Why We Have No Budget and Why It Can’t Be Balanced

“We receive wake up call after wake up call and all to no avail because our government is either economically illiterate and doesn’t understand the problem of spending other people's money even after other people run out of money, or is too ideologically committed.  The best, but radical, thing that we could/should do is to cut entitlements and foreign aid immediately, knowing full well that could start rioting. And even that would be just the beginning, it will be like chipping away at an iceberg (See the video below)”  …Gary the Rat

And yet…

Obama Ends Welfare Reform as We Know It, Calls for $12.7 Trillion in New Welfare Spending putting us even further into debt to try and garner votes for his re-election.  President Obama has also played the smoke and mirrors game pandering to students on the backs of seniors by hiding a provision in the transportation bill covering first year college loan fees with money from the already broke social security fund.

The people we have in the White House now and most that we have in Congress are not capable or not willing to do what needs to be done to fix the problems.  And many don’t even understand the problem and are ideologically blinded.

President Obama and the Senate under the leadership of Harry Reid purposely kept this from the American people by not passing a budget or bringing on to vote in years.

All issues other than fixing the economy and jobs are diversions and secondary at this point.

In November we must clean house from President Obama on down or our ship of state will sink!

OBAMA’S HISTORIC PRESIDENCY

Technorati Tags:
By: AJ - Hat Tip: MJ

clip_image001

“Historic” may be an understatement when describing Barack Obama’s Presidency. When we consider what Obama has done in his first term, it is easy to see that he has excelled in many areas that prior President’s have never thought to tread. As we explore some of Obama’s historic achievements, his definition of “change” becomes clearer.

Unemployed College Graduates: For the first time in US history, there are more jobless people who attended college than those who didn’t; a historic Obama achievement.

Poverty: The US now has the highest poverty rate – ever! All prior Presidents failed to plunge more families into poverty than Obama. Imagine how many more families can slide into poverty if Obama gets a second term. He’ll be able to beat his own historic record.

Food Stamps: Obama has broken all records when it comes to doling out food stamps. Before Obama’s Presidency, $39 billion from taxpayers was spent for food stamp recipients. In 2012, $81 billion is now spent on food stamps thanks to Obama’s historic increase in less than 4 years in office. He’s done an outstanding job of implementing the Cloward & Piven strategy.

Unemployment Rate: If the labor force was the same size now as when Obama took office, unemployment is at 11%. The historic decline of the US labor force during Obama’s Presidency has put us back to what it was in 1981. If we include people who are underemployed in today’s labor force, the unemployment rate is actually 14%. Even if we consider the BLS unemployment rate, which was 7.3% when Obama took office, we know he promised it wouldn’t hit 8%. Well, it has remained above 8% throughout his Presidency and has remained high for the longest time-period in recorded history. Obama has decreased private sector jobs and increased government jobs. Since there are 7.7 million less working people since Obama took office, his current claim that he created over 4 million jobs is nothing short of a historic lie.

Economic Recovery: In 2008 under President Bush, TARP was a massive, and arguably deceptive spending bill designed to avert a professed financial collapse when the Carter-Clinton-Cuomo “Community Reinvestment Act” chickens finally came home to roost. Just months later when Obama took office in 2009, he doubled-down with his Omnibus bill (filled with 9000 earmarks, which he signed behind closed doors), the largest Stimulus spending bill in US history, plus other 2009 spending bills passed by the Democrat-controlled House and Senate totaling $4+ trillion. Despite the most massive government spending in one year by any President – ever – Obama has managed to ensure the worst economic recovery – in history! But wait… Obama’s historic achievement gets better… since the Harry Reid-controlled Senate has refused to pass a budget each year since Obama’s 2009 $4+ trillion spending bills, continuing resolutions have refunded all of those bills. That’s right – all of Obama’s 2009 spending bills, including the failed 2009 Stimulus bill, get refunded each and every year (so we’ve had 4 Obama Stimulus’ since he took office). Truly historic, isn’t it?

Household Net Worth: “The Federal Reserve said the median net worth of families plunged by 39 percent in just three years, from $126,400 in 2007 to $77,300 in 2010. That puts Americans roughly on par with where they were in 1992.” Obama’s historic achievement sealed the deal on setting American families back 20 years. Just imagine how much farther back we’ll be if Obama is re-elected.

Gas Prices: The nationwide average was $1.84 per gallon of regular gas when Obama took office and it’s never looked back. Obama said that under his plan, energy prices would necessarily skyrocket. Obama is the first US President to fulfill such a promise with deliberate intent to cause significant, daily financial impact to all Americans.

Food Prices: Compare your family’s food expense to what you were paying less than 4 years ago and you’ll see the steep rise in food prices… not to mention the shrinking package sizes. Obama has seized on the rising food prices by inspiring large cities throughout the nation to ban Americans from feeding the hungry and donating to food banks. No President in the history of our nation has ever taken such a historic step.

Home Ownership: Obama’s historic success reversed 46 years of progress made by American families when home ownership hit its lowest level since 1965 on his watch and despite all his mortgage bailout gimmicks, slush funds and massive bailouts for government-owned-and-operated Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Corporate Tax Rate: Thanks to Obama, the US enjoys the highest jobs-killing corporate income tax rate in the industrialized world! Businesses are handing over more of their hard-earned dollars to Obama than in any other industrialized country on the planet. This is a historic achievement which enables businesses to feed Obama’s government leviathan rather than spend that money on salaries and benefits for new employees.

National Debt: Obama has spent more of our money than any head-of-state in the history of the world. In less than 4 years, Obama succeeded in over-spending by over $5 trillion, causing our national debt to rise beyond our entire yearly US GDP. In other words, he spent all of the $2 to $3 trillion per year that taxpayers gave him, plus an additional $1.3 trillion each year, which caused an accumulated debt in excess of $5 trillion in less than 4 years. [Note: National Debt was $10.6 trillion when Obama took office; it’s now nearly $16 trillion]. In addition, the amount of US Debt held by the Federal Reserve (a private banking cartel) increased by a historic 452% under Obama and now sits at $1.688 Trillion.

US Credit Rating: For the first time in the history of our nation, we lost our AAA credit rating. No other US President has ever achieved this. Obama’s accomplishment in this area is absolutely historic.

Industry Takeovers: Food, healthcare, banks, student loans, energy, land, homes, farms, cars, water, the internet, the media… and the list goes on. Obama has taken over more private sector industries than any other President in history. In addition to nationalizing numerous industries to put an end to our pesky free market system that’s made America the most generous, advanced and prosperous nation the world has ever known, Obama’s masterful assault extends to controlling what we, as individuals, must do and cannot do with regard to our own bodies, our faith, our families and all other aspects of our lives. Obama’s historic achievement in this arena is unprecedented.

Small Businesses: Remember when Bush opened the door for Obama to take over the auto industry and dealerships were forced to close? Obama hand-picked and dictated the closure of dealerships owned by people who leaned ‘right’ politically. Also, from the start of his Presidency, to the outrageous assault against Gibson Guitars, to all the people Obama put out of business (fishermen, farmers, workers in the oil, coal and natural gas industry, retailers, restaurants, etc.), to the burdensome regulations from Cass Sunstein that prevent people from even starting a business, Obama has waged a historic war against small businesses and has done a spectacular job of de-industrializing America. If re-elected, we won’t need to worry that our children can no longer put up a lemonade stand or have a bake sale; we’ll be worried about feeding our children. Obama’s mission of transforming America into a third world country will be complete – something no US President in the history of our nation has ever even attempted.

Religion: Obama is carrying out the most intense and vicious attack against religion, in violation of the first amendment, than any President in the history of our nation. As David Barton said, “The hostility of President Obama toward Biblical faith and values is without equal from any previous American president.”

United Nations: Obama is the first US President ever to preside over the United Nations. Our Constitution forbids it, but Obama wouldn’t be historic if he followed the laws of our land.

Russia: “Believing himself off the record, President Obama, then in Russia, leaned over to outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, and said in reference to prospective negotiations on reduction of American missile defenses: “This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility.” In response, Medvedev replied in English, “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladmir,” meaning to incoming President (and de facto Russian dictator) Vladmir Putin.”

National Security Leaks: Obama’s White House is responsible for the most dangerous and numerous national security leaks of our time. Costing Navy Seals and Special Ops Forces their lives, Obama released the identities of those who took out Osama Bin Laden. Also, from the Stuxnet cyber warfare against Iran - to Obama’s kill list- to the 2009 release of CIA memos - to divulging Britain’s defense secrets to Russia - to revealing Israel’s defense secrets to Iran – to drone strikes - to releasing details about the newest underwear bomb device, Obama’s White House has been on a treasonous rampage by publicizing information that threatens national security and puts American lives and U.S. interests at risk. What adds to the historic nature of these crimes is Congress’ inability to appoint a Special Council to investigate. Obama has decided to have his Department of Injustice (Eric Holder) appoint special prosecutors to investigate the executive branch AND the legislature. Really? Unbelievable, isn’t it? Perhaps Eric Holder will want Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to be the first legislator investigated since she publicly stated, “I’ve been on the Intelligence Committee for 11 years and I have never seen it worse, I can tell you that” regarding the Obama White House leaks.

Black Panthers: Obama’s injustice department dropped the charges against Defendants in the worst case of voter intimidation in our lifetime. Obama’s historic mandate, carried out by Eric Holder ensures that the pursuit of justice is based solely on skin color. Violating our anti-discrimination laws – in other words, letting criminals get away with their crimes based solely on the color of their skin – is truly historic and reverses everything we accomplished regarding Civil Rights that ensure all men are treated equally regardless of the color of their skin.

Fast and Furious: In 2009, Obama’s DOJ rolled out their new “Fast and Furious” gun program (after Obama and Hilary Clinton falsely claimed that 90% of the foreign guns found in Mexico come from the US). Obama’s new program sent thousands of US guns to Mexican drug cartels, gangs and murderers who used them to kill Mexicans and Americans. There are many historic aspects to what Obama did, not the least of which is that he and Eric Holder have yet to be held accountable for their crimes. If you think Watergate was bad, it’s nothing compared to this. The mainstream media silence is deafening – and also historic.

Beheading’s in America: Obama’s open-border policy is a historic success and the beheading’s that have been happening in Mexico are now occurring here on American soil.

Suing States: For the first time in history, this President is not only suing states that are trying to protect Americans from foreign enemies who cross our borders (i.e. states are trying to enforce the laws of our land that Obama refuses to enforce), but Obama has taken it to an unimaginable level. He teamed up with dictators from other countries to jointly fight against US states that are trying to protect the American people.

Voting: Obama’s historic fight against states that are doing what they’ve always done in cleaning up their voter rolls before an election is unprecedented. Removing dead people, felons and illegal’s from voter rolls will not be tolerated by Obama. He’s also fighting states who want voters to show their ID… you know… like showing your ID to his TSA, FBI or at any of his government buildings if you want to enter; showing your ID in stores if you want to buy alcohol, write a check or use a credit card; showing your ID at public schools when you want to buy lunch, at universities or to police when they ask to see it. Obama’s assault on states trying to ensure free and fair elections is an assault on all of us and marks another historic Obama achievement.

Other Noteworthy Obama Achievements

Golf Games: “President Obama is nearing his 100th round of golf — a significant milestone indeed. How many people outside of Florida’s retirement communities have time to play 100 rounds of golf?”

Fundraising: “All told, he has now attended 163 re-election fundraisers for his campaign and the Democratic Party – almost double the number George W. Bush attended in his entire first term (86) and more than any other president in history.”

Lavish Vacations: “The past few years have been a time for sacrifice for many, but not apparently for the Obama’s.”

President’s Work Schedule: Obama’s late-to-rise and partial work days are unprecedented.

There are other areas such as NASA, the NDAA, the war in Libya, the Muslim Brotherhood in our White House, Obama’s role in the Arab Spring, etc. which we’ll explore another time. For now, when we consider just the items delineated in this article, there is no denying that Obama’s Presidency is historic and the impact he has had on our country is undeniable.

Although his campaign slogan is “Forward”, it is clear he is taking us backward. Jobs, economic stability, national security, etc… he has taken us backward by decades, as reflected in home ownership at its lowest since 1965, the labor force at its lowest since 1981, poverty, food stamps and debt at their highest level in history…

If this is the kind of change you are happy with, don’t forget to vote for Obama in November… or don’t vote at all because that will help him win too. But if this is not the kind of change you want, make sure you are registered, get to the polls on voting day and help us make sure that Obama does not get a “historic” second term.

A Better Life for Julia… ;-)

Last week, President Obama’s team introduced the “Life of Julia,” a portrayal of a liberal vision of life for one woman.

clip_image002

Watch the “Life of Julia”  as presented by the Obama Campaign (mind you… Obama remains President throughout Julia’s 67 (short) years life.

If Obama is re-elected in November 2012 Life of Julia:

julia site flag gaffe 2

Then watch the Heritage Foundation version showing how conservative policies, like the ones outlined in Heritage’s Saving the American Dream plan, where Julia and all Americans are empowered without government interference at every stage of life.

Rather than President Obama’s vision of cradle-to-grave government dependence, conservatives want an empowered Julia with personal liberty and economic opportunities.

Conservatives believe people should be in charge of their own lives, not government.

If Romney is elected in November 2012 Heritage’s Saving the American Dream plan:

From the cradle to the grave, Obama says the government should control your life

By: Old Ironsides  - Conscience of a Conservative – Cross-Posted by TMH of the Noisy Room

Well, Obama’s mask is finally beginning to slip off his face. A few days ago the 2012 Obama campaign released its official slogan, FORWARD, and immediately the origins of this favorite action word became known thanks to Obama’s greatest adversary, the conservative bloggers. From now until November the Democrats will be marching FORWARD to victory. Just as their fellow communists have done in the past. Most of those communist posters from past history were not written in English so they’re not as obvious, see the blog written by Hack Wilson, http://www.hackwilson.blogspot.com/ But, even though Obama’s Democrats left out the revolutionary soldier carrying the red flag in their poster, at least one of those communist posters from modern history is in English. And it is most convincing in its true meaning when the Leading Light Communist Organization uses it.

clip_image001

So now the Obama Democrats have taken the next step in convincing everyone of their true purpose, spreading the philosophy of Karl Marx. Only the Obama Democrats are being a bit cautious because they are revealing their plan in little pieces. Such as their new web site propaganda piece “The Life of Julia” wherein the Democrats show their love and compassion for everyone from the cradle to the grave. The part they left out is what they expect from you in return.

clip_image002

No, it isn’t Socialism, it isn’t Communism, it isn’t Marxism, its just our good old Democrat pretender Barack Hussein Obama telling America that life is better when you depend on the government to give you everything you need. Is the word “depend” the right one to use? Maybe the sentence should read: Life is better when you allow the government to control your life, because control is what the Democrats want. Too bad the wisdom of a true American patriot, Thomas Jefferson, has been forgotten by so many Democrats today. Back in the days when our Founding Fathers were creating our Republic, Jefferson argued that A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take away everything you have.” Maybe that’s why so many liberal teachers are rewriting American History today because they don’t want tomorrow’s voters to think about these things.

I know where I’ve heard that Democrat slogan before. It was first written by Karl Marx when he said: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” And Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were the authors of The Communist Manifesto. The Obama Democrats have presented the later part of the Marxist statement, the part that appeals to greed, but they conveniently left off the first part, the part that dictates what the government wants in return. Wikipedia reveals the complete origin, along with the full text in which it appeared.

The complete paragraph containing Marx’s statement of the creed in the ‘Critique of the Gotha Program’ is as follows:

In a higher phase of communist society, after the enslaving subordination of the individual to the division of labor, and therewith also the antithesis between mental and physical labor, has vanished; after labor has become not only a means of life but life’s prime want; after the productive forces have also increased with the all-around development of the individual, and all the springs of co-operative wealth flow more abundantly—only then can the narrow horizon of bourgeois right be crossed in its entirety and society inscribe on its banners: From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs!

Then another search of Wikipedia reveals more on the application of this basic communist philosophy.

“Claiming themselves to be at a “lower stage of communism (i.e., “socialism”, in line with Marx’s terminology), the Soviet Union adapted the formula as: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his work (labor investment)”. ”

Proletarians and Communists
The second section, “Proletarians and Communists”, starts by stating the relationship of conscious communists to the rest of the working class, declaring that they will not form a separate party that opposes other working-class parties, will express the interests and general will of the proletariat as a whole, and will distinguish themselves from other working-class parties by always expressing the common interest of the entire proletariat independently of all nationalities and representing the interests of the movement as a whole.

The section goes on to defend communism from various objections, such as the claim that communists advocate “free love“, and the claim that people will not perform labor in a communist society because they have no incentive to work. The section ends by outlining a set of short-term demands:

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.

3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.

4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.

5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.

6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.

7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.

8. Equal liability of all to labor. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.

9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country.

10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form and combination of education with industrial production.[15]

The implementation of these policies would, as believed by Marx and Engels, be a precursor to the stateless and classless society. In a controversial passage they suggested that the “proletariat” might in competition with the bourgeoisie be compelled to organize as a class, form a revolution, make itself a ruling class, sweep away the old conditions of production, and in that step have abolished its own supremacy as a class. This account of the transition from socialism to communism was criticized particularly during and after the Soviet era.

The Life of Julia – Left-Wing Faulty Politics

Critics… pretty much anyone with a brain, rip the Obama Campaign’s very telling creation, Julia; another campaign stunt that will surely backfire!

The Blaze:

The Obama campaign’s new “Life of Julia” tool has led to no shortage of mocking parodies of the faceless, fictional female guided through life by the president’s programs.

The efficacy of Obama’s policies — and the hardships “Julia” would befall under a Romney administration — are certainly up for debate. One thing that’s not? Whoever created Julia and her world really should have brushed up on their flag etiquette.

From “The Life of Julia,” age 25:julia site flag gaffe 2

Julia’s college graduation podium is flanked by two flags — the U.S.’s and a generic “U.” The American flag is to the would-be speaker’s left, while U’s is on the right. So what’s wrong with that?

From the U.S. Flag Code:

When displayed from a staff in a church or public auditorium, the flag of the United States of America should hold the position of superior prominence, in advance of the audience, and in the position of honor at the clergyman’s or speaker’s right as he faces the audience. Any other flag so displayed should be placed on the left of the clergyman or speaker or to the right of the audience.

Yikes. Pretty embarrassing flub for a national presidential campaign. Good thing it’s only the first one.

The Life of Julia a Pathetic Loser… is anything but Aspirational or Enviable!

Adapted (in italics) from The Life of Julia the Pathetic Loser by Paul Phaneuf (http://ning.it/J2EHot), TPN

Julia’s life begins at the age of 3 (guess her mama skipped the abortion choice) when Julia is enrolled in a Head Start Program where she will learn about Heather’s two mommies, the joys of masturbation, the foolishness of freedom, and the hypocrisy of the American Founding Fathers.

She will learn the identity of the real Messiah, the Kenyan Barry Soteoro, and the American President who single handedly lowered the level of the oceans and saved planet Earth from stupid humans while simultaneously ushering in the New Stone Age for what was once the greatest country in human historyAnd amazingly the morphed Barry, Barack Obama, will be President of the United States her entire life.

At the age of 17, Julia takes the SAT, gleefully cheats on her exam and achieves a perfect score of 800 when she successfully navigates the times table all the way through to the sixes.

She trains for the Race to the Top, a program implemented by President Barry, however Julia finds that her advanced degree in “The History of the Occupation Movement and Its Contribution to the Downfall of American Prosperity” is not in high demand among employers and is disappointed to learn that no one is willing to pay her for useless propaganda.

At the age of 18, after her third abortion, Julia and her family which comprises of Julia, the four children she did not abort, and her life mate Galtilla the Witch, qualify for President Barry’s American Opportunity Tax Credit.

Julia and Galtilla are tickled pink as this gives Julia the chance to earn her doctorate in Secret Mathematical Tables of the Coven, not a religion. Julia has used the money to retain an attorney in anticipation of the discrimination lawsuit she will file if she is not hired by the local diner for $350,000 a year.

At the age of 22, Julia, Galtilla and the four kids are on her parents Medicare insurance and, thank the god Barry, do not have to experience the duress of paying for health care insurance. After navigating the bureaucracy, Julia is elated to get an important surgical procedure approved before she turns 30. Unfortunately, the surgery is performed at the local butcher shop because no one has entered the involuntary servitude of the medical profession since Julia was 3.

Because of the Lilly Ledbottom Fair Play Action Association, Julia is one of millions of women who get to stand up for her right to equal pay, a situation Julia intends to capitalize on as soon as the manager from MacDonald’s returns her calls.

At the age of 25, Julia’s federal loans are more manageable from her hovel in the Bank of China Gulag in the Florida Everglades. She makes her payments on time every month, or else.

By the age of 27, Julia and 120 million other women have worked as web designers for one of Obama’s czars who have been in power for 24 years. Finally Julia and Galtilla are neutered under the Chinese mandate of no more than one child per hovel per gulag.

At the age of 31, Julia decides to have a child with a man whose name she would like to remember, but after numerous attempts, Julia is diagnosed as unable to have children because she has been neutered. Thankfully, she can still collect benefits for prenatal care and, using her newly issued ITIN is compensated for all the children she could have had, including the ones she aborted.

At the age of 37, Julia’s four children are repeating Kindergarten for the seventh time and Julia opts for the Race to the Top degree in Kindergartenology for all of her children. There is great rejoicing when Julia and Galtilla learn that their eleven year old daughter is pregnant.

At the age of 42, Julia wants to start her own web business. The Smaller Business Administration offers her three and a half million dollars not to start the business and Julia uses the money to purchase a tent and a faux fur coat which she shares in the winter with her children and 14 grandchildren in the gulag. Unfortunately, Julia has been evicted from her hovel for violation of the Bank of China’s policies. Galtilla is nowhere to be found.

At the age of 65, Julia enrolls in Medicare and heads right to the butcher so she can grab a number and schedule a checkup by her 72nd birthday, by age 79, should she live that long, there will no treatments available to her.

At the age of 67, Julia retires from her successful career not designing websites in the business the government paid her not to start and she receives monthly benefits without worrying that she’ll run out of savings. Unfortunately Julia is very lonely because she has sold all her children into bondage to pay for bread and rat soup.

President Barry doesn’t spend two seconds thinking about Julia or any other woman from his mansion on the top of Mount Olympus where he has resided with all the other gods for all these years... since the emergence of the NWO, administered by the United Nations .

Julia dies an old broken, ignorant, hungry bondservant in the gulag at the ripe old age of 68… even though the average age of women in the United States is now 80.  Sounds like a death panel encounter to me!

All Hail King Barry.

Let us all remember: "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have." (Thomas Jefferson)

Obama Not Only the Food Stamp President but also the Gun Sale President

Just as more food stamps are issued daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly since President Obama has been in the White House, so has the purchase, storage, interest in and training in the use of guns and ammunition.

Gingrich has a point in painting Obama as an entitlement president… the food stamp president, said Robert Rector, senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation. Spending on income-based programs, such as food stamps, has increased by one-third to $900 billion under Obama. There are 70 such programs.

A record 44.7 million people -- or 1 in 7 Americans -- were on food stamps last year.

The food stamp rolls have swelled more under Obama's tenure than under his recent predecessors. Also, his 2009 Recovery Act allowed even more people to sign up.

The number of people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has soared to an average 44.7 million in fiscal 2011, up 33% from fiscal 2009. Obama's stimulus act made it easier for childless, jobless adults to qualify for the program and increased the monthly benefit by about 15% through 2013.

In fiscal 2011, the federal government spent more than $75 billion on food stamps, which provided an average monthly benefit of $133.85 a month, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That's up from $34.6 billion at the end of fiscal 2008, when recipients collected an average benefit of $102.19.

Much of what's driving the steep climb in enrollment is the nation's worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, when the food stamp program was created.  And that is the problem… Obama has no jobs program, no corporate or true government experience, and therefore there are no jobs so people are desperate and must apply for more and more entitlement programs and causes the need for children to stay on their parent’ medical insurance until age 26… instead of getting out on their own.

American gun market is ‘booming’

Jeff Knox ponders sustained surge of firearm, survivalist sales

You wouldn’t guess that the nation’s economy is in the doldrums by looking at the activity on the floor of the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas this week. This is the week of the annual SHOT Show, when tens of thousands of members of the firearms and outdoor sports industry make a pilgrimage to Las Vegas to attend the industry’s biggest trade event. Sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, or NSSF, SHOT stands for “shooting, hunting and outdoor trade.” It is where manufacturers, importers, dealers, wholesalers and distributors get together to examine wares, make connections and do business – lots of business.

As I’ve been making my way around the acres and acres of the exhibit hall, talking to old friends and meeting new folks, there are two things that are very clear: Business is good, but people are concerned about the future.

It has been suggested that Barack Obama should receive the title of Firearms Salesman of the Year for the past three years, but you find little interest in extending his tenure. Sentiment runs high (and high is an understatement) in favor of Mr. Obama being held to a single term.

Nonetheless, there is much concern about the Republicans’ ability to deliver a candidate who can defeat him. The consensus seems to be almost as opposed to Mitt Romney as they are to Obama. Romney’s enthusiastic support for an “assault weapons” ban when he was Governor of Massachusetts leaves gun owners mistrustful of him. Nor is the idea of a Republican-controlled Congress with Romney in the White House an especially reassuring prospect, since politicians tend to stand with their president.

Several people pointed toward the tragic murders in Tucson when Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was wounded and suggested that had Romney been president at that time, a ban on magazines over 10 rounds would almost certainly have been enacted. Republicans seem to excel at shooting themselves in the foot – particularly when they control both Congress and the White House – and the gun industry has noticed.

Support for Newt Gingrich seems higher, but still far from enthusiastic. Folks I spoke with felt that Gingrich had reneged on promises to work to repeal the Clinton “assault weapons” ban after gun voters had been so instrumental in sweeping Republicans into power in 1994. There is no question that Gingrich is saying all the right things to gun voters during the campaign, but we’ve heard him say the right things before. Even so, it is encouraging that he is making the effort to win over gun voters themselves and not simply kissing the rings of the high priests at the National Rifle Association. He has answered the Gun Owners of America surveys, and responded to queries from grassroots groups.

The most frequent comments I’ve heard about presidential candidates have been laments that Ron Paul couldn’t win the election. Paul is the most principled of the Republican candidates and holds the strongest views in support of the Second Amendment and citizens’ right to arms, but that favorable impression was almost universally dampened by a belief that he is unelectable. There were also concerns expressed about Paul’s positions on other issues, particularly the perception that he is an isolationist.

My perception is that this crowd has three main concerns about Dr. Paul: his electability, the speed with which he suggests he wishes to implement his aggressive agenda and the utter lack of support he would receive from both the Democrats and the Republicans in Washington. So far the Republican establishment continues to treat Paul and his increasingly popular libertarian views (which are much in line with the positions of the tea party) with disdain and dismissal rather than embracing and trying to co-opt those positions.

Listening to the talk here at SHOT, I am becoming more convinced that Paul could actually win the nomination if everyone who prefers him actually came out in support and voted for him rather than hedging their bets by playing the electability game.

With the elections up in the air, it is surprising that this industry continues to be one of the few that is really doing well, and no one seems to be able to explain the sector’s strength. Since late in 2008 when it began looking likely that Obama was going to be the next president, sales of firearms and ammunition have gone through the roof. Some have attributed the boom to fears that Obama was going to institute new firearms regulations and that consumers felt they’d better buy what they could before new laws and regulations made it impossible. That was certainly a part of it, particularly in 2009 when no one knew what to expect from the new, liberal president. But this is 2012, Obama has shown little interest in stirring up the wrath of gun owners, and his time in office could soon be coming to a close. Still, firearms sales for this past December topped all previous records with over 600,000 transactions on Black Friday alone.

At a time when the U.S. economy teeters on the brink of collapse, unemployment remains in double digits and crime is at record lows, it would seem strange that an industry considered to be driven by wants rather than needs is doing so well.

Prices on basic handguns generally start at around $400 and go up from there, with many production guns priced well over $1,000 and specialized or custom guns running up in the $4,000-5,000 range or more. Prices on rifles are similar, with basic bolt actions starting around $400 and prices on the popular AR platform rifles running from around $1,000 to well over $4,000. Shotguns run an even broader spectrum, with some models priced around $200 and top-of-the-line Perazzis listed at close to $100,000.

The point is, this is not an inexpensive hobby, nor is there any single, stand-out factor driving the market. More significant is that the boom is not restricted to just firearms and ammunition, but includes hunting and camping gear, archery equipment, truck accessories, boots, ropes and pocket knives – not to mention the whole law enforcement sector, which is also well represented here at the show.

Personally I see the boom being driven by a combination of factors with fear of restrictions being significant, but not overriding. I think the additional exposure and cultural acceptance of firearms and hunting in recent years – from political threats and posturing, to the Fast & Furious debacle, to TV shows like “Top Shot,” “Sons of Guns” and the ever-growing cable hunting shows.

Another major factor is the number of young people who have been introduced to shooting in exotic locales like Iraq and Afghanistan. We saw a similar surge in interest in the shooting sports at the end of World War II and even after the Civil War, when Northern generals founded a shooting group called the National Rifle Association.

Whatever the reasons, Americans are rediscovering the fun and utility of guns and the shooting sports, and they are putting their hard-earned money into it. If you haven’t tried this fun and useful pastime, I would encourage you to give it a shot. The National Shooting Sports Foundation provides tremendous resources for anyone interested at www.NSSF.org, including places to shoot and a free introductory program called First Shots.

Thomas Jefferson recommended shooting as a worthwhile pastime for developing discipline and building character. It also serves to help keep people safe and our country free – not to mention bolstering the economy. If you already enjoy shooting, share it with a friend. Either way I hope to see you at the range.

Obama’s Student Loan Plan: Implements Limited Forgiveness and Some Other Changes

Yesterday as part of Obama’s campaign sweep on the taxpayer dime he announced his new student loan plan…

Excerpt:

It is also a part of the plan that monthly payments be capped at a level of 10 percent of the money that left over when all taxes are paid and basic necessities taken care of. This cap has been at 15 percent, which takes a lot more money out of the pockets of citizens and out of the economy.

Understanding Obama Student Loan Forgiveness

President Barack Obama will undoubtedly be remembered for his healthcare reform legislation that was recently passed by Congress. However, there is another program that is much less well known that could affect far more people directly. This is the Obama student loan forgiveness program.

Under the terms of this program, anyone who makes his monthly payments for twenty years after leaving college is eligible to have his/her remaining balance forgiven. At least, this applies to anyone with Federal Direct loans, Stafford loans, and Perkins loans. Those who take out their loans from private lenders such as Sallie Mae are still responsible for repaying their loans in total.

Individuals who spend ten years in public service positions become eligible to have their loans forgiven at that point rather than having to wait the full twenty years. This means that their debt is forgiven in half the time and their debt reduced significantly sooner.

It is also a part of the plan that monthly payments be capped at a level of 10 percent of the money that left over when all taxes are paid and basic necessities taken care of. This cap has been at 15 percent, which takes a lot more money out of the pockets of citizens and out of the economy.

There are also programs in place that allow teachers to work for just five years in elementary or high schools that have been designated as low income schools by the Dept. Of Education. This applies to FFEL loans and to Direct loans.

Military personnel are also able to achieve forgiveness for their student loans if they have a degree. This program works for members of all five branches of service, including the Coast Guard and Reserves.

A final option is to apply for income based repayment terms. While it is probably best to sign up for this early in the life of the loan, older loans may still qualify for this lower payment plan. Of course, the clock starts all over when one signs up for this option. That means that someone who has worked in public service for eight years and signs up for income based repayment must work another ten years in public service instead of the two he/she would have had left.

Student loans are a fact of life for the vast majority of college graduates. This is especially true of those who go beyond a bachelor's degree and take graduate level classes. Sadly, the much higher pay they were promised if they pursued their education to its fullest has not materialized. The economic recession has made this fact even worse for most.

The Obama student loan forgiveness program is intended to help ensure that individuals do not wind up broke because they chose to continue their education. While nobody will see his/her loan just disappear overnight, payments have been lowered and the time shortened that one must pay before the remaining balance is forgiven. Public service workers and teachers are eligible for forgiveness at much faster rates due to the nature of their jobs.

Achieving Student Loan Forgiveness Through One’s Career

For those who wish to get their college degree but are not as financially stable to do so, student loans are definitely a great thing to have. However, the large interest rates of such as well as the length of time it takes to pay for them can make them a financial burden in the long run. This has been the trend until student loan forgiveness programs were introduced.

Some people might not know this fact, but it is actually possible to get a student loan forgiven. An effective way to do so is by getting a job that entitles one to avail of the opportunity to get the loans lessened up to a certain degree.

Here are some of the occupations one can take up and expect the possibility of loan forgiveness.

1. Volunteers - Some of the organizations in the community today can offer a student loan forgiveness opportunity for their volunteers. This is available in exchange for a specified length of time in service.

2. Military personnel - Aside from being able to serve the country, a military man also gets to avail of student loan repayment. However, this is limited to the Army and Air Force as well as their corresponding national guards. The Navy also offers this for its members.

3. Doctor or lawyer - Certified practitioners in both the legal and medical fields can choose from a variety of options to get their student loans forgiven as well. Since it takes up to a six-figure amount for them to finish their degree and be able to practice fully, forgiveness loans are definitely a blessing for them.

4. Teacher - Teaching is a profession greatly honored by the government considering how valuable education is. Because of this, complete loan forgiveness is also offered for those who teach in public elementary, middle and high schools.

Student loans that are set on an income-based repayment plan can take up a maximum of 25 years. This seems like a long time. However, someone who pays dutifully every month without missing a beat might be able to lessen the entire term of the loan.

Knowing all these, a student can take time to assess what college degree to take up and career to build. Of course, it is still very important to take note of what one really enjoys doing, but the financial part of the process is also something to think about in order to reach the ultimate state of financial stability.

White House officials said Obama will provide student loan relief in two ways:

First, he will accelerate a measure approved by Congress that reduces the maximum required payment on future student loans from 15 percent of discretionary income annually to 10 percent. The White House wants it to go into effect in 2012, instead of 2014. In addition, the White House says remaining debt would be forgiven after 20 years, instead of 25.

About 1.6 million borrowers could be affected.

Second, he will allow borrowers who have a current loan from the Federal Family Education Loan Program and a direct loan from the government to consolidate them into one loan. The consolidated loan would carry an interest rate of up to a half percentage point less than before. This could affect 5.8 million more borrowers.

Washington Posts Wonkblog: There is a Bush-Era Backstory on Obama’s ‘New’ Student Debt Proposal

The student debt relief proposal President Obama rolled out this morning isn’t exactly new. As I mentioned earlier today, it’s more of an adaptation: It lowers some existing caps on how much student borrowers have to pay back on their loans each year. Those caps are pegged to income, hence the name for the policy: Income-based repayment. Or, in education policy terms, IBR.

The Obama administration didn’t create IBR; instead, it inherited the policy from its predecessor. President George W. Bush signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act in September 2007. The law allowed, among other things, for student borrowers to cap loan payments at 15 percent of income and for loan forgiveness after 25 years of payments. All those changes came into effect in July 2009.

Today’s proposal uses the same structure, but moves the goalposts: the cap for loan repayments gets dropped to 10 percent of income and loan forgiveness gets moved up to after 20 years of payments.

The nonprofit Project on Student Debt for years now has been an IBR advocate. It drafted much of the policy proposal that Bush signed in 2007 and that the Obama administration has now strengthened. I spoke this afternoon with the Project on Student Debt’s president, Lauren Asher, about the history of income-based repayment, what these new changes mean and why the new publicity push matters for student borrows. What follows is a transcript lightly edited for content and length:

Sarah Kliff: Tell me about the history of income-based loan repayment. How did the proposal come to be law?

Lauren Asher: We’ve been working on these issues since 2005. The idea of income-based repayment evolved out of an analysis we did, that looked at payment options for student loans. Students were really getting mixed messages from borrowers: Sometimes you’re encouraged to borrow because it’s a good investment; but on the other hand you’re warned not to borrow too much.

We came up with this proposal, which was a sliding scale that took into consideration how much the borrower is earning. We originally thought of it as regulatory, but then legislators got involved. Our original recommendation said that the loan forgiveness should be at 20 years.

SK: But it got set at 25 years. How did that happen?

LA: The way the law got written, the education secretary had the authority to set it up to 25 years, so that’s where it’s currently set.

SK: What does today’s announcement mean for the program? How much more expansive does it get?

LA: One of the most important things about this announcement is the administration is committing to help more borrowers find out about IBR. There’s an estimated half million enrolled right now, and millions more could benefit from the program.

There really needs to be more public outreach and education. So we’re really thrilled that the department is going to do that. If you talk to people at the Occupy Wall Street protests, or in your everyday life, you find they owe more than they ever have before.

SK: That’s interesting that you mention the publicity around the program as the key change here. How much do you think it matters that the administration is also lowering the caps for loan payments in the IBR program?

LA: We’re especially excited about the commitment to raise awareness about IBR. In a previous life I’ve worked on other policy issues. And when something is a new policy, it can take awhile to penetrate public consciousness. With student debt, there’s no time to waste.

That being said, the changes to payment will make the program even more affordable for current students. IBR is a light at the end of the tunnel, and the tunnel will be shorter and brighter with these changes.

Side Note from Tea Party Nation:

The Occupy movement has many goals. Many of them inconsistent with each other, but that is what happens when you smoke too much marijuana.

One thing mentioned by almost every one of the group is the demand that student loans be forgiven.

Let’s assume for a moment that could be done. What would it mean? While consistency is not one of the strong points of the Occupy movement, this would be the ultimate form of corporate welfare.

From the Frum Forum:

All colleges are corporate entities. (Harvard University is actually the oldest corporation in the United States.) Unlike most other entities treated as charities or considered government agencies, they derive most of their revenue from the sale of services–education and research–to paying customers. Only a handful of institutions, maybe 400 of the country’s 4,000 or so colleges and universities, have endowments large enough that they don’t have to watch the “bottom line” for every single project they undertake. Even some colleges with big endowments–Johns Hopkins comes to mind–are fixated on growing revenue and surplus (profit). Explicitly for-profit colleges are just a little more honest about their status as businesses.

If all student loans were to be forgiven, they would almost certainly have to be forgiven for those currently enrolled. Forgiveness, furthermore, would create a precedent that tuition for all colleges would be essentially free going forward. This would amount to an open-ended subsidy that would benefit many of America’s largest corporations (the universities themselves) forever.

Tuition costs would almost certainly rise significantly in any case as the individuals consuming education services (few of whom pay “sticker price” right now) would have no reason to even look at the costs assessed.

Interestingly a Rassmussen poll finds that 66% of Americans oppose student loan forgiveness.

To forgive the estimated $1 trillion in student loans would mean the government would have to give banks $1 trillion dollars to cover that loss.

Where would that money come from? The taxpayers, of course. We have a national debt set to hit $16 trillion soon. What are we going to do, borrow another trillion from China?

Forgiving the student loans also sends several terrible messages. First it teaches people that fiscal discipline does not matter. The student who borrowed $100,000 to land a $20,000 social work job and who spent half that money partying and going on spring break to Cancun, is treated the same as the engineering student who worked his way through school with no student loans and sacrificed to get his or her education.

The fiscal cost alone should sink this really bad idea. What make much more sense, as I have indicated in previous blogs on Tea Party Nation is to change the bankruptcy code and make student loans dischargeable under Chapter 13 bankruptcy. The obligor would still have to pay for a number of years and would pay some of the loan back so the taxpayer is not on the hook for the entire loan amount. This is not a perfect solution but it would allow the person who owes student loans the opportunity to begin moving forward without the crushing debt load on their backs. It would also mean they pay for part of the debt they incurred.

The size of student loan debt forgiveness will probably kill the idea. But look for Obama and the Party of Treason to suggest it as part of a desperate reelection bid.

Social Degeneration - Parts 1 & 2

Someone at long last has had the courage to tell the plain, honest truth about race.

After mobs of young blacks rampaged through Philadelphia committing violence -- as similar mobs have rampaged through Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee and other places -- Philadelphia's black mayor, Michael A. Nutter, ordered a police crackdown and lashed out at the whole lifestyle of those who did such things.

"Pull up your pants and buy a belt 'cause no one wants to see your underwear or the crack of your butt," he said. "If you walk into somebody's office with your hair uncombed and a pick in the back, and your shoes untied, and your pants half down, tattoos up and down your arms and on your neck, and you wonder why somebody won't hire you? They don't hire you 'cause you look like you're crazy," the mayor said. He added: "You have damaged your own race."

While this might seem like it is just plain common sense, what Mayor Nutter said undermines a whole vision of the world that has brought fame, fortune and power to race hustlers in politics, the media and academia. Any racial disparities in hiring can only be due to racism and discrimination, according to the prevailing vision, which reaches from street corner demagogues to the august chambers of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Just to identify the rioters and looters as black is a radical departure, when mayors, police chiefs and the media in other cities report on these outbreaks of violence without mentioning the race of those who are doing these things. The Chicago Tribune even made excuses for failing to mention race when reporting on violent attacks by blacks on whites in Chicago.

Such excuses might make sense if the same politicians and media talking heads were not constantly mentioning race when denouncing the fact that a disproportionate number of young black men are being sent to prison.

The prevailing social dogma is that disparities in outcomes between races can only be due to disparities in how these races are treated. In other words, there cannot possibly be any differences in behavior.

But if black and white Americans had exactly the same behavior patterns, they would be the only two groups on this planet that are the same.

The Chinese minority in Malaysia has long been more successful and more prosperous than the Malay majority, just as the Indians in Fiji have long been more successful and more prosperous than the indigenous Fijians. At various places and times throughout history, the same could be said of the Armenians in Turkey, the Lebanese in Sierra Leone, the Parsees in India, the Japanese in Brazil, and numerous others

There are similar disparities within particular racial or ethnic groups. Even this late in history, I have had northern Italians explain to me why they are not like southern Italians. In Australia, Jewish leaders in both Sydney and Melbourne went to great lengths to tell me why and how the Jews are different in these two cities.

In the United States, despite the higher poverty level among blacks than among whites, the poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994. The disparities within the black community are huge, both in behavior and in outcomes.

Nevertheless, the dogma persists that differences between groups can only be due to the way others treat them or to differences in the way others perceive them in "stereotypes."

All around the country, people in politics and the media have been tip-toeing around the fact that violent attacks by blacks on whites in public places are racially motivated, even when the attackers themselves use anti-white invective and mock the victims they leave lying on the streets bleeding.

This is not something to ignore or excuse. It is something to be stopped. Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia seems to be the first to openly recognize this.

This needs to be done for the sake of both black and white Americans -- and even for the sake of the hoodlums. They have set out on a path that leads only downward for themselves.

Although much of the media have their antennae out to pick up anything that might be construed as racism against blacks, they resolutely ignore even the most blatant racism by blacks against others.

That includes a pattern of violent attacks on whites in public places in Chicago, Denver, New York, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Kansas City, as well as blacks in schools beating up Asian classmates -- for years -- in New York and Philadelphia.

These attacks have been accompanied by explicitly racist statements by the attackers, so it is not a question of having to figure out what the motivation is. There has also been rioting and looting by these young hoodlums.

Yet blacks have no monopoly on these ugly and malicious episodes. Remarkably similar things are being done by lower-class whites in England. Anybody reading "Life at the Bottom" by Theodore Dalrymple will recognize the same barbaric and self-destructive patterns among people with the same attitudes, even though their skin color is different.

Anyone reading today's headline stories about young hoodlums turning the streets of London into scenes of shattered and burning chaos, complete with violence, will discover the down side of the brotherhood of man.

While the history and the races are different, what is the same in both countries are the social policies and social attitudes long promoted by the intelligentsia and welfare state politicians.

A recent study in England found 352,000 households in which nobody had ever worked. Moreover, two-thirds of the adults in those households said that they didn't want to work. As in America, such people feel both "entitled" and aggrieved.

In both countries, those who have achieved less have been taught by the educational system, by the media and by politicians on the left that they have a grievance against those who have achieved more. As in the United States, they feel a fierce sense of resentment against strangers who have done nothing to them, and lash out violently against those strangers.

During the riots, looting and violence in England, a young woman was quoted as saying that this showed "the rich" and the police that "we can do whatever we want." Among the things done during these riots was forcing apparently prosperous looking people to strip naked in the streets.

The need to bring people down in humiliation that marked the mass violence against the Armenians in Turkey nearly a century ago, and that later marked the Nazi persecutions of the Jews in Germany, is still alive and well in people who resent those who have achieved more than they have.

A milder but revealing episode in England some time back involved burglars who were not content to simply steal things but also vented their hostility by scrawling on the wall: "RICH BASTARDS."

In the United States, young black thugs attacked whites with baseball bats and took their belongings in Denver, while voicing their hatred of whites. But it is all a very similar attitude to what has been found in other countries and other times.

Today's politically correct intelligentsia will tell you that the reason for this alienation and lashing out is that there are great disparities and inequities that need to be addressed.

But such barbarism was not nearly as widespread two generations ago, in the middle of the 20th century. Were there no disparities or inequities then? Actually there were more.

What is different today is that there has been -- for decades -- a steady drumbeat of media and political hype about differences in income, education and other outcomes, blaming these differences on oppression against those with fewer achievements or lesser prosperity.

Moreover, there has been a growing tolerance of lawlessness and a growing intolerance toward the idea that people who are lagging need to take steps to raise themselves up, instead of trying to pull others down.

All this exalts those who talk such lofty talk. But others pay the price -- and ultimately that includes even those who take the road toward barbarism.

Please come back for the conclusion…

Rights, Responsibilities and Healthcare

Want to know what troubles our American health care system?

Consider the thoughts of psychiatrist and Nazi death camp survivor Viktor Frankl.

After spending time in our country as a visiting professor, he saw the looming dangers of freedom without responsibility. He observed: "Freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast."

We as Americans accept that health care is an individual right, even if someone else is paying for it. The truth that every personal right must have an accompanying personal responsibility is now lost in our self-absorbed materialistic culture. We have only rights, entitlements if you will.

Few have any idea what the costs are of the health care they receive. Many get it tax subsidized through their employer, many get it through Medicare in a now bankrupt Ponzi scheme in which those working pay taxes to pay for care of those retired, and more than sixty million Americans do not pay at all through Medicaid and SCHIP programs.

Hundreds of millions receive health care the costs of which have little or nothing to do with their own personal realities and then we wonder why those costs are out of control.

Now Ted Kennedy has introduced his solution to all of this, which also captures the thinking of our president. Set up a new government health care plan, subsidized of course by taxes, and call this choice because you are not forced to take it (although you are forced to pay taxes for it).

As Senator Kennedy announces more free health care -- meaning one group of Americans will get what another group of Americans will pay for -- the disconnect between who gets health care services and who pays for them will grow even greater.

Costs will be controlled, according to Senator Kennedy, by setting up a new army of bureaucrats who will get rid of proverbial "fraud and abuse," will decide for doctors how to treat their patients, and will decide for us how we should behave by dictating the preventative measures we must take for our own good.

To put on a show for what this all might look like, a few weeks ago President Obama "invited" representatives from the major sectors of the health care business -- doctors, insurers, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, medical device manufacturers -- to the White House to tell us all how much they would commit to lowering costs.

The result was a supposed commitment by these groups to cut costs by 1.5 percent per year.

Aside from the fact that shortly after the White House announcement, industry representatives began issuing statements denying that they made any such commitment, let's assume it's accurate. That these groups do not know how to run their own businesses and that they can deliver the same products and services annually for 1.5 percent less if the president threatens them.

At our annual health care bill of about $2.5 trillion dollars, savings of 1.5 percent would be about $40 billion.

Let's consider how much of our $2.5 trillion health care bill are costs resulting from behavior that individuals choose.

Googling around and totaling up, I come up with about $240 billion, about ten percent of our total health care bill. This is roughly the total reported health care costs associated with obesity, drug and alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and sedentary life styles.

Worth noting is that these occur disproportionately in low income groups who get their health care free. More than half our spending on HIV/AIDS, for example, is out of Medicaid. Can it be accidental that the huge health care costs related to lifestyle issues are most pronounced where individuals do not personally bear the costs of how they behave?

How can our health care problems be solved by more entitlements and bureaucrats when this is what is causing the problem to begin with?

Viktor Frankl had it right. At the heart of the solution for our health care crisis is personal responsibility. This means more freedom and more markets.
