History of Veterans Day

Veteran’s Affairs: World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and

Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and

Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible."

On that same day, President Eisenhower sent a letter to the Honorable Harvey V. Higley, Administrator of Veterans' Affairs (VA), designating him as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee.

In 1958, the White House advised VA's General Counsel that the 1954 designation of the VA Administrator as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee applied to all subsequent VA Administrators. Since March 1989 when VA was elevated to a cabinet level department, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has served as the committee's chairman.

The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates.

The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans service organizations and the American people.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

McCain – A Treasonous Enemy Within

Last Friday, a man in Prescott, AZ said what all of us have been thinking and saying — John McCain has morphed into a treasonous lapdog for Barack Obama and is licking the fascist boots of al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood who comprise the barbaric Rebels in the Syrian conflict.

“We the people want you to be representative of the people and for this great nation, but for far too long now on the rest of Congress, including the executive branch of government, along with the judicial and legislative have turned your back on the American people and their core values and principles. I can say with great confidence and speak on behalf of all Americans that your actions against this country are treasonous. All of you — against the will of the American people — have aided and abetted the enemy,” said the town hall attendee.

“You and the rest of Congress, including the president of the United States have went against the will your people in Syria regardless of your position and vote, whether it is a yes or no is still a political smokescreen,” the town hall attendee said to an irritated McCain. “I believe wholeheartedly you do not care about the will and well-being of America or its people. You lied the American people about the chemical attacks in Syria. The American people know that it was our government that is most likely responsible. There is strong evidence, including video, that these attacks were carried out by al Qaeda and you advocate starting a war, even maybe World War, by taking the same attack and blaming it on Assad.”

“You swore an oath to protect us from all enemies, both foreign and domestic,” he said. “The simple irony is that the domestic enemy, now in this country, is the people in government, the Untied States. And McCain, you and the rest of the leaders are accountable for their actions. It is too bad that someone like me is not in office to hold you accountable. Because if I was in a position of power or authority, I would have you all arrested and tried for treason against my country.”

“If you and the rest of this government are truly for the American people and representatives of us, I suggest this time you listen because nobody wants another war or strike in Syria or anywhere else,” he said.

“I am truly disgusted that you people are my leaders,” the man concluded. He was met with a mix of boos and cheers.

An arrogant McCain attempts to dress down this brave man by touting his tenure in AZ and says Americans approve of his performance. No we do not you asshat. You need to go as do all the other progressives in the House and Senate. For the life of me, I do not know why you have stayed in office in Arizona. A large part of my family lives there and I have lived there too. McCain is roundly despised in Arizona. All I can fathom is he is the lesser of offered evils and the progressive political Republican machine on the right is well organized there. The Tea Party needs to boot his sorry butt to the curb. McCain has been under the covers with Obama and the Left for far too long and that he would send our proud military — our sons and daughters, wives and husbands — to be mercenaries for radical Islam is a disgrace.

This Is About Destroying Sovereignty’: Beck Examines Potential Syria Strike Through the Eyes of a ‘Radical Leftist’

Many have been alarmed by the rapid escalation in Syria this week after years of horrific violence. With the reported use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime, U.S. officials say America could begin missile strikes within the week.

But why now? What exactly do we hope to achieve?

Glenn Beck tackled the issue on his television program Wednesday evening, arguing that the focus of the administration may not be on the war itself — but on the subsequent layout of the world.

“This administration knows that we are on the brink of World War III. The global economy is fragile, global stability is weak, the west is on the edge, it’s only a matter of time before it crumbles,” he said. “Iran will eventually lose any remaining restraint and go after Israel, Syria starts spilling across the border… When it all falls apart and the west is so weakened, who puts it all back together again?”

“War is — after a long period of just running things into the ground — war makes the people of the world forget what the world was like before the war,” Beck continued. “Beyond that, history shows us that war also changes all the players. It changes borders, it changes everything…”

He speculated that after a period of violence, we will “gather at the U.N. because we have to stop an international crisis, and everything is teetering on the edge, and people will cry out, ‘stop the madness!’ And so we do, the international way.”

If we’re not listening to China now, Beck said he guarantees we’ll listen to them at the bargaining table, and we’ll concede. If they say, for instance, we’ll forgive your debts if you just sign the U.N. Arms Treaty, we will.

“This is about destroying sovereignty,” Beck asserted. “The United Nations will, in the end, broker the deal, making them the new superpower and making us just one of the guys. That’s what everybody wants, for the United States just to be average, just like everybody else…”

Considering alternate explanations, Beck said he can think of “a million reasons” why we shouldn’t intervene, “and not one why we should.”

Intervention, he said, will further destabilize Syria, further destabilize the region, and will likely impact our gas prices and the stock market.

If we are intervening purely for humanitarian purposes, why didn’t we intervene sooner? Why don’t we intervene in other cases of mass slaughter? And if the tipping point is truly chemical weapons, Beck asked if you trust the intelligence community more or less than the last time they claimed there were weapons of mass destruction?

Remember the guy who cut his enemy’s heart out and ate it, Beck added? “We’re on his side now.”

The list goes on, Beck said, including the financial cost of the endeavor and the possibility of dragging us into another war we don’t have the energy or resources for.

“Syria is not about teaching Assad a lesson. Two days of bombing probably won’t even seem out of place in Syria today, unfortunately,” he concluded. “Syria is not a response to the shock and horror of murder — hundreds of thousands have died… Syria is this — it is a sick opportunity for the globalist progressive revolutionaries in our own administration and all around the globe to remold the world closer to their heart’s desire.”

Two Minds on Syria

The New Yorker: So it looks like we’re going to bomb Assad.

Good.

Really? Why good?

Did you see the videos of those kids? I heard that ten thousand people were gassed. Hundreds of them died. This time, we have to do something.

Yes, I saw the videos.

And you don’t want to pound the shit out of him?

I want to pound the shit out of him.

But you think we shouldn’t do anything.

I didn’t say that. But I want you to explain what we’re going to achieve by bombing.

We’re going to let Assad know that chemical weapons are over the line. There’s a reason they’ve been illegal since Verdun or whenever.

Except when Saddam used them against the Kurds—we knew, and we didn’t say a word.

Is that a reason to let Assad use them against his people?

At this point, I don’t think Assad is too worried about the Geneva Conventions.

He should have to think hard before using them again.

He’s a bloody dictator fighting for survival. He’s going to do whatever he has to do.

Not if we really hurt him. Not if we pound his communications centers, his air-force bases, key government installations. He’ll be more likely to survive if he doesn’t use chemical weapons.

Killing civilians while we’re at it.

These would be very specific targets.

The wrong people always get killed.

Maybe. Probably. But if you were a Syrian being bombed by Assad every day, trying to keep your head down and your family alive, wouldn’t you want the world to respond, even if a few more people die? I think so.

Easy for you to say.

Hey, can we not personalize this?

Weren’t you just saying that I don’t care about dying children? (Pause.) So you want us to get involved in their civil war.

I’m not saying that.

But that’s what we’ll be doing. Intervening on the rebel side, tipping the balance in their favor.

Not necessarily. We’ll be drawing a line that says dictators don’t get to use W.M.D.s without consequences.

You can’t bomb targets on one side of a civil war without helping the other side.

It would be very temporary. We’d send Assad a clear message, and then we’d step back and let them go on fighting. We’re not getting involved any deeper than that, because I know what you’re going to say—

The rebels are a bunch of infighting, disorganized, jihadist thugs, and we can’t trust any of them.

I’m not saying we should.

And what do we do if Assad retaliates against Israel or Turkey? Or if he uses nerve gas somewhere else?

We hit him again.

And it escalates.

Not if we restrict it to cruise missiles and air strikes.

Now you’re scaring me. Have you forgotten Iraq?

Not for a single minute.

My point is that you can’t restrict it. You can’t use force for limited goals. You need to know what you’ll do after his next move, and the move after that.

It only escalates if we allow ourselves to get dragged in deeper. Kosovo didn’t escalate.

This isn’t Kosovo. The Syrian rebels aren’t the K.L.A. Assad isn’t Milosevic. Putin isn’t Yeltsin. This is far worse. Kosovo became a U.N. protectorate. That’s not going to happen in Syria.

You think Putin is going to risk a military confrontation with the U.S. and Europe?

I think Russia isn’t going to let Assad go down. Neither is Iran or Hezbollah. So they’ll escalate. This could be the thing that triggers an Israel-Iran war, and how do we stay out of that? My God, it feels like August, 1914.

That was a hundred years ago. Stop with the historical analogies.

You’re the one who brought up Verdun. And Kosovo.

I brought up Kosovo because you brought up Iraq. That’s the problem with these arguments. Iraq! Vietnam! Valley Forge! Agincourt! People resort to analogies so they don’t have to think about the matter at hand.

And because they don’t know anything about the matter at hand.

I know what I saw in those videos.

Thank God Obama doesn’t make foreign policy that way. He knows what he doesn’t know about Syria. He’s always thinking a few steps ahead. He’s not going to get steamrolled by John McCain and Anderson Cooper.

At a certain point, caution is another word for indecisiveness. Obama looks weak! Or worse—indifferent. Anyway, he should have thought ahead when he called chemical weapons a “red line.” He set that trap a year ago, and now we’re in it.

Why does it have to be a trap?

Because our credibility is on the line.

Thank you, Dr. Kissinger.

See, that’s another thing people do in these arguments.

What?

“You sound like so-and-so.” It shouldn’t matter who else is on your side. I mean, you’re in bed with Rand Paul. Anyway, credibility matters even if Kissinger said so. You have to do what you say you’re going to do, especially with bullies.

I don’t think Obama committed himself to any one course of action. But if he does bomb them, we’re involved in that war, and I sure hope his advisers have thought through all the potential consequences better than you have.

Inaction has consequences, too. Assad gases more people, the death toll hits two hundred thousand, the weapons get into Hezbollah’s hands, Iran moves ahead with its nuclear program, the Syrian rebels disintegrate and turn to international terrorism, the whole region goes up in sectarian flames.

And how does firing cruise missiles at Damascus prevent any of this?

It doesn’t. But, look, all of this is already happening with us sitting it out. If we put a gun to Assad’s head, we might be able to have more influence over the outcome. At least we can prevent him from winning.

A violent stalemate. How wonderful for the Syrians. Some people think that’s the best solution for us.

I’m not saying that.

What are you saying?

I don’t know. I had it worked out in my head until we started talking. (Pause.) But we need to do something this time.

Not just to do something.

All right. Not just to do something. But could you do me a favor?

What’s that?

While you’re doing nothing, could you please be unhappy about it?

I am.

Ah, yes...President Obama is steaming mad since the Brits and French backed out of his little Syrian adventure, and he saying he's fully prepared to go it alone.

He even sent another American ship towards Syria, a destroyer escort.The Russians already have a fleet of warships headed that way.

Remember what our Dear Leader and his minions said in 2007 and 2008 about 'Cowboy' Bush? Remember the horse manure about "meeting the global Test" and the Magic Wisdom of the International Community?

So what happened?  There is very little support by Americans to enter the Syrian Civil War… In a new HuffPo poll, conducted after U.S. officials claimed Syria's government killed thousands of civilians with chemical weapons, shows 25 percent of Americans now support air strikes to aid rebels in Syria, while 41 percent said they are opposed. Another 34 percent said that they're not sure.  Germany I also a thumbs down along with Britain and France.

The only logical conclusion is that the truth about the scandals Obama is attempting to divert attention from, by getting involved in Syria, are probably a lot worse than any of us thought.  Time for more investigation!!

A Shiny New War: At Home and Abroad

Knowing that we would wind up here does not take a crystal ball. Many have predicted just this scenario, including myself. War is the ultimate solution of leaders who find themselves in a variety of rock and hard place situations. And Barack Obama has stuffed America in the hardest place of all, sealed us in with nuclear weapons and has lit a very short fuse.

Let’s start with the coming race war that the progressives at home are stoking for all they are worth. You saw the ginned up fiasco of the Zimmerman case where Obama claimed that Trayvon Martin could have been his son and then claimed he actually could have been Trayvon Martin — thereby personalizing the racial conflict out of a non-existent racial confrontation. Then we had the Australian, Chris Lane, being shot in the back while jogging last week by three teenagers – 2 black, one mixed. We had a WWII vet named Shorty (88 years-old) beaten to death with flashlights by 2 young black men in Spokane, Washington. Someone was set on fire in a parking lot in Memphis, Tennessee. A young white boy was savagely beaten on a school bus by several black kids and the list goes on and on. This doesn’t begin to list what has been happening for a while now with black on white crime. All of this can be laid directly at the feet of Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and a whole raft of race baiters who have an agenda that envisions race riots in the streets and a new order being born in America.

An employee named Ayo Kimathi, who is the Acquisitions Officer at ICE for the Department of Homeland Security, has a hate-filled, racially motivated site named War on the Horizon that talks about the coming race war. His handle is ‘Irritated Genie.’ The site had to be approved by DHS and the employee has been with the government agency since 2009. He is now on paid leave, which means nothing. It means at some point they will quietly bring this evil race monger back like nothing ever happened. The best part is that this person is the one who ordered ammo and guns for the DHS.

According to reports, this guy is unstable and everyone in the office is afraid of him. He calls President Obama a “treasonous mulatto scum dweller” and rants about whites and their ”effeminization of the black male.”

“The 21st century will either mark the return of Black resistance to white domination or global white-on-Black genocide leading to our complete extinction,” the website declares. “Warfare is eminent, and in order for Black people to survive the 21st century, we are going to have to kill a lot of whites – more than our christian hearts can possibly count.”

On its main page, War on the Horizon says preparing for racial warfare includes “intellectual, spiritual, psychological, and physical preparation for a global clash that will mean the end of white rule on this planet or the end of the Black Race as we know it. ”

Under the June 2010 article “Goodbye Uncle Tom,” the website lists Rev. Al Sharpton, a “sadistic political white-sex offender…who advocates ‘homosexuality’ among Black people”; Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and former Secretary of State Colin (spelled “Colon”) Powell who will “indirectly assist in the genocide of Black people; Oprah Winfrey, a “wealthy lesbian mammy” who does “everything in her power to assist whites in destroying strong Black manhood; as well as “all rappers,” “all political homos” and “all promoters and supporters of interracial dating/marriage/sex.”

“We must become militant, hostile, violent, and deadly to those individuals and groups in our community who don’t comply to Black decency and Race First standards. We cannot continue to be Black people with white behavior. – Black Afrikans Only!” the website states. “…Once we have largely purged our Race of its Race traitors, war with our natural enemy, the white Race, will intensify and become the single most powerful motivating force in the lives of Afrikan people worldwide.”

Why would you knowingly have someone like this in a government agency with the responsibility and power this guy had? He has been with them four years and the site was approved — so regardless of what they claim, they knew of his inclinations. I would put forth that this is just the kind of individual they want around — one who is extreme and wants violence. One who hates America in general. The fact that he hates most African Americans as well is just a minor annoyance or a contrivance. This is what we have controlling our country now. We have radical Islamists, black power racists, progressives, Marxists, communists and every imaginable corrupt, evil recruit they can find. America has gone to the dark side and we are fighting in the shade. War is coming to America’s streets and neighborhoods and our leaders are the delivery boys.

On to the war abroad…

By now everyone has heard of the supposed chemical attack by Assad in Syria on his own people. I have seen reports of up to 355 dead with 3600 sickened — many being women and children. If true, that is horrific. But there is serious doubt about it being true. The last reported chemical attack turned out to be false and numerous experts claim this one is too.

I have no love of Assad — he’s an evil man, heading an evil regime. But the rebels are composed of al Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood and are every bit as evil. Much the same can be said of our current government as well. They want this war; it creates worldwide chaos that they desperately need to reset a looted and plundered monetary system and to reform governments closer to their heart’s desire. I’m not the only one who sees this either. From Michael Rivero:

1. Why would Syria’s Assad invite United Nations chemical weapons inspectors to Syria, then launch a chemical weapons attack against women and children on the very day they arrive, just miles from where they are staying?

2. If Assad were going to use chemical weapons, wouldn’t he use them against the hired mercenary army trying to oust him? What does he gain attacking women and children? Nothing! The gain is all on the side of the US Government desperate to get the war agenda going again.

As I type these words, US trained and equipped forces are already across the border into Syria, and US naval forces are sailing into position to launch a massive cruise missile attack into Syria that will surely kill more Syrians than were claimed to have died in the chemical attack.

And he is right. I would suggest there is a strong possibility here of a set-up and an agenda for a much needed war. I would not put it past Assad to use chemical weapons, but it looks too pat and doesn’t make sense. I have seen on the web many, many pictures of dead children from the chemical attacks playing on the sympathies of the world. This is an old, tried and true technique of garnering sympathy in order to do unspeakable things.

Just to be clear, these are the rebels we are backing — from The Blaze (warning: graphic video):

Make no mistake, employing the Doctrine of Responsibility to Protect, we are readying for an attack on Syria. Samantha Power, who missed the last UN meeting, was resting up for the conflict ahead. We are moving our warships closer to Syria in preparation for missile attacks when Obama gives his blessing.

Iran and Syria are warning that if we attack Syria, it will set the whole Middle East on fire. I fear that is true. Should we attack Syria, by proxy, we will be attacking Iran and Russia. Qatar and Saudi Arabia will back the US, but only so far and for so long. Hello all-out World War III. China will either wait to pick up the pieces or back Russia. Obama has gutted and severely weakened our military — a full-scale war will cause a further financial collapse in the US and the odds of us prevailing are very poor. Americans overwhelmingly oppose attacking Syria, not that it matters to our Islamist-in-Chief.

Now Britain and France are beating the war drums along with the US. They believe intervening in the Middle East and setting it on fire will cure the world’s economic woes. They have severely underestimated the Jihadists and the plans that Russia has set in motion. Russia must be over the moon with this because it gives them leeway to further their capture of the Middle Eastern territories for land, power, wealth and resources. And as an added bennie, they think they may rid themselves of the Jews and America. Maybe America, never the Jews. Russia is rising in the Middle East and making alliances in the void of leadership America is leaving behind. Already they have wooed Egypt — China is doing the same thing across the planet. Obama wants this — he can destroy America while credibly denying and blaming others. It’s the progressive way.

This all has the feel of the amateur video used as an excuse for Benghazi — it doesn’t pass the smell test. It’s the same players and the same board. Do you think our leaders really give a crap about 355 people supposedly dead in Syria? Come on! Thousands have died. It is way too convenient an excuse to go to war. So, while we point the finger at Assad and ready for war, Americans are besieged from every side with chaos and evil at home, so much so they don’t know what to do or what to think. Just the way Obama wants it.

If this war unfolds (as it will almost assuredly do), tighten your belts. Forget $10 a gallon gas, you’ll be lucky to get gas. And food? I hope you have some. Please prepare now. Things are about to get very interesting in a bad way. Israel has their finger on the ‘trigger’ and they won’t hesitate to defend themselves. We better get ready to defend ourselves as well. A pale horse brings war at home and abroad.

Forum: The 10th Anniversary of the Iraq War just passed. Was the Iraq Invasion Worthwhile?

Forum: Every week on Monday morning , the Council and our invited guests weigh in at the Watcher’s Forum, short takes on a major issue of the day. This week’s question:The 10th Anniversary of the Iraq War just passed. Was the Iraq Invasion Worthwhile?

The Razor:I’ll admit I was wrong about the Iraq war. I took the politically correct view that Arabs weren’t savages and was proven wrong.

That’s overly simplistic. I was wrong about Iraq because we weren’t willing to do two things we did in Germany and Japan after World War 2.

1. We treated the regimes we replaced as losers.

2. We discredited the cultures that lead to militarism. Neither Germany nor Japan had strong democratic roots, so instead we imposed superior cultures on them, particularly the British parliamentary system.

In Iraq we were doomed because of the politically correct view that all cultures are equal. Ditto Afghanistan. Sorry, but Arab states are based on corruption, violence and kleptocracy, and by refusing to impose a superior culture on them we allowed their culture to flourish.

In fact I would argue that at this time we cannot accomplish any nation building anywhere under our cultural relativist beliefs.

The Colossus of Rhodey:Well, let’s see: was Iraq under Saddam Hussein really that much of a threat? Sure, as long as he remained in power he could be a nuisance and a potential menace, but to what degree? The coalition from the first Iraq War had Iraq “boxed in,” so to speak, primarily via the “no-fly zone.” And, yes, Saddam had defied the UN upwards of over fifteen times since the Gulf War’s end in 1991. The US tried to make its case to the UN for military action against Saddam in ’02 and ’03, but Kofi and the gang wouldn’t go for it. So as a result, why does this mean that WE — the US — must do it alone? Why must US forces risk their lives because the weak-kneed, yellow-bellied and milksop UN refuses to act to enforce its own sanctions and edicts?

And this brings me to my primary reason why I am against the Iraq War: Removing a dictator and instituting democracy to a country that’s never had it is NOT — NOT — a job for the US military. Not a single US soldier’s life is worth it. It’s “nation-building,” after all. Aren’t conservatives supposed to be against ”nation-building”? Representative Ron Paul makes a good case conservatives should consider here. Furthermore, James L. Payne demonstrates that “nation-building” has been effective only 27% of the time since 1850, and he argues that these sucesses were not the products of military intervention. In addition, he notes:

One group of countries that seem especially resistant to democracy-building efforts are the Arab lands. There have been are nine interventions in Arab countries in the past century. In no case did stable democracy follow the military occupation.

George W. Bush himself declared that “We’re not into nation building. We’re focused on justice”shortly after the 9/11 attacks. And Claudia Rosett in the conservative Wall Street Journal opinion pages said about W’s claim (my emphasis):

That’s a crucial distinction. Nation building entails America trying to construct an entire way of life for others. And though building a free and democratic world would be a wondrous thing, experience suggests that for any nation it is a vastly complex project that must come mainly from within. America can serve as an example and an ally. But we cannot reliably reengineer other societies, and we risk enormous resentment when we try. No amount of social or political engineering can produce a paradise in which evil urges will never intrude, and though a more widely free and benign world order would produce fewer monsters, we can hardly arrange that within the week. But if we cannot quickly fix all creation, we can at least minimize the opportunities and maximize the penalties for evil actions–something we have not done for a decade now.

Of course, not too soon after, President Bush did a 180 on his above claim regarding Iraq. And, predictably, many — most? — conservatives fell in line behind him. This is understandable, certainly — the need to put up a “united front” — but it’s very intellectually and philosophically dishonest for conservatives. After all, didn’t conservatives flame Bill Clinton for his efforts in Haiti? Somalia? Kosovo? They sure did.

At least I believe I’m consistent. I’m against all instances of “nation-building,” whether they be attempted under a liberal administration or a conservative one. The only exceptions would be examples such as Japan and Germany which were utterly destroyed after total war and, frankly, needed a major degree of “nation-[re]building.”

US soldiers are there to FIGHT, not to police foreign lands or to engage in “building” democracy. Removing Saddam was a good thing, yes, but consider the long-term consequences.

Bookworm Room:I’m reading Paul Fussell’s marvelous The Great War and Modern Memory. It is a reminder of deadly wars, fought for stupid reasons, with disastrous consequences. Iraq wasn’t the first and it won’t be the last.

Rhymes With Right: As I noted over at my blog, I certainly understand those who look upon our nation’s military action in Iraq to have been a disaster. We discovered that our leaders had for at least a decade believed things that were untrue because our nation’s intelligence services had supplied wrong information. We watched as a quick victory became a much tougher slog due to a rising insurgency. And there was the financial toll on our country that weakened our government and our economy. One can make the case that the Iraq war “was not worth it”.

But while our media an opinion leaders are willing to look upon the question from a very American – and very political – perspective, what we don’t often hear is the answer to that question from Iraqis.
Take this response from one of Saddam Hussein’s many victims – Kurdish activist Barham Salih, who suffered in the torture chambers of the Iraqi dictator, who notes that:

“From the perspective of the Kurdish people — and I dare say the majority of the Iraqi people — it was worth it,” he said. “War is never a good option, but given our history and the brutality of Saddam’s regime, it may have been the only other option to end the genocidal campaign waged by Saddam against the Kurds and other communities in Iraq.”

So no, Iraq certainly is not the stable democracy and steadfast ally that we hoped for a decade ago. Acts of terrorism still take place there on a regular basis. But there are no government torture chambers in operation. There is a democracy of a sort, and opportunities for Iraqis that did not exist in 2003. So while maybe the most imperialist view of what “worth it” (ironically adopted by the Left who opposed the war from practically the beginning), the war ended up improving the human rights situation of millions of Iraqis. And if that doesn’t make the war “worth it” from an American point of view, doesn’t it at least constitute an improvement on what was in place before it began?

JoshuaPundit: Sorry, but IMO this is sheer horse manure. It’s what I would expect from Jeffrey Goldberg.

Since when do we engage in wars – let alone non-constitutional ones – for things other than our own national interest? If that’s the case, I guess I missed our invasion of Sudan to protect Darfur, or our taking out of Hamas or Iran.

And what did we ‘liberate’ in Iraq, exactly? Or accomplish, aside from building a brand new infrastructure and a shiny new Muslim army at the American taxpayer’s expense for a Shi’ite Islamic republic with its laws based on Sharia? Meanwhile we’re out a trillion dollars and over 4,000 lives.

We replaced a Sunni dictator with a Shi’ite one (read up on the last ‘elections’) who’s close to Iran and whose power base is militias like the Mahdi Army and Moqtada al-Sadr.Iraq is in the process of becoming an Iranian colony.

The Sunnis, including those who we bribed to fight with us in the Awakening movement have been completely marginalized, which is why al-Qaeda in Iraq is a growing force again.

Iraq’s Christians were horribly persecuted under our watch, and the majority have fled or are trying to.

We empower our real allies in Iraq, the Kurds.

We didn’t even ‘liberate’ the oil from the wells Halliburton saved after Saddam torched them. China got that.

So what did we ‘liberate’?

Things turned out badly because we set things up that way. We didn’t make Syria regret they ever let jihadis into Iraq. We didn’t put in place a firm military governor to enforce a real occupation for the time it took. We didn’t hang insurgents on either side – Moqtada al-Sadr for instance – when they caused violence and act ruthlessly to suppress it.Instead, we saddled our troops with ridiculous Rules of Engagement.

We didn’t empower women particularly, or work to discredit Islamism and because of Bush’s fetish for ‘Arab Democracy’ we rushed the Iraqis into an election they were in no way ready for.

Bush was unsuited to be a war president. And Iraq was a huge strategic. mistake.We would have done far better to not get embroiled there in the first place unless we were going to use it as a base to take on Iran, who actually was complicit in 9/11. Even the 9/11 Commission’s report mentioned that.

I give tremendous credit to Patraeus and Ordiano for allowing us a gracious retreat, but that was what it was.

The Noisy Room: I supported President Bush when we invaded Iraq. I still believe it was a terrorist pit that needed cleaning out, however… I said at the time and I still believe that it was the wrong initial target. Iran should have been first on our dance card. We did not deal with the ‘head’ of the snake and now the snake is threatening to devour the world.

Furthermore, we did not finish the job in Iraq. We were so concerned with not offending anyone, that we offended everyone. After the death of Saddam Hussein, we should have packed our bags and gone home. Instead, we stayed, training their military and rebuilding their country. Not only was that a financial black hole for us (and still is), it was militarily foolish and pointless. In the end, we are still ‘sort of’ there, but the real winners are Iran, who now basically control Iraq. War should be treated as well, war. You go in fight, kill, break things and leave. You don’t grovel and nation build afterwards. You only preemptively strike a clear and present threat as well. Such as, let’s see… North Korea or Iran, who are threatening to nuke us. But instead, we take the real threats to our country and either talk them to death or try and buy them off, both of which ALWAYS FAIL.

We have lost many, many of our warriors and we still don’t have a clearly defined enemy. We were never allowed to declare actual ‘war.’ The real perpetrators of 9-11 have not been brought to justice. Saudi Arabia, where the majority of the terrorists came from, received no punishment at all. Neither did the backers and primary instigators of the terrorism, Iran (I don’t consider ‘sanctions’ real punishment). The terrorist masterminds who were captured still sit in jail (if you can even call it that as every need and want is met for them) and there is a good chance under the Obama-friendly regime that they will wind up in U.S. courts, rather than military tribunals. This means they could walk, get greatly reduced sentences or wind up in Club Med for wayward Jihadist radicals.

Although I feel for the Iraqis and their plight, I now no longer believe invasion of Iraq was worthwhile. Their country is based on a theocratic and militaristic barbarism that is employed throughout the Islamic world. It is a mindset that the West cannot seem to wrap their viewpoint around: “You love Pepsi, we love death.” Our invasion did nothing to make us safer or bring closure to the murders of nearly 3,000 Americans. We spilled our warriors life-blood for little to no gain and ended up doing nothing but entangling ourselves in more pointless conflicts we will not be allowed to win and further bankrupting our nation. The current conflicts in the Middle East are engineered for wealth and power redistribution. I now believe the only way to win in the Middle East is with massive bombing runs and perhaps a judicious nuke or two. Even then it won’t end the threat, just delay the conflict to end all conflicts.

The Glittering Eye: Simply stated, no, it was not worthwhile. There were better ways of spending the money, lives, and time. Our failure to pacify the country harmed our reputation. A reputation for invincibility is hard to recover once lost.

Granted, it could have been worse, for example, if we had bolted in 2005 or 2006 when the
post-war was degenerating so badly. That still doesn’t make it a strategic victory.

Pearl Harbor veteran recalls bewilderment of attack

It's strange how wars are remembered -- and forgotten. On this day, Dec. 7, let's honor Pearl Harbor's fallen and never forget that the awful attack was one of several costly battles that day.

HONOLULU — Seventy-one years ago this week, Navy veteran Lou Gore was startled by the muffled thuds of explosions and a burst of commotion while cleaning up from breakfast below deck on the USS Phoenix, a cruiser docked at Pearl Harbor.

Hurrying topside, the 18-year-old seaman second-class was confronted by pandemonium he was unable to immediately comprehend — flames shooting skyward, roiling clouds of dark, acrid smoke, swarms of fighter-bombers buzzing low overhead.

Within moments that Sunday morning, it became clear that the U.S. Pacific fleet was under attack. As reflexes from training took over, Gore and others aboard the Phoenix jumped into action and began firing back with anti-aircraft guns.

“We didn’t know (at first) those were Japanese planes,” Gore, now 88 and visiting the islands with nine members of his family, recalled in a recent interview. “We didn’t know what was happening. I just did my job.”

Gore is one of 100 aging Pearl Harbor Survivors who will attend ceremonies on Wednesday on Oahu marking the 70th anniversary of the Japanese air and naval assault that claimed 2,390 American lives and drew the United States into World War Two.

Nearly half of those who perished were sailors aboard the battleship USS Arizona, which Japanese torpedo bombers sank early in the attack, sending 1,177 of its 1,400-member crew to their deaths.

The USS Arizona Memorial, built over the remains of the ship, now forms a centerpiece of the World War Two Valor in the Pacific National Monument, an historic site administered by the National Park Service.

‘BODIES EVERYWHERE’

Gore’s vessel, the Phoenix, was anchored a short distance from the stretch of harbor known as Battleship Row, where the Arizona was moored when it was hit.

“I’ll never forget watching the … USS Arizona battleship jumping up out of the water, landing and rolling on its side,” Gore said. “There were bodies everywhere. Brooms floating in the water, canisters.”

Long after the two-hour surprise attack had ended, the base remained on edge, he recounted. “Everyone was keyed up. After the attack, at night, it wasn’t safe to be out. People were shooting at shadows.”

The Phoenix, among a handful of light cruisers and other vessels that got out of the harbor during or just after the attack, emerged unscathed.

Besides the nearly 2,400 who were killed, the attack left 1,178 people wounded, sank or heavily damaged a dozen U.S. warships and destroyed 323 aircraft, badly crippling the Pacific fleet.

As has been the practice of past anniversary ceremonies, visiting veterans, relatives and dignitaries will bow their heads for a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. on Wednesday, the time when the attack began, as military jets soar overhead in a “missing-man” formation.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon will render a salute to the fallen crew of the Arizona, and the morning service will end with a “walk of honor” by more than 100 Pearl Harbor Survivors and other World War Two veterans, many of them in their late 80s. The gathering is expected to include seven of the last known 18 survivors from Arizona’s crew.

The turnout by Pearl Harbor veterans on Wednesday is expected to be only about half of what it was last year, when about 200 attended.

Mal Middlesworth, former president of the National Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and current publisher of the Pearl Gram, a quarterly newsletter, estimates there are about 2,700 Pearl Harbor veterans still alive, approximately 5,000 total survivors.

For Gore, a resident of Seattle, this week marks his first visit to Hawaii since the 1960s, and his first opportunity to personally show his two sons, his daughter and a granddaughter where he was on the morning of the attack.

Gore went on to serve in Okinawa and New Guinea during World War Two and remained in the Navy for 30 years, including a brief stint in Korea and two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He retired as a petty officer first-class.

Despite the tributes he is receiving this year as a Pearl Harbor veteran, Gore insists he is no hero.

“I’m grateful to still be alive. So many lost their lives for no reason. … I wish I had been able to save more” (lives), he said.

Al Arabiya News: Tuesday’s attack by armed men in the eastern city of Benghazi came amid a wave of protests in the Muslim world against a U.S.-made amateur Internet film deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammed. (Reuters)

Last week, I warned of the gathering storm clouds of World War III. This week, the ponderous gears of war were set into motion by Jihadists in the name of Allah across the planet. The trigger was said to be an amateurish YouTube video that Muslims found offensive. May I just say, bull crap. The attacks in Libya and Cairo were well planned and executed. The riots in 20+ countries across the globe were also called for, planned and carried out by Islamic leaders of terror. Al-Qaeda is claiming this is in revenge for the killing of their number two man Sheikh Abu Yahya. This has all the earmarks, by the way, of one of Soros’ colored revolutions.

I find the timing of the video noteworthy and curious. Has anyone looked into who is behind the man who made it? Did anyone really look at his connections or who paid him? I would find that very interesting as this whole catastrophe has the potential of creating that ‘perfect emergency’ that Obama has been pining for. The media is claiming that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula is a Coptic Christian and has also made soft porn movies along with being a real estate agent. It is also said he has previously been convicted of bank fraud. While I have no idea if this is true, I find it convenient that a Christian is blamed for this and then further sullied by the ‘porn’ accusation. The feds are claiming he used the alias ‘Sam Bacile.’ In fact, the words ‘believed to be’ were used when he was taken into custody in an act that I can only describe as Shariah law enforcement. Did I also mention, the guy was a snitch for the feds? America, this is what electing Barack Obama has brought you. He has firmly stayed faithful to his Muslim roots.

Do you really believe this all just ‘happened’ on 9/11? Really? The United States was warned at least 3 days prior to the attack, and by some accounts it was a week. But Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and their minions did nothing. Unless of course you count drinking and partying abroad as Clinton does in excess and schmoozing with celebrities on Letterman and in Hollywood and Las Vegas as Barack Obama does. Our esteemed leader in chief could not even be bothered to stay awake when our Ambassador was being sodomized, tortured and murdered in a preplanned location where he should have been safe. Three others,including an ex-Navy SEAL were also killed. Obama went to bed and didn’t get briefed till the next day. Meanwhile, our NOC list was taken, outing all those who support America and her activities in that area. Well done. You can now count the lifespan of our intelligence agents that are still over there on an egg timer. Pardon me, but this all looks staged. Take a long look at a Post-American world:

Forget the UN, the Post-American order isn’t a blue flag, it’s a black flag with Mohammed on it. There are far more people in the world who believe in a world order based on the violent ravings of a 7th Century madman than the number of people who believe in a world order based on 19th Century European wishful thinking. And it helps that the supporters of 7th Century violence over 19th Century internationalism are far more willing to use murderous violence to get their way.

Atlas Shrugs

As I understand it, per our daft foreign policy, we don’t have Marines or other military personnel guarding our diplomats. Nope, in our infinite wisdom we leave that to the hosting country’s government and military. Genius! In other words, the fox guarding the chicken coop turned into a wolf and ate his charges and we couldn’t see it coming. Even if we had military there, they wouldn’t have ammo thanks to Hillary Clinton and her drunken mandates.

As of this morning our government is telling our personnel and their families in Tunisia and the Sudan to get out of there as soon as possible. They should be evacuating every American from every Middle Eastern country and place of unrest immediately. That includes our troops. They are being surrounded and set up to be slaughtered. We lost two Marines in Afghanistan at Camp Bastion where they were serving alongside Prince Harry. A number were hurt as well. Those that stormed the base were wearing American uniforms. More attacks are occurring as I write this.

As the White House prepares for a long siege of Arab unrest, Israel is girding her loins for battle as the High Holy Days commence. War games began in the Straight of Hormuz yesterday and will continue for 12 days:

Battleships, aircraft carriers, minesweepers and submarines from 25 nations are converging on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in an unprecedented show of force as Israel and Iran move towards the brink of war.

These are the largest war games ever undertaken in the region. The world’s leaders and their respective militaries know that war is upon us. And it may be the war to end all wars with nuclear capabilities now strewn across the globe and religious hatred fomenting hundreds of thousands — millions actually — of fanatics. The planet is a ticking time bomb and Obama has lit the fuse.

Iran is gleefully prepping for Armageddon:

Next month, Iran will stage massive military maneuvers of its own, to show that it is prepared to defend its nuclear installations against the threat of aerial bombardment.

The exercise is being showcased as the biggest air defense war game in the Islamic Republic’s history, and will be its most visible response yet to the prospect of an Israeli military strike.

Using surface-to-air missiles, unmanned drones and state-of-the-art radar, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and air force will combine to test the defenses of 3,600 sensitive locations throughout the country, including oil refineries and uranium enrichment facilities.

Their nuclear weapons are buried deep and hardened. Iran’s theocratic leadership is absolutely willing to see their country turned into glass to further a worldwide Caliphate and the Islamic empire. The chaos and war around the planet is all part of the precursor to welcome back the Twelfth Imam and the End of Days.

Obama refused to answer a reporter if these were acts of war. Think of those who stand to benefit from war:

• Barack Obama could theoretically suspend elections in war time. And then there is the oldie, but goodie martial law. I would not put it past him.
• Russia and China will let Iran do their dirty work for them and then come in and pick up the pieces in the ultimate game of Risk. In their mind, they will control the countries that will fall during the war and they will also control the natural resources and wealth they possess – primarily oil and gas.
• Venezuela and Cuba hope to control the Americas after massive war and terror attacks. Megalomaniacs of a feather…
• Islam figures they will rule the world through a Caliphate and Shariah law.
• George Soros stands to make a literal killing as countries rise and fall. Money and power are his aphrodisiac as well as his son’s.

There are others out there wielding power and money behind the scenes. That’s not a conspiracy – that’s just the plain truth. It has always been that way. Each believes he will win in the end and then kill the others he joined forces with to gain power. Sadly, at this point in time, Russia and China look to be the strongest and are willing to sacrifice the most people. They are also the most brutal and the strongest militarily.

Our problem from the beginning is that we refuse to face evil. America has refused to name our enemy out of political correctness. Our enemies are radical Islam and Communism. It’s not a War on Terror – that is a symptom. Not calling our enemies out is about to get us annihilated.

I am torn as so many of you are. My heart and soul still cries out for retribution over 9/11. I have never felt that we went after the true culprit, which is Iran. We should have finished this war back in the late 70s, early 80s. Now it threatens to engulf us and the civilized world. Our weakness is apparent and our enemies smell blood in the water. But while I suppress the urge to call for the leveling of Iran and other Islamic countries, I know that once we go there, our world will fill with blood and death. It is my belief that Obama will take us to war, not to win it, but to bolster himself politically. He secretly gloats at the thought of Israel’s destruction. He wants America to fall and is helping our enemies achieve that through acts of war.
