Beck’s Back: TheBlazeTV Celebrates One-Year Anniversary With DISH Network Launch

Continuing on an upward trajectory, Wednesday marks the one-year anniversary of TheBlazeTV– formerly GBTV — with a significant expansion into the world of satellite television. Partnering with DISH Network, Glenn Beck’s online 24-hour news, information and entertainment network will now be available on television exclusively on DISH, joining a host of channels including MSNBC, BBC America, CNN, Current, Comedy Central and FOX News.

After launching exactly one year ago, TheBlazeTV rapidly grew into one of the world’s most subscribed-to online streaming networks. TheBlazeTV will be available to DISH viewers on channel 212 as part of DISH’s America’s Top 250 package or a la carte for $5 a month. The channel launches on Wednesday, September 12, at 5 p.m. EDT.

TheBlaze and its host of established and emerging talent including Andrew Wilkow, S.E. Cupp, Buck Sexton and Will Cain, will offer its programming as a free preview for all DISH customers through Sept. 26.

Of course, TheBlazeTV will continue to be available online at TheBlaze.com, where on-demand programs can be accessed with the click of a mouse-pad.

“After being phenomenally successful with his online streaming network, we’re pleased to host Glenn Beck’s return to broadcast TV, especially during this exciting and important political season,” said DISH CEO and President Joseph Clayton in an official press release. “With Glenn’s return, DISH is truly the one stop for news, opinion and perspective across the full political spectrum.”

Excited for the future, Beck added, “TheBlaze has helped revolutionize television over the Internet and now we are excited to bring the revolution back to traditional television.”

“TheBlaze will be home to news, information and entertainment programming with the facts and stories people care about most and we look forward to kicking things off with DISH.”

Christopher Balfe, CEO of TheBlaze also weighed in, stating that the goal of the company was to “deliver TV over the Internet, not Internet TV.”

“Twelve months later, we’ve succeeded beyond our wildest imagination with content that built one of the world’s largest subscription streaming networks,” he added.

The line-up of programs will continue to grow, as well as feature all of the familiar faces people from around the world have come to know — from The Glenn Beck Program to Liberty TreeHouse, Real News From TheBlaze, to a brand new program hosted by Andrew Wilkow.

What’s more, TheBlaze.com concluded August with its best month ever, hosting over 9 million unique visitors and is led by a formidable team of media veterans including: President and CCO Joel Cheatwood, formerly a Senior Vice President at FoxNews and CNN, President and Chief Revenue Officer Kraig Kitchin who co-founded Premiere Radio Networks, and Betsy Morgan, President & Chief Strategy Officer who formerly served as CEO of The Huffington Post and as a Senior Vice President at CBS News.

WALL STREET JOURNAL: GBTV ALREADY HAS MORE SUBSCRIBERS THAN OPRAH’S NETWORK HAS VIEWERS

Many people thought Glenn Beck might have been a little bit crazy (little bit?) to leave the safety and support of traditional cable television to launch his internet-based GBTV enterprise.  But the news from the Wall Street Journal today may cause even the critics some pause.

Beck’s GBTV broadcast will launch at 5PM ET this afternoon, complete with an all-new chalkboard!

Because Mr. Beck owns the show and the network, he could make substantially more than the $2.5 million salary he got each year at Fox. GBTV is on track to take in more than $20 million in revenue in its debut year, according to a person close to the company.

The television industry will be watching closely to see whether the TV host can preserve his popularity while migrating to the Web, where efforts to get consumers to pay to watch online-only channels are just beginning.

When Mr. Beck announced GBTV in June, the network had 80,000 subscribers. In the months since, GBTV subscribers have swelled to more than 230,000, according to people close to the network, even though Mr. Beck‘s show hasn’t yet begun.

The audience is far less than the more than 2.2 million daily viewers his program on Fox drew, on average, over its 27-month run, which ended in June after clashes with the network’s management.

But it is more than the average 156,000 people who were watching the Oprah Winfrey Network in June.

One writer at Forbes has looked at the numbers and done a little extrapolation:

Analyst Rich Greenfield of BTIG Research estimates that GBTV is already generating revenues of $27 million a year from subscription fees by monetizing a mere 1 percent of the total audience for his Fox show, his radio show, his websites (glennbeck.com and theblaze.com) and other outlets. Greenfield envisions Beck increasing that conversion rate to 5 percent, yielding a subscriber base of over 1 million. In that scenario, extrapolating from Greenfield’s current run rate estimate of $27 million, GBTV would be generating $135 million in subscription revenues.

The Forbes writer, Jeff Bercovici, acknowledges that those estimates might be optimistic.  But he posits that Beck is on course to the $100 million dollar earnings barrier “sooner than later” when you consider all of his media endeavors.

Deadline New York is running with a headline reading, “Analyst: Media Execs ‘Should Be Very Afraid’ of Glenn Beck’s Web TV Launch.”

Mediate looks at it this way:

While Beck’s online venture is still relatively new, it’ll continue to be interesting to observe the different trajectories GBTV and OWN take as they forge their way. Here are two networks, albeit on different platforms, begun by two individuals who are themselves highly recognizable mega-brands. One is gradually building an audience as another is still hoping to find its place on television, and both depend highly on the trust viewers place on their respective founding personalities. Could you imagine what an episode devoted to Beck’s “favorite things” might pan out? Sales of chalk could go through the roof.

BECK SAYS CHAVEZ NOT HAPPY ABOUT PLANNED STOP IN VENEZUELA

On radio Thursday, Glenn Beck told his audience that while on his way to South Africa, there was a curious incident that occurred during a planned stopover in Egypt.* But what we didn’t know yesterday is why. Now we do: it’s partly because of Hugo Chavez.

Beck told the Chavez-related story on his show Friday, and said that Chavez raised questions about Beck’s planned stop in Venezuela, and those questions were relayed to Beck during his stop in Egypt.

“I am informed by [my chief of staff] Joe that Hugo Chavez wanted a detailed itinerary of what I was planning on doing in Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela, and Hugo didn’t like it, and he would not allow my plane to land in Venezuela,” he explained.

Beck is planning on visiting South America as part of a special leg of a global human rights campaign.

Despite the push back from Chavez, however, Beck may have gotten the last laugh. According to him, he has “found a way” to still get his message across in the dictator’s country: via technology.*

“Hugo believes that he is going to stop people like me from speaking out and speaking their mind,” Beck said.

The heat of the afternoon sun in Jerusalem could not match the fervor of Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Courage” call to follow a “pillar of fire” in pursuit of the truth and wisdom.

After months of preparation, the controversial event unfolded smoothly with Beck telling the large crowd, “I have been asked: What can you teach Israel about Courage?   My answer is simple.  Nothing.  Then they ask: Why are you coming to Israel? Because, I say: In Israel, you see courage.”

Beck described the world as “confused,” and pointed to flash points in Europe as signs of societies losing touch with philosophical moorings:

“In Europe, the great nations of the past – Greece, Italy, Spain, Britain – are falling into chaos and violence.

We have raised up a generation who cannot tell the difference between what they owe society and what society owes them.

They interviewed the rioters in England. Why, they were asked, are you stealing shoes or televisions. “Because,” the rioters said in response, “because we deserve them.”

We may think: Oh, how different are today’s youth! But the young merely imitate their parents. They have seen how the world reacts to evil – with indifference. They watch, they learn, they imitate. What one generation tolerates, the next generation will embrace.”

Anti-Beck protests chanted from outside the Old City walls, but groups of pro-Beck Israelis countered with signs and songs of their own.

Beck challenged the live crowd and those watching on his new GBTV network to read what he is calling a Declaration of Rights & Responsibilities:

In order to continually experience life, liberty and happiness as promised, nature’s God demands obedience to His law to protect those rights.

This is where we have fallen short and therefore, in order not to lose the blessings of freedom, the people of the world must turn from the sole focus on rights, and recognize the inherent and required responsibilities that we have.

Among the responsibilities to which we must adhere to maintain our God given rights are honor, courage and vigilance.

Over time, we believe that these basic human responsibilities have been trampled, and replaced with degradation, fear and apathy.

Saying that “it didn’t take a prophet to see these things,” Beck described his growing concern that turbulent world affairs would bode ill for Israel:

“And so this year, when I saw Tunisia’s and Egypt’s rulers crack and fall and the world called it the Arab Spring, I said: Where could this be going? And behind these revolutions was a familiar force, a force that will place those nations under a new pharaoh. And that force, I said, would come up to the borders of Israel. And so it has.

We are not at the mercy of these events. We can alter the course of history. We can stand against the dangerous arc of this story.

But we need people who are willing to speak truth. We need inspiration. We need a model to follow.”

Beck said that at the conclusion of his speech he would leave that instant for South Africa:

“Some people call Israel an apartheid state. I reject that. And so immediately following this program I will fly to South Africa, which is where apartheid actually existed. I will broadcast from Cape Town tomorrow morning to remind the world what the evil of apartheid really looked like.

And I will learn from the people who conquered the hatred, ignorance and bigotry and who chartered a peaceful course for a new South Africa.

Then on Friday I will fly to South America to plead the case of human responsibility to a group of nearly 5,000 local leaders from all over the continent and ask them to join me in standing in defense of Israel, the Jewish people and responsibility.

Finally on Sunday, I will speak to 5,000 Americans in Dallas, Texas.   I have chosen to end my week in the town where I will headquarter the charitable division of my company, Mercury One.  Dedicated to the idea that one man, inspired by one God, makes a difference. This trip will end where a global moment begins.”

While Glenn Beck’s Restoring Courage event in Israel appeared to go off without a hitch to those watching, he revealed on radio Thursday that he and his team were forced to make last-minute changes because several confirmed participants faced threats, including threats on their lives.

Beck said that the choir scheduled to perform canceled just days before the finale after they were called into a meeting last Friday and told they would be dismissed, and would probably never work again, if they contributed their talents. Despite being in full support of the program, they decided that the consequences were just too great.

The choir that performed, then, was “cobbled together” after the original choir canceled on Sunday.

Several others suffered similar threats, including death threats.

“I have to tell you some of the stories that I wasn’t able to tell you before and let’s start with this,” Beck explained while broadcasting from South Africa. “Yesterday, if you watched the broadcast on GBTV, if you watched the whole event that unfolded at the Temple Mount, what you may not know is how many people canceled at the last minute, and not because they were, you know, ‘I’m not going to stand with him,’ none of that. The reason why they canceled is because they were under death threat.”

In fact, Beck revealed that an Arab participant couldn’t even sing words when he took the stage. Instead, he could only utter melodic moans — anything else could have cost him his life.

“I don’t blame them for this at all,” Beck said regarding those who decided to pull out. You can listen to him explain the threats and the changes below:

Yesterday Glenn Beck and his audience began a new chapter.  His life at Fox and on mainstream TV ended as he exited the stage of his Fox News set for the last time with one last “From New York, Goodnight, America”.

Beck, who ad-libbed much of his last hour as an FNC host, spoke candidly about the decision to launch a web-based TV channel, saying he hoped he had earned viewers’ trust on “The Glenn Beck Show.” “Anyone watching this show knows that I have bent this format so far out of its structure, out of its parameters,” Beck said. “This is a news channel. UN CHIEF ACTUALLY APPLAUDS IRANIAN COUNTERTERRORISM CONFERENCE BASHING US, UK, & ‘ISRAELI REGIME’

A spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon confirmed today that the secretary general sent a message in support of an Iranian government “counter-terrorism conference” in Tehran.

Ban’s spokesman, Farhan Haq, made no attempt to distance the Secretary General from the message, or deflect criticism by portraying it as media hype on the part of the West or Iran. On the contrary, Haq said:

“The secretary-general believes that all nations, all peoples are affected by terrorism; and that it is imperative that we involved as many states, as many peoples as possible in the fight against terrorism”

Iran has been at the top of the State Department’s list of terrorism sponsoring states for years. Moreover, it is known to support terrorist regimes across the mid-east region and beyond, including Hamas and Hezbollah.

This Brookings policy paper by noted mid-east security expert Daniel Byman, sums it up well in the first line- “Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran has been one of the world’s most active sponsors of terrorism.”

For good measure, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was also in attendance. There is currently an outstanding International Criminal Court warrant for Bashir’s arrest for his (alleged) war crimes.

Glenn Beck Planning Web TV Channel GBTV, Tagline: ‘The Truth Lives Here’

Outgoing Fox News host Glenn Beck and his company, Mercury Radio Arts, are developing a new service called “GBTV,” which will be a web-based TV channel, according to sources familiar with the matter as well as trademark applications filed by the company.

GBTV will be based at GBTV.com, which Mercury acquired in January.

Mercury also filed a trademark on a tagline for the channel: “The Truth Lives Here,” as well as a logo (pictured after the jump), based on the logo for his “InsiderExtreme” subscription service.

The trademark applications are limited exclusively to programming delivered via the internet, so it is not likely that GBTV will become an actual TV network anytime in the near future. Mercury also filed the GBTV trademark for ancillary products, like DVDs, podcasts, mobile applications and video games.

Back in March, the New York Times floated the possibility that Beck would either start his own cable channel, or expand his presence on the web:

“Two of the options Mr. Beck has contemplated…are a partial or wholesale takeover of a cable channel, or an expansion of his subscription video service on the Web,” The Times wrote.

The cable channel angle got more pickup but it is the Internet-based channel that seems likely to come to fruition, at least in the short-term. We noted the challenges a Glenn Beck-branded cable channel would have here.

Beck recently hired former Fox News executive Joel Cheatwood to join Mercury, and one source familiar with the situation says that Cheatwood is hard at work developing programming concepts for GBTV.

The actual business model for GBTV remains unclear. It may be free to view, with revenue derived from advertising and other revenue streams like DVDs or smartphone apps. A more likely scenario is that people would subscribe to GBTV by paying a monthly fee–as they do for “InsiderExtreme”–and would be able to access that content from whichever platform they choose.

Mercury Radio Arts also announced another big internet play this week: MarkDown.com, a “daily deals” site in the same vein as Groupon.

“Glenn has always been ahead of the digital curve with GlennBeck.com, InsiderExtreme, TheBlaze and Markdown and as has been previously reported, this is one of the ideas that he has been exploring for some time,” a source told TVNewser.

For now, of course, Beck remains on Fox News Channel, but when his TV program ends, it certainly looks like his new home will be online.

GBTV, Restoring Courage Event and Deals for the Consumer

Glenn Beck and his company, Mercury Radio Arts, are developing a web-based TV channel called “GBTV, according to TVNewser, which quoted sources familiar with the matter as well as trademark applications filed by the company.

GBTV will be based at GBTV.com, which Mercury acquired in January.

A possible tagline for the channel -- “The Truth Lives Here” -- has been trademarked by Mercury, as well as a logo based on the logo for his “InsiderExtreme” subscription service.
It is not likely that GBTV will become an actual TV network anytime in the near future. Mercury also filed the GBTV trademark for ancillary products, like DVDs, podcasts, mobile applications and video games, TVNewser reported.

Glenn Beck's Surprise Trip to Israel

This morning on Glenn Beck's talk radio program, it was announced that Glenn Beck is on a surprise trip to Israel, and they might have a big announcement about the future tomorrow.

Glenn Beck won't be on TV today, since he's still on the other side of the planet, and presumably Judge Napolitano or some other fill-in will be doing Glenn's TV show tonight.

Personally, I'm pretty excited to see what Glenn has up his sleeve. Here's what GlennBeck.com had to say about it:

Glenn decided late last week to make a surprise trip to Israel, and is off radio and TV today to visit the country. He plans to broadcast his radio show tomorrow, Tuesday May 10th. Glenn has been taking a strong and vocal stand for Israel since the beginning of the year – and you can hear him make his case in the clip above from the March 29th TV show. Glenn will also be speaking at the “Christians United for Israel” event in Washington, DC on July 19th. Get the details here.

BECK ARRIVES IN ISRAEL: GLENN REVEALS INFORMATION ABOUT SURPRISE TRIP

If you were listening to Glenn on the radio Friday morning, you may have heard him say something curious right at the end of the program. He asked listeners to pray for him over the weekend. He promised he would be praying for the listeners in return.

Now we are learning more about the motivation behind the request.
Glenn is in Israel right now.

Over the next few days we’ll be learning more and more about the reasons why.

Beck has been talking a great deal about Israel lately, particularly his concern that “Israel is being set up”:

This is not Glenn’s first trip to Israel. Shortly after 9-11, he scheduled a trip so that he could learn more about the origins of conflict in the region.

“I had done some reading but I didn’t understand until I went there,” Beck told me by phone. I talked with him a length on Friday and again on Saturday just prior to his departure.

He vividly remembers that experience a decade ago: “The Temple Mount almost pulsated. I could feel it.”

So, why this sudden trip? He’s working on a project. The decision to go this weekend was made just a few days ahead of time.

During our phone conversation, he spoke with a measured enthusiasm, indicating the project is deeply important to him and that he hoped have more information to reveal very soon.

“It’s time to get out of the studio and get involved,” Beck told me.

He spoke of the “courage and compassion” he sees in the Jewish people and his desire to amplify that message.

Beck was deeply moved by the murders of five members of the Fogel family in the West Bank town of Itamar. Two Palestinian teenagers have been arrested in the slayings. Beck has focused on the firm response of Fogel relatives: “They have refused to turn it into hate.”

Glenn has talked about the Fogels at length on radio and TV and hopes to learn more about the family during this trip.

Glenn says this trip, and the project that will unfold, is “because of my commitment to Israel and the Jewish people.”

He said that, as a “student of history,” he feels “crisis is coming” for Israel and that it is time for supporters of Israel to take stand.

Of that first trip to Jerusalem, Beck remembers thinking, “It’s the axis point of the world. Where man connected with God.” He seemed eager say more about what the next few days may reveal, but he did not give a timeline. The tone and focus, though, seemed clear: “Courage and compassion.”
