasing rhetoric, and that phrase "in itself" left open the possibility of other reasons for enmity, including Muslim hostility. Not John Adams himself but his son John Quincy Adams (our most learned President), who was far more knowledgeable about Islam, was to write about that:

The precept of the koran is, perpetual war against all who deny, that Mahomet is the prophet of God. The vanquished may purchase their lives, by the payment of tribute; the victorious may be appeased by a false and delusive promise of peace; and the faithful follower of the prophet, may submit to the imperious necessities of defeat: but the command to propagate the Moslem creed by the sword is always obligatory, when it can be made effective. The commands of the prophet may be performed alike, by fraud, or by force.

But John Adams himself drew conclusions about Muslims and Islam that were far from favorable. John Adams' unfavorable view of Islam was obscured and turned on its head by Obama, in quoting that single phrase that was part of negotiations-cum-treaty designed to free American ships and seaman from the ever-present threat of attack by Muslim pirates in North Africa (known to history as the Barbary Pirates). John Adams' unfavorable view of Islam was shared by all those who, in the young Republic, had any dealings at all with Muslim envoys. Thomas Jefferson had a copy of the Qur'an in his library not because he was an admirer of that book, or the faith of Islam, but because he was both curious and cultivated. Muslim Congressman Keith Ellison used Jefferson's own copy of the Qur'an. Yet that copy, since it was translated into English by George Sale, has for most devout Muslims no validity whatsoever, for the Qur'an must be read and understood in Arabic. A Qur'an in a language other than Arabic cannot even be called the "Holy Qur'an," though apparently Obama, and his speechwriters, did not know this, in their fulsome description of Jefferson's copy of the Sale translation that was appropriated by Representative Ellison for his own crude and transparent political ploy. Obama wrongly refers to Sales' version as the "Holy Qur'an," and every Muslim at that dinner knew such a book could not possibly be called that. A small mistake, but then there are so many mistakes, and Obama and his speechwriters are so eager to please, and yet so ignorant withal, that these mistakes add up.

There is not a single American statesman or traveler or diplomat in the days of the early Republic who had a good word for Islam. Look high, look low, consult whatever you want in the National Archives or the Library of Congress, and you will not find any such testimony. And the very idea that someday Muslims, adherents of the fanatical faith of Islam, would be here and would dare to invoke the Freedom of Conscience that is guaranteed by our First Amendment, through both the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses, would have struck them as impossible. For everyone knew then, as so many now apparently do not know, that Islam itself inculcates not freedom of conscience, but blind, unquestioning submission of the individual Muslim to Authority, that is, the Authority of the Qur'an, as glossed by the Sunnah, and the Authority of the Shari'a, the Holy Law of Islam to which all Muslim law codes are supposed to aspire and, ideally, to be modeled on, the Holy Law which embodies, in codified form, the texts and tenets and attitudes of Islam. This, too, Barack Obama and his speechwriters, and such people as John Brennan, Deputy Special Assistant For Homeland Security and Terrorism to the President, apparently do not know.

But let's return to that assertion about Jefferson's "Iftar Dinner," or rather, to that dinner that Barack Obama would have us all believe was the first "Iftar Dinner" at the White House way back in 1805. What actually happened was this.

The American navy, fed up with the constant depredations by Muslim corsairs, who were not so much pirates as Muslims who were encouraged to prey on Christian shipping, and who at times even recorded the areas of the Mediterranean where they planned to go in search of Christian prey, seized a ship that belonged to those who were ruled by the Bey of Tunis. And the Bey of Tunis wanted that ship back. He sent to Washington, for six months, a temporary envoy, one Sidi Soliman Mellimelli, who was not, pace Obama, "the first Muslim ambassador to the United States," but, rather, a temporary envoy.

Here, from the Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia, is a bit of the background to the story:

The crisis with Tunis erupted when the USS Constitution captured Tunisian vessels attempting to run the American blockade of Tripoli. The bey of Tunis threatened war and sent Mellimelli to the United States to negotiate full restitution for the captured vessels and to barter for tribute.

The backdrop to this state visit was the ongoing conflict between the United States and the Barbary states, autonomous provinces of the Ottoman Empire that rimmed the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. Soon after the Revolutionary War and the consequent loss of the British navy's protection, American merchant vessels had become prey for Barbary corsairs. Jefferson was outraged by the demands of ransom for civilians captured from American vessels and the Barbary states' expectation of annual tribute to be paid as insurance against future seizures. He took an uncharacteristically hawkish position against the prevailing thought that it was cheaper to pay tribute than maintain a navy to protect shipping from piracy.

Jefferson balked at paying tribute but accepted the expectation that the host government would cover all expenses for such an emissary. He arranged for Mellimelli and his 11 attendants to be housed at a Washington hotel, and rationalized that the sale of the four horses and other fine gifts sent by the bey of Tunis would cover costs. Mellimelli's request for "concubines" as a part of his accommodations was left to Secretary of State James Madison. Jefferson assured one senator that obtaining peace with the Barbary powers was important enough to "pass unnoticed the irregular conduct of their ministers."

Despite whispers regarding his conduct, Mellimelli received invitations to numerous dinners and balls, and according to one Washington hostess was "the lion of the season." At the president's New Year's Day levee the Tunisian envoy provided "its most brilliant and splendid spectacle," and added to his melodramatic image at a later dinner party hosted by the secretary of state. Upon learning that the Madisons were unhappy at being childless, Mellimelli flung his "magical" cloak around Dolley Madison and murmured an incantation that promised she would bear a male child. His conjuring, however, did not work.

Differences in culture and customs stirred interest on both sides. Mellimelli's generous use of scented rose oil was noted by many of those who met him, and guards had to be posted outside his lodgings to turn away the curious. For his part, the Tunisian was surprised at the social freedom women enjoyed in America and was especially intrigued by several delegations of Native Americans from the western territories then visiting Washington. Mellimelli inquired which prophet the Indians followed: Moses, Jesus Christ or Mohammed. When he was told none of them, that they worshiped "the Great Sprit" alone, he was reported to have pronounced them "vile hereticks."

So that's it. Sidi Soliman Mellimelli installed himself for six months at a Washington hotel, for which the American government apparently picked up the tab. And as to that request for "concubines," apparently Jefferson asked the Secretary of State, James Madison, to attend to the matter. It's amusing to note how little the behavior of Muslim and Arab rulers has changed. It is only we who do not see them, or allow ourselves to see them, as primitive and exotic creatures to be amused by or often contemptuous of, but not as creatures to whom we need accord any undo respect, for their sole claim on our attention is that some of them, through an accident of geology, have acquired a lot of money. And there are people in Washington who are happy, in their desire to do well themselves, to convince the American government that it must bend over backwards in treating of Arabs and Muslims. There is no need to do so, and it is easy to show why not. In fact, the description of Mellimelli's requests may put many in mind of how so many Muslim and Arab rulers, including "plucky little king" Hussein of Jordan, when they used to come to Washington, would have round-the-clock escort girls service them in their hotel rooms. But what was most maddening was that the bills were paid by the ever-compliant C.I.A. I presume the oil money has made that, in some cases, no longer necessary.

Sidi Soliman Mellimelli was quite an exotic specimen:

The curious were not to be disappointed by the appearance of the first Muslim envoy to the United States - a large figure with a full dark beard dressed in robes of richly embroidered fabrics and a turban of fine white muslin.

Over the next six months, this exotic representative from a distant and unfamiliar culture would add spice to the Washington social season but also test the diplomatic abilities of President Jefferson.

During the six solar months Mellimelli was here, the lunar month of Ramadan occurred. And as it happens, during that Ramadan observed by Mellimelli, but naturally unobserved, hardly noticed, by the Americans, President Jefferson invited Sidi Soliman Mellimelli for dinner at the White House. He probably during that six-month period had done it more than once. Mellimelli replied that he could not come at the appointed hour of three thirty in the afternoon (our ancestors rose much earlier, and ate much earlier, and went to bed much earlier, in the pre-Edison days of their existence). That time fell, for him, but not for Thomas Jefferson or anyone else in the United States of America, during the fasting period of the month of Ramadan. He replied that he could not come at the hour set, that is, at half-past three, but only after sundown.

Jefferson, a courteous man, simply moved the dinner forward by a few hours. He didn't change the menu, he didn't change anything else. And moving the dinner forward by a few hours hardly turns that dinner into a soi-disant "Iftar Dinner." Barack Obama's trying to do so, trying that is, to rewrite American history, with some nunc-pro-tunc backdating, in order to flatter or please his Muslim guests, is false. And, being false, is also disgusting. It is disgusting for an American President to misrepresent American history to Americans, including all the schoolchildren who are now being subject to all kinds of Islamic propaganda, cunningly woven into the newly-mandated textbooks, that so favorably misrepresent Islam, as here.

Now there is a kind of coda to this dismal tale, and it is provided by the New York Times, which likes to put on airs and think of itself as "the newspaper of record," whatever that means. The Times carried a front-page story on August 14, 2010, written by one Sheryl Gay Stolberg, and no doubt gone over by many vigilant editors. This story contains a predictably glowing account of Barack Obama's remarks at the "Annual Iftar Dinner." Here is the paragraph that caught my eye:

In hosting the iftar, Mr. Obama was following a White House tradition that, while sporadic, dates to Thomas Jefferson, who held a sunset dinner for the first Muslim ambassador to the United States. President George W. Bush hosted iftars annually.

Question for Sheryl Gay Stolberg, and for her editors at The New York Times: You report that there is a "White House tradition that, while sporadic, dates to Thomas Jefferson." I claim that you are wrong. I claim that there is no White House Tradition at all about Iftar Dinners. I claim that Thomas Jefferson, in moving forward by a few hours a dinner that changed in no other respect, for Sidi Soliman Mellimelli, was not providing the first of the "Annual Iftar Dinners" that, the New York Times tells us, has since Jefferson's non-existent "Iftar Dinner," have been observed "sporadically."

When, then, was the next in this long, but "sporadic" series of iftar dinners? I can find no record of any, for roughly the next two hundred years, until we come to the fall of the year 2001, that is, just after the deadliest attack on American civilians ever recorded, an attack carried out by a novemdectet of Muslims acting according to their understanding of the very same texts -- Qur'an,Hadith, Sira -- that all Muslims read, an understanding that many have demonstrated since that they share, not least in the spontaneous celebrations that were immediately held in Cairo, and Riyadh, and Jeddah, and in Ramallah, and Gaza, and Damascus, and Baghdad, and all over the place, where Muslims felt that they had won a victory over those accursed kuffar, those ingrates, those Infidels. And it was President George Bush who decided that, to win Muslim "trust" or to end Muslim "mistrust" -- I forget which -- so that we could, non-Muslim and Muslim, collaborate on defeating those "violent extremists" who had "hijacked a great religion," started this sporadic ball un-sporadically rolling. And he did it, by golly, he did. He hosted an Iftar Dinner with all the fixins. It was held just the month after the attacks prompted by Islamic texts and tenets and attitudes on the World Trade Center, on the Pentagon, on a plane's doomed pilots and passengers over a field in Pennsylvania.

And thus it is, that ever since 2001, we have had iftar dinner after iftar dinner. But it was not Jefferson or any other of our cultivated and learned Presidents, who started this "tradition" that has been observed only "sporadically" -- i.e., never -- until George Bush came along, unless we are to count as an "iftar dinner" what was merely seen, by Jefferson, as a dinner given at a time convenient for his not-too-honored guest.

Yes, and how splendidly Bush, and now Obama, have proven to Muslims that there are no hard feelings. Do you think the three trillion dollars spent in Iraq and now in Afghanistan (not counting the hundreds of billions that, over time, have gone to Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, even the "Palestinian" territories), have done that? It has all been designed to improve the lot of Muslims on the unproven assumption that this will make them less attentive to the texts, the ideology, of their Total Belief-System, and hence more willing to grandly concede to us Infidels a territory of our own, a place in the sun of our own. Yes, George Bush, that profound student of history and of ideas, kept telling us, in those first few months after 9/11/2001, that as far as he was concerned, by gum, Islam was a religion of "peace and tolerance." And just to prove it, by golly, he'd put on an Iftar Dinner with all the fixins. And that's just what he did. And that's how the "tradition" that Sheryl Gay Stolberg, and her many vetting editors at the newspaper of comical record, The New York Times, began. It's all of nine years old, through the disastrous presidencies of Bush and now of Obama.

And stop rewriting history, in ways little and big, about the American "connection" to Islam - including that absurd attempt on the front page of The New York Times just yesterday, to run a story on Christians from the Middle East, fleeing Islam and Muslims for the United States (as they fled, too, to South America, or to Australia) and appropriating the history of Arabic-speaking Maronite and Orthodox immigrants in that story on "Little Syria" to make American readers think that "see, Arabs, Muslim Arabs, go a long way back in New York City, so let's not get so hot and bothered about a little mosque someone wants to build." Was there ever such deceit, day after day, than in the way The New York Times has become a willing collaborator with the O.I.C., and others who want nonstop Mister Feelgood stories about Islam in America?

I have a request for The New York Times. It's a most modest one. All I ask -- I never ask, or expect, very much -- is that the editors of The New York Times apologize for that paper's misapplication of the adjective "sporadic" in the front-page story by Sheryl Stolberg on the "Annual Iftar" dinner.

Put up, or shut up, dear newspaper of record. Tell us when that "tradition" of "Iftar Dinners" truly began. Cite those Presidents who held dinners that they considered to be "Iftar Dinners." Give us chapter, give us verse. And if, as I believe, that hollow and recent and transparently determined-to-win-Muslim-hearts-and-minds "tradition" began in 2001, then tell us. And since your story was on the front page, do what the lawyers do when they have to make legal announcements, and put your retraction, eat your humble pie, right on the front page.

A failure to do so will be further, and for some the final confirmation, of the sorry record of The New York Times in its coverage of Islam. Most readers with some sense of what Islam is all about, even those who lack detailed knowledge, are now ready to take any coverage of the matter in The New York Times with a grain - with a Pinch - of salt.

Clio, Muse of History, is a stern mistress. Subscribers to stories that live and die between editions may forget or forgive, but Mnemosyne does neither. If I were the "newspaper of record," I'd want to propitiate not the gods, but the most vigilant and meticulous of muses. If I were Pinch Sulzberger, I'd be mortally embarrassed, and determined to make amends. But then, I have standards.
