LEAKED NETWORK MEMO REVEALS: Obama Controls Your Television Set

On September 10th of this year the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) posted a press release informing the world that “from October 19-25, more than 60 network TV shows [will] spotlight the power and personal benefits of service,” and that this “unprecedented block of TV programming is the first wave of a multi-year ‘I Participate’ campaign.”

On its face this all sounds rather benign in that silly, liberal do-gooder kind of way. The networks have launched these kinds of campaigns before and other than some clunky exposition awkwardly inserted into your favorite show to meet the mandate — no harm, no foul.

Nateperkins-MOVIEBarackObamaYESWECANChangePresidentialCampaignSpee667

But this year there are a couple new strangers in town: “Volunteerism” and “Service.” You’ve heard of them. Their names have been bandied everywhere since President Obama took office, and this internal memo from the EIF to network showrunners obtained by Big Hollywood shows that the entertainment industry is well acquainted and eager to introduce both to as vast an audience as possible:

eif-dochttp://www.docstoc.com/docs/document-preview.aspx?doc_id=13226597

Like the NEA story, once again we see the same buzzwords pop up; suggested topics pitched to an overwhelmingly left-of-center group: Education, health, environment, the economy and lastly — almost as an afterthought as some kind of “bi-partisan” cover – support for military families.

We’ll have to wait until next week to see what effect this initiative will have on the 60 television (and news) programs in question, but thanks to the intrepid Patrick Courrielche and Stage Right, today we can answer the simple question of…

“What’s wrong with this?”

Doing the work the Kamikaze Media (many of whom are participating in this event rather than digging for the story) refuses, and with the help of Big Government’s Dana Loesch, Patrick and Stage Right have discovered that when it comes to this White House – whether it’s the NEA conference calls or EIF’s iParticipate programming — all roads funnel into one place: online volunteer portals, including Serve.gov, where if you plug in “health care” all kinds of Planned Parenthood openings pop up along with a video dispelling those ugly “myths” knocking ObamaCare.

There’s scarier stuff, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. *cough*Trutherism*cough*

We’ll start with Stage Right. Next week, tens, if not hundreds of millions of Americans, will be urged through the (ab)use of public airwaves to log on to the EIF iParticipate site and volunteer. Stage Right will give you a preview of what the unsuspecting and well-intentioned, including your children, will find.

If you’re thinking it’s all about “Meals on Wheels,” think again.

From there, Patrick Courrielche will describe how this EIF initiative fits into a broader White House plan, including the push to politicize the NEA, to redefine “art” as “service” and engage an all too compliant news, entertainment, and artistic community to start a volunteer army through these online portals.

First the NEA, now the EIF…

Starting to notice a pattern?

Big Brother Is Watching You!! - White House Collects Web Users' Data

Social-media messages go into archives

EXCLUSIVE:

The White House is collecting and storing comments and videos placed on its social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube without notifying or asking the consent of the site users, a failure that appears to run counter to President Obama's promise of a transparent government and his pledge to protect privacy on the Internet.

Marc Rotenberg, president of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said the White House signaled that it would insist on open dealings with Internet users and, in fact, should feel obliged to disclose that it is collecting such information.

"The White House has not been adequately transparent, particularly on how it makes use of new social media techniques, such as this example," he said.

Defenders of the White House actions said the Presidential Records Act requires that the administration gather the information and that it was justified in taking the additional step of asking a private contractor to "crawl and archive" all such material. Nicholas Shapiro, a White House spokesman, declined to say when the practice began or how much the new contract would cost.

Susan Cooper, a spokeswoman for National Archives and Records Administration, said the presidential records law applies to "social media" and to public comments "received by the president or immediate staff."

Mr. Obama signed a memo in January stating that his efforts to maintain an open government would be "unprecedented" and "ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation and collaboration."

An Obama campaign document on technology pledged that, as president, Mr. Obama "will strengthen privacy protections for the digital age and will harness the power of technology to hold government and business accountable for violations of personal privacy."

In a June 5, 2008, article in PC Magazine, Mr. Obama said, "The open information platforms of the 21st century can also tempt institutions to violate the privacy of citizens. We need sensible safeguards that protect privacy in this dynamic new world."

Does anyone for even a moment believe that this is a coincidence?? The fact that the White House is collecting information now… after the releases of the ACORN video and the consistent slide in support for ObamaCare??

Is this legal? And if it is, it needs to be changed! And even if it is… is it ethical? Collecting average American’s information for no reason and without notification. Notify the White House, your congressman and Senator that you want this stopped! It is un-American even if it is legal.

Victory for Major Garrett: White House Makes Security Changes to Web Site Following Complaints Over E-Mails

white flag

The e-mail address set up for people to report "fishy" information about health care reform has become inactive. The White House also has added two new filter devices to its "Contact Us" section on its Web site, following complaints from people who said they were receiving unsolicited e-mails from the administration.

The White House on Monday implemented several new changes to its Web site, apparently aimed at reducing the number of people who receive unsolicited e-mails from the administration and at battling charges that it's collecting personal information on critics.

After the White House took heat for asking people to report "fishy" information about health care reform, the e-mail address set up for that purpose became inactive Monday.

It's unclear whether the White House pulled the plug on the controversial account, flag@whitehouse.gov, or whether there is a bug in the system.

But the error message that shows up indicates it is a permanent change.

"The email address you just sent a message to is no longer in service," the message says. "We are now accepting your feedback about health insurance reform via: http://www.whitehouse.gov/realitycheck."

Through the "reality check" site, set up last week to address what the White House said were health care reform rumors, the White House is still asking people to send in their "myths" on health care. But that site now includes a warning that says, "please refrain from submitting any individual's personal information, including their e-mail address, without their permission."

The administration has heard mounting complaints from the public in the past week about the way it is collecting and sending out e-mails.

The request for "fishy" information led to charges, which the White House denied, that it was trying to compile some kind of "enemies list."

Addressing another complaint about its e-mail system, the White House also has implemented two new changes to its Web site that could reduce the number of people who receive unsolicited e-mails.

The changes appear to have been made after the White House acknowledged the problem Sunday evening -- it suggested that third-party groups could be sending in e-mail addresses that get attached to the White House distribution list, accounting for the hundreds of complaints from people who said they had received unwanted messages.

In a written statement released to FOX News, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said the White House was trying to correct the problem.

"We are implementing measures to make subscribing to e-mails clearer, including preventing advocacy organizations from signing people up to our lists without their permission when they deliver petition signatures and other messages on individuals' behalf," he said.

Following that, the White House added two new filter devices to its "Contact Us" section on its Web site.

Now, anybody who fills out a comment on that section must uncheck a box that says, "sign up to get e-mail updates." The box is automatically checked when the page loads, so commenters must take an action to uncheck it.

Anyone submitting a comment now also must type in two words that appear on the page in a strange font -- a security step similar to one that appears on many commercial Web sites.

One possible reason for the confusion was that advocacy groups, when dealing with online petitions, were sending in contact information whenever they made contact with the White House -- the e-mail addresses affiliated with members or petition-signers could then have become embedded in the White House distribution list.

The White House indicated its Web site managers were going to seek out and block online petitions so that people can only sign up for information individually.

The two changes noticed on the White House Web site Monday could be part of that process.
Shapiro said Sunday that any recipients who got unwanted e-mails can unsubscribe "by clicking the link at the bottom of the e-mail or (telling) whomever forwarded it to them not to forward such information anymore."

The problem was made public after FOX News received hundreds of e-mails from people who said they got an e-mail last week from senior adviser David Axelrod, even though they had never requested any communication from the White House.

White House officials say they're not intentionally trying to contact people who don't want to be contacted, and they don't want the controversy to deepen.

"How does that help us?" one official asked. "We don't want to send e-mails to people who don't want them. We want to send e-mails to people who do want them and there are lots of them. But there is no benefit to us at all in sending e-mails that people don't want."

FOX News' Major Garrett contributed to this report.

Major Garrett received several emails asking him why they would be receiving emails from Axelrod at the White House when they had never contacted the White House, and could he ask about it. When Garrett questioned Robert Gibbs, Gibbs became exceedingly agitated and said he would have to have a copy of the emails in question to see if the people were on “the list”?!? Guess there was a list… and Major asked the right questions… or wrong question if you ask Gibbs and David Axelrod!?!

Why Is Axelrod Sending Them E-Mails? What is ‘The List’ and Who Is On It? - Updated

For any of you still doubtful that Team Obama has a greater agenda and uses Big Brother tactics, perhaps this will be one of those… “I should have had V-8 moments?”

Obviously ‘the fears’ that the White House was going to be creating enemies' and other lists from the information provided them and of the providers have already reared their ugly heads… what has it been a week?

Major Garret is checking with the people who provided him the emails to see if it was okay with them to turn over their emails to Robert Gibbs and Team Obama. Guess if Axelrod already has them, it probably won’t matter. Although Garret noted that now that the cameras are off, Robert Gibbs is no longer as interested in the emails or dealing with Garrett. Hmmm… Are we surprised?

John Cornyn Accuses Obama of Compiling 'Enemies List' - Updated

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is worried that the Obama administration is actively compiling an enemies list of citizens and organizations that do not agree with the president's plan to reform health care. On Wednesday, he penned a letter to Obama voicing his strong objections to a recent posting on the White House website that asked concerned Americans to forward instances of misinformation being put forth on the proposed legislation. Here's part of Cornyn's letter:

"I can only imagine the level of justifiable outrage had your predecessor asked Americans to forward e-mails critical of his policies to the White House."

The original blog post at Whitehouse.gov was titled "Facts Are Stubborn Things," and included a video clip from Communications Director Linda Douglass refuting a Drudge Report headline claiming Obama wanted to "eliminate" private health coverage. Later, the post made the following pitch to readers:

"There's a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from out of control personal finances to end-of-life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain e-mails or through casual conversation. Since we can't keep track of all of them here at the White House, we're asking for your help. If you get an email or have seen something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."

White House spokesman Adam Abrams denied that the e-mail request had anything to do with creating an enemies list, saying that it was simply a way to keep track of "intentionally misleading" information:

"We want to be sure people have the facts about health insurance reform that will lower costs, protect consumers from insurance regulations that deny them coverage and assure quality and affordable health care for all Americans."

Obama used the reach and viral power of the Internet to help him get elected, and he knows that staying on top of a story in this day and age requires a rapid-response approach on the web. No president has borne the brunt of Internet rumors more than Obama (the birth certificate issue and the rest), but that may simply be a function of increased cultural fluency with the technology. But could the flagging of sites and individual users who oppose health care reform constitute a modern-day enemies list?

President Obama, Linda Douglas, And The Very, Very Stubborn Facts

Could you be on President Obama’s “enemies list” and not even know it?

If you dare to disagree with him, you might be.

Just to be clear, the allegation that President Obama has been compiling an “enemies list” was officially raised last Thursday by Senator John Cornyn of Texas. Left-wing bloggers were quick to determine that Senator Cornyn is crazy, and to dismiss the entire incident, yet the White House regarded Cornyn’s remarks seriously enough that by Friday, it was responding to Cornyn and insisting that he is wrong.

So what was the “incident?“ By now you’ve probably learned about an apparent attempt by the Obama Administration to gather details about Americans who are allegedly “spreading disinformation,” in the midst of the national healthcare reform debate. The controversy stems from some language posted at the official web site of the White House (whitehouse.gov), wherein Linda Douglas, the communications director for the White House Health Reform Office, attempts to refute the claims that President Obama prefers a “single payer” (that is, an all government-run approach) health insurance approach.

"Facts are stubborn things," Douglas begins (a quote from President John Adams). Then she goes on to write:

“There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag @ Whitehouse.Gov. ”

Now, to put this incident into broader context, you need to first understand that Ms. Douglas’ remarks appear to be made in response to content posted on another web site. And adjacent to her text, Ms. Douglas provides a video greeting, recorded while she sat at a desk, wherein she recites many of the same things that were written in her textual message on the web site.

But at the desk where Ms. Douglas is seated, there is a computer beside her, and on the computer screen is, quite vividly, the homepage for the web site Drudgereport.com . And it just so happened that, earlier in the week, Drudgereport.com posted links to video recordings, one dating back to 2003 and the other to 2007, wherein Barack Obama stated before two live audiences (and in no uncertain terms) that he wants our country to adopt a “single payer,” “universal” health insurance system. That’s not what President Obama is promoting now. Today, he insists that he envisions a government-run healthcare plan to be only one among many options available to Americans. Yet, there he was - six years ago, and two years ago, respectively - saying the exact opposite of what he is saying today.

For her part, Ms. Douglas attempts to refute the “single payer” concern in her own video, by introducing - and then displaying - a clip of President Obama from July 28th of this year, wherein he reassured an audience that government run healthcare will not supplant private healthcare. But that fails to address the fact that before becoming President, Barack Obama argued for the elimination of private health insurance altogether (on the 2003 video clip, Obama even lamented that it would probably take ten to fifteen years to get private insurers out of the healthcare market completely).

And not only is Douglas ignoring the “facts” about Obama calling for an elimination of private health care insurers during his pre-presidential years, she is also changing the topic just a bit. She reiterates that President Obama is actively pursuing “health insurance reform,” rather than “healthcare reform.” Those two subjects are inextricably attached, but they are not the same thing, and to place emphasis on “insurance,” takes the spotlight off the most ugly facet of Obama’s agenda - he’s “selling” government-run healthcare, and thus far Americans are not buying it.

It’s nothing new to see “political spin” emerging from the White House. Spokespersons for the Presidents are always attempting to quell controversies and avoid negative attention being placed upon the President, all the while advancing the President’s message. And while Ms. Douglas is not the official Press Spokesperson for President Obama (that job belongs, of course, to Robert Gibbs), she is nonetheless fulfilling a similar role, as it regards communicating about Obama’s healthcare agenda.

What is disturbing, however, about Ms. Douglas’ message on the web site, is her apparent attempt to have Americans “snitching” on each other. She is, quite literally, asking you, if you identify something on the web about health insurance that is “fishy,” to “report” what you encountered to the U.S. Government. If you happen to have published a blog entry, or an opinion piece, or even a “letter to the editor” that expressed an opinion about the health care debate that may have been different from President Obama’s, well, perhaps your government has collected data on you.

Barack Obama once wanted to eliminate private health insurance, and the White House is snooping on private citizens. Those are very, very stubborn facts, now aren’t they?

The Community Organizer Doesn’t Like People Organizing???

clip_image002

It is an interesting concept. We have a president who essentially is a community organizer. It is pretty much his only work experience. Yet he and his fellow Democrats seem very angry that people might be organizing and standing up against his policies.

Once upon a time, liberals prided themselves, as the staunchest defenders of free speech. Now they are its fiercest opponents. They were also at the center of the baby-boomer generation protests of the 1960’s… the hippies, flower children, peaceniks and anti-establishment kids were all liberals.

The left has always loved community organizing. And Senator Obama, candidate Obama, and The Great Uniter Obama as recently as fall 2008 told supporters, “Go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face." Hmmm… I guess when they are getting in your face, President Obama, things are different?

Senior White House adviser, David Axelrod and deputy chief of staff, Jim Messina, gave Senate Democrats ‘a battle plan for their summer recess, arming the lawmakers with tips for avoiding disastrous town hall meetings while showing the participants the popular aspects of the reform efforts’; basically telling them if they hit you hard ‘punch them back twice as hard’. Obama, himself, said at a meeting in Virginia, “Stop talking and get out of the way” about people who don’t agree with him. Hello… this is The Great Uniter??

I do not belong to any organized groups and I am not registered as a Democrat or a Republican. And out of interest I attended two tax tea parties last April, read the main healthcare reform bill that the House is looking at and pushing, HR-3200, from cover to cover, and then wrote up an outline of the main points including the link to the bill, should someone else choose to read it or verify my findings. I sent a copy to my Congressman, emailed it to my friends and then made copies and delivered one to every doorstep in my 500 home senior community, where I live, with the suggestion that everyone read as much of the bill as they could and then come to an impromptu get-together at our community center, two days later. I expected 40 to 50 attendees. We got 312 and then I stopped counting because we were over the allowed fire marshal attendance umber for the facility. And since then I have read every piece of literature, every email and every tidbit that I could find on the 5 healthcare bills floating around in the two houses of Congress and any related articles. And I have attended a couple other healthcare meetings and receive online updates from my Congressman.

My first question is, “How many Congressman, Senators, White House Advisors and Aides and even President Obama have done the same?” Secondly, IF NOT, “Why not and how can you be holding town halls and spouting off your opinions, let alone voting?” And thirdly, “How can you be making fun of concerned Americans exercising their first amendment rights?” The answers to two and three are, “You can’t… unless you just don’t care about any of the facts; what the voters think; and you are determined to vote for socialized or nationalized medicine (in one step or two or three) that covers illegal aliens while rationing healthcare to seniors and the disabled; paying for abortions and promoting “duty to die” policies, whether directly or indirectly; and giving all Americans worse care for higher costs with long waits, while putting government into all aspects of our lives (medical records, health decisions, access to our bank accounts, end of life decisions and the list goes on), while not participating in any of this yourselves…

At all the meetings I personally attended there was no organization or coordination, other than someone saying, “Show up here if you are interested in or concerned about: taxes, healthcare, too much government...” No agendas, no pre-meetings or pre-conceived goals, no professional signs or banners; just concerned and worried American citizens and legal residents looking for answers and wanting government to notice.

Over the past few days, I have made it a point to watch all the town hall videos available on television and online. I see concerned and worried Americans looking for answers and hoping their government hears them. There are no swastikas like Nancy Pelosi talked about, and had there been she would have had photos or film. There is no one who looks like they are a part of an organized group with professional signs or shirts that represent organizations on the right in the crowds, only the pro-Obama professionally organized groups from the left… ACORN, SEIU, La Raza etc etc, who are now being organized and sent out to disrupt the town halls and intimidate and embarrass the concerned citizens.

The elected officials at the town halls are unprepared and unaware, and the majority of officials are focused on selling the party line instead of listening to their constituents. The senior citizens, average Americans, moms and dads, veterans and small business owners at the healthcare town halls fall into two groups; either informed because they have read the healthcare bill and are concerned with the content or are against it or those that haven’t read it and want to ask questions and get ‘real’ answers from people who have (or should have) read the bill.

I have seen people crying, upset, frustrated because their representative know less than they do and just plain tired of being lied to. These are not organized mobs or ‘tea baggers’ or professional agitators. They are Americans who love their Country, respect the Constitution, want less government not more, and want the medical care they deserve and have paid for, for their twilight years. They want reform of Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits and Reservation Benefits that are government run programs riddled with fraud and abused by frivolous lawsuits and whose funds have been pillaged and borrowed from by the government for years instead of invested and protected. These changes plus some sensible changes in the medical insurance rules like portable coverage, focus on prevention, inclusion of alternative and holistic medicine and supplements, no more exclusion for pre-existing conditions, allowing the self-employed and small businesses to form and buy insurance as co-ops, allowing inter-state sales of insurance and tighter regulation of Big Pharma and the AMA would pretty much take care of the uninsured and spiraling costs. Take out covering people who are in the U.S. illegally and paying for abortions and elective surgeries and allowing ideas from the Republicans and any politicians and companies who have made positive changes in healthcare or learned from trial and error and we could reform American healthcare without destroying the best coverage in the world or giving up our freedoms.

HR 3200 or any form of government-run or controlled healthcare is not the change that most Americans want or thought they were voting for. And being accused of being a part of organized mobs by the community organizer president and government who just asked Americans to snitch on each other was not the hope Americans voted for either.

White House Initiates “Snitch” Program On What They Call Misinformation Being Disbursed on Healthcare Reform

Is the White House Attacking Democracy??

The White House has initiated a program to have people inform them of and forward anything they consider misinformation to them on Healthcare Refrom.  HMMM… I believe it is unconstitutional for the White House (government) to spy on or investigate people for exercising their First Amendment Right?!?  Sounds a bit like Communist Country… but they are doing it anyway. :-(

The White House launched a coordinated effort Tuesday to combat what it calls a “viral whisper campaign” to torpedo health care reform. Its playbook: the same one Barack Obama’s campaign used in 2008 to shoot down rumors and questions about his citizenship, faith and patriotism. The new offensive started early Tuesday morning when the White House posted a video response to a hodgepodge of clips on the Drudge Report that portrayed President Obama as favoring the elimination of private insurance. On the White House blog, Obama’s director of new media, Macon Phillips, asked supporters to send in leads for debunking chain e-mails or anything else that “seems fishy.”

It continued through the day with press secretary Robert Gibbs and Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse both saying a series of confrontational town hall meetings were manufactured by Republicans, conservative groups and lobbyists who are paid to drum up opposition.

Woodhouse described them as “angry mobs of rabid right-wing extremists” that populated McCain-Palin rallies last year.

Tuesday was just the start of the offensive, White House aides said.

The White House and its allies are developing a clearinghouse website to debunk rumors and myths — similar to the FightTheSmears.com site used during the campaign. They plan to use more video, Twitter, e-mail lists and other new media tools to “combat the right-wing noise machine” and dedicate new resources to rapid response on health care, according to a White House official.

Dan Pfeiffer, the deputy White House communications director, who served as the campaign communications director, is also expected to take an increased role in the stepped-up operation, the official said.

“We are going to be very aggressive,” said David Axelrod, a White House senior adviser. “The last thing we want to do is let misimpressions fester because we were laggard in responding.”

Former President Bill Clinton attempted to overhaul health care before the Internet and cable news were mainstays in most American households. He had to worry most about TV ads featuring a middle-class couple named “Harry and Louise.”

But this time, the threats come on multiple levels, severely complicating efforts to explain an already confusing and challenging set of policy prescriptions to the average voter.

Obama’s health care overhaul has been dogged in recent weeks by what the administration has called a “disinformation campaign” waged through the Internet, chain e-mails and talk radio. Conservatives have charged that Obama’s health care proposal would promote euthanasia, encourage federal funding of abortions, end private insurance and force every American into a public insuranceplan. The White House and Democratic congressional leaders dispute each charge.

The opposition has manifested itself in a series of confrontational town halls in which proponents of the president’s health reform effort are shouted down and booed.

“Much like we saw at the McCain-Palin rallies last year, where crowds were baited with cries of ‘socialist,’ ‘communist,’ and where the birthers movement was born, these mobs of extremists are not interested in having a thoughtful discussion about the issues — but like some Republican leaders have said, they are interested in ‘breaking’ the president and destroying his presidency,” Woodhouse said in a statement.

In his daily briefing, Gibbs went after Rick Scott, founder of Conservatives for Patients’ Rights, for reportedly taking credit for the town halls.

“You’ve got somebody who’s very involved, a leader of that group that’s very involved in — in the status quo, a CEO that used to run a health care company that was fined by the federal government $1.7 billion for fraud,” Gibbs said. “I think that’s a lot of what you need to know about the motives of that group.”

Conservatives for Patients’ Rights has posted lists of town halls — and videos of disrupted town halls — on its website, and it’s sending out “town hall alert” notices to people on its mailing lists.

Ken Spain, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, called the DNC’s accusation about a concerted effort “offensive.” Scott said in a statement that his group did not need to manufacture anger, as Gibbs and others have charged.

“It is a shame that Mr. Gibbs chooses to dismiss these Americans and their very real concerns, instead opting to level personal attacks,” Scott said. “The simple fact is that the more Americans learn about the president’s public-option plan, the more they realize it is a massive government takeover that will mean higher taxes, bigger deficits and interfere with their current coverage, resulting in delayed or denied medical care for them and their families.”

With the same circle of advisers in the White House as in the campaign, Obama knows how quickly something that he views as ridiculous and unworthy of a response can spiral into something unavoidable.

Early in the general election campaign, Obama press aides refused to respond to some of the more outlandish claims that circulated through e-mail inboxes and the far reaches of theInternet. They did not want to fuel any story line by providing a rebuttal that would then generate more attention from mainstream reporters.

But a question from a McClatchy reporter directly to Obama about one of the unsubstantiated allegations — that his wife, Michelle, had been recorded using the word “whitey”— prompted the campaign in June 2008 to shift tactics and go for a more aggressive attack.

Within a week of fielding the question, the Obama campaign started FightTheSmears.com, which served as a clearinghouse for challenging any and all rumors — from questions about his birthplace, his patriotism and his religion to an allegation that Michelle Obama had ordered lobster and caviar from room service at a hotel (she hadn’t).

“Unanswered, erroneous charges tend to settle because they are not challenged,” Axelrod said of lessons learned from the campaign. “So we are not going to allow that to happen.”

The partisan fighting stood in contrast to a call for bipartisanship that Obama issued to the Senate Democratic Caucus on Tuesday, during an almost two-hour lunch meeting aimed at preparing them for the August recess.

“The president discussed how the current tone and culture in Washington made it more difficult than it has been in the past to work in a bipartisan fashion,” according to a White House official who attended the lunch. “In particular, he singled out Republican senators who are trying to work in a bipartisan fashion even in the context of a vocal minority in their party who doubt that the president was born in the U.S.”

Obama also added that he did not like seeing “left-wing groups attack fellow Democrats,” the aide said.

Some in the room expressed concern with how Democrats would maintain support for health care reform through the break.

“The president urged them, as they were holding town hall meetings, to make the case clearly about why this is important, why it’s important to our economy and our fiscal situation as a country and how it would benefit Americans looking for health insurance and how it would help those who have it,” the aide said.
