Benjamin Rush said, “If we ever take the Bible out of school, we will spend our time and money fighting crime.” (The same can be said for fighting uncontrolled teen pregnancy and abortions!)

Such was our founder’s belief in the preeminence of God that when the First Continental Congress convened in 1774, Massachusetts delegate Thomas Cushing suggested to the assembly that together they pray for divine guidance and protection. The historical events that would forever change the world were preparing to unfold: war loomed on the horizon; the Declaration of Independence would be signed, and a nation “conceived in liberty” would be born. In this moment, men of varied religious beliefs -- Presbyterians, Episcopalians, some Quakers, others Baptists or Congregationalists – were led in prayer by an Episcopal priest in an appeal to the almighty that was described as “extraordinary…filling the bosom of every man present.”

It would not be the last time the founders appealed to the Almighty God.

James Madison acknowledged God’s favor in our founding in Federalist 37 referring to “a finger of that almighty hand, which has been so frequently and signally extended to our relief in the critical stages of the revolution.” I dare say that men like Madison and Cushing would not recognize the America of today, filled with politicians afraid to confess their faith or educators fearful of offending the sensibilities of their students with any mention of God.

Math teacher Brad Johnson of Westview High School of the Poway School District in San Diego, California, is a case in point.

In 2007, Westview Principal Dawn Kastner ordered Johnson to remove banners hanging in his classroom because they contained the words “God” and “Creator.” According to media reports the banners, which had hung in his classroom for 25 years, measured approximately 7 feet long by 2 feet wide and carried the phrases: "In God We Trust," "One Nation Under God," "God Bless America," "God Shed His Grace on Thee" and "All Men Are Created Equal, They are Endowed by Their Creator."

Kastner objected to the banners, claiming that they promoted a Judeo-Christian viewpoint and might make some students feel uncomfortable. The school district agreed. Oddly enough neither Kastner nor school district officials were concerned with posters hanging in other classrooms containing Buddhist, Islamic, and Tibetan prayers or those containing anti-religious messages that might make Christians uncomfortable. What remains unclear is why those that preach diversity and tolerance seem incapable of practicing those same virtues when it comes to Christians and the role of Christian faith in our American history.

Kastner and Poway district officials might argue that they are simply enforcing the Constitution’s wall of separation between church and state. The U.S. Constitution, of course, recognizes no such wall. There are roughly 4,500 words in the original unamended document and not one of them was written to imply that God – specifically the God of Abraham – should be hidden from school children.

The Bible – Old and New Testament – was the most common piece of household literature of the time; it was the primary textbook from which children and adults learned reading, writing, and morality. The first American dictionary contains biblical references on just about every page.

Moreover, the founders believed religion and religious teaching to be essential to the maintenance of a free society. The great patriot Benjamin Rush of Pennsylvania wrote, “All its [Christian revelation] doctrines and precepts are calculated to promote the happiness of society, and the safety and well being of civil government.”

Therefore, reasoned Rush, “the only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments.” In short the founders recognized not only the nexus between virtue and happiness, but also virtue and liberty.

We should not be surprised when those that endeavor to erase God from our history also seek to shackle us to the administrative state. Man will “either be governed by a power from within or controlled by a power from without.”

In his farewell address, George Washington said, “Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

The founders would find the mushy multi-cultural political correctness of the 21st century to be outrageous.
The first round of the legal battle was won by Johnson. U.S. District Court Judge Roger T. Benitez delivered a scathing rebuke to the Poway School District, correctly reasoning that “recognizing that God places prominently in our nation's history does not create an Establishment Clause violation requiring curettage and disinfectant for Johnson's public high school classroom walls. It is a matter of historical fact that our institutions and government actors have in past and present times given place to a supreme God."

Not content to leave well-enough alone, the Poway School District has appealed the decision, which will be heard by the liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Heaven help us!

Thomas Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers consciously and purposely chose the values of Christianity as a basis for the American value and legal systems. And, both the concept of and the word GOD are evident everywhere in our founding documents, buildings, laws, traditions. and the writings left from the Founders.

Yet, the Founding Fathers were very tolerant of other religions and believed in freedom of religion for all, including not believing or practicing.

(What this means in simple terms is that religious groups, other than Christians and Jews may practice their religion as long as they are peaceful and do not impinge on the basic values and traditions of the majority and of the Country’s founding principles.  It does not mean that (hostile or questionable) religious groups whose goal is to undermine our way of life have Carte Blanche to do so or can tell us what we can believe or do.  It also allows people not to have a religion, but that does not mean that the small minority or atheists have the right to stop the majority from putting up Crosses, Menorahs, Christmas Trees, Easter Bunnies, lines of scriptures, etc.; sing carols;  or teach and reference God.  Atheists have the right not to participate, but they do not have the right to prevent the majority’s traditions.  Today a Federal Judge ruled that a National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional…  That is absolutely a wrong and progressive interpretation and ruling!!  Another Progressive move was to stop teaching Constitutional Law in Law Schools and replace it with the teaching of case law… which takes us further and further away from the Constitution and our founding principles.

Freedom of religion and tolerance did not mean that those we allowed to share in our freedom could then tell us that “We”, the Judeo-Christian base and majority of this country, had to change our beliefs, traditions, practices or laws to accommodate their feelings.  The Founding Fathers counted on Americans knowing the Constitution, U.S, history, the Bible and using common sense.  Sadly most of us don’t know or use any of those sources.

Also… Did you know that nowhere in the Constitution does it talk about Separation of Church and State.  It is only found in two references, including an often referenced letter between Thomas Jefferson and his cousin.  The reasoning behind the concept of separation is to protect religion from government controls and restrictions not to protect the government from religion or references to God~  So how do we find ourselves with the present upside-down notions?

Those misguided ideas and thoughts have been programmed into us by the American Progressive Movement that like a creeping vine has infiltrated every part of our life and slowly brainwashed several generations now and has been promoted and defended by liberal organizations like ACLU and corruptive concepts like Political Correctness. They were very incendiary, they've inflamed a big debate in the United Kingdom. One of the photos that you released showed, for example, the Buckingham Palace – the home of the British royal family – converted into a mosque. Is that your aim, and how did you expect the British public to react, by releasing photos like that?  Anjem Choudary: One of our campaigns, in fact, was to invite Britain to adopt the shari'a as an alternative. Part and parcel of that was to give them an example of how Britain may look, had the shari'abeen implemented. For example, under the shari'a, there is no monarchy system, so Buckingham Palace certainly would not be the home for the monarch who is in existence today, which is Queen Elizabeth II.  Rather, we can have an alternative – not necessarily cast in stone – but one of the options, for example, is to have a masjid – which, in the past, used to be a hospital, a place of refuge, and had many other functions.  As well, there will be no idolatry in Islam. Therefore, Nelson's Column would not exist, and we propose an alternative as, perhaps, a place where people could be called to prayer.  But all of this process was on the one hand, to engage the British public's mind in Islam's alternative to man-made law, and on the other hand, to engage in a public discussion on what is the future for mankind.  I do believe, and as Muslims, we do believe, that there is a clash between two civilizations today. One civilization is based upon Man – that believes that Man is sovereign, and they believe they have the right to legislate – and one civilization that believes that sovereignty and supremacy belongs to God.  [...]  The people in the past used to worship the idols which they used to make with their hands. Nowadays, people worship idols which are more intellectual – like democracy, liberalism, freedom, and so on. So these need to be destroyed as well, and replaced with worshipping and obeying Allah.  [...]  Interviewer: Two million people turned out on the streets of the UK several years ago, to protest British troops going to Iraq in the first place. Why not join with them?  Anjem Choudary: No, because I don't believe that their call was correct. They were calling for socialist and Communist ideas, and many people are pacifists.  We do believe, as Muslims, that every Muslim has a right to defend himself, his life, honor, and property. [...]  Interviewer: The issues of freedom of speech are represented by many organizations around the UK. Who do you think that you represent in the United Kingdom? Who are you giving a voice to?  Anjem Choudary: You know, I don't believe in the concept of freedom of expression. I don't believe in democracy. I don't believe in secularism or liberalism. I believe these are idols that the people are worshipping nowadays, taking them away from worshipping our lord, Allah. I believe that sovereignty and supremacy belongs to God, but I will function within the realms of their so-called "freedom," to expose their own fallacies.  [...]  Interviewer: The media has, however, said that you are living off benefits. If that's not correct, you can say that here.  Anjem Choudary: No, it's irrelevant. Prime Minister Gordon Brown takes child benefit, and he takes child tax credit. So why can't I take the same thing?  You know, the Prophet said... In his time... In the time of the Prophet, they used to have a tribal system, where they gave money to the Muslims. Omar Ibn Al-Khattab said, in fact, to the Prophet: "Oh prophet of Allah, they give us money, but we attack their system." The Prophet said: "To whom does the money belong? The wealth belongs to Allah. Take it, but don't lie, and don't cheat." I don't lie, I don't cheat. If I am given wealth, I will take it. It is allowed for me, it is halal for me Islamically.  [...]  Let's strip away Islam and the shari'a, and just talk about what we are calling for. We want a system providing the basic needs for the people. Gas, electricity, water, etcetera, will be free-of-charge, because they are resources and the Prophet said that we're partner in them. We want a system where people are not exploited. Industries like pornography, alcohol, gambling, and usury will be completely eradicated. We're calling for a system which treats human beings like human beings. I do believe that if the people wake up from the slumber and the darkness in which they are living, and they see the beauty, the perfection, and the justice of Islam – they will be drawn towards it.  But we have many obstacles – the physical obstacles of the regimes, and the intellectual obstacles of the demonizing of Islam and the shari'a. God Rest Ye Merry Merchants

In his mawkish 1942 hit "White Christmas," Bing Crosby yearned for a holiday "just like the one I used to know." The extraordinary popularity of Crosby's nostalgic longing (the all-time top-selling single until it was eclipsed by "Candle in the Wind 1997," Elton John's mawkish tribute to Princess Diana) suggests the holiday's tremendous power to revive memories--perhaps only imaginary, idealized memories--of childhood and Christmases past. According to Karal Ann Marling, "Christmas is the universal memory" for contemporary Americans (whether they're Christian or not), an event in which "virtually everybody has played a part." By telling the story of Americans' celebration of Christmas, she promises to uncover a surprisingly neglected piece of not only our national past, but our collective wishes and psyche.

Marling, a prolific and inventive cultural historian at the University of Minnesota who has written books on topics ranging from George Washington (George Washington Slept Here: Colonial Revivals and American Culture, 1876-1986) and Norman Rockwell to Disneyland (Designing Disney's Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance) and Graceland (Graceland: Going Home with Elvis) and As Seen on TV: The Visual Culture of Everyday Life in the 1950s, now turns her attention to the history of America's most lavishly celebrated holiday. Marling has a keen eye for offbeat topics, arresting detail and original interpretations, and refuses "to plug the contents of the national Christmas stocking into the socket of orthodox historical discourse" (certainly that sounds unadvisable). She insists instead that her goal is to unwrap the hidden meaning of quotidian, but telling objects and practices to reveal the holiday's deeper significance.

Myriad "scraps of Christmas detritus"--and Christmas generates loads of detritus--supply Marling with ample material: Shortly after Halloween, America's shopping malls and stores are festooned with red and green and stocked from floor to ceiling with Christmas gifts. In the days after Christmas, discarded trees, still dangling tinsel, lie amid trash bags stuffed with discarded wrapping paper and packaging on curbs across the nation. Somewhere in between the shopping bags and the trash bags, millions of Americans attend their annual office party, endure children's pageants, spend billions of dollars buying presents, cook traditional feasts, and gather with family and friends to exchange gifts and celebrate the nation's most extravagant holiday. Wrapping paper, lights, ornaments, store window displays, trees, cards, Santas and cookies fill the thematic chapters of Merry Christmas! The history of Christmas, as Marling observes promisingly, is in the details.

Americans commonly assume that Christmas endured for centuries as a solemn religious holiday, before being corrupted by consumer capitalism. As early as the 1870s, critics of Christmas were engaging in "breast-beating over soulless American materialism." In 1949, opponents of the holiday's excess launched a crusade to "restore" its "original" character. Billboards, posters and bumper stickers urging Americans to "Put Christ Back into Christmas" were a common sight during the holiday season throughout the 1950s. Like many tales of decline, this Christmas story proves a fable. In colonial America, Christmas was either not celebrated at all (it was actually illegal to celebrate the holiday in many Puritan communities), or an occasion for boisterous, drunken revelry.

In fact nearly all of Americans' Christmas rituals and icons are 19th-century inventions, created to venerate home and family, not the birth of Jesus. Christmas trees, artfully bedecked with ornaments, became the focal point of Americans' Christmas celebrations in the 1850s. Santa Claus became an icon in the 1860s and 1870s, springing from the pen of cartoonist Thomas Nast. Gift-giving became commonplace in the 1870s and 1880s, as more Americans adopted the practice of purchasing inexpensive, factory-made trinkets--"gewgaws" and "gimcracks"--and wrapping the presents to produce surprise. By century's end, Christmas had become a legal holiday in every state, and the year's most eagerly anticipated holiday for millions. In the 1920s, advertisers transformed Santa into a jovial salesman, whose girth and cheerfulness embodied consumer abundance: According to Marling, St. Nick, not that gangly, gaunt Uncle Sam, best personifies America.

As Marling observes, Americans' celebration of Christmas grew along with material abundance and consumer culture, and the department store window, not the Nativity scene, has always furnished the holiday's central icon. "Christmas," she writes, "is all about stores and shopping." Conversely, stores and shopping rely heavily on Christmas. Last year, Americans spent a record $184 billion during the Christmas shopping season (officially, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas), and many retailers depend on Christmas sales for one quarter of their annual revenue.

But Marling is most interesting when she discusses the holiday's paradoxes, which mingle materialism and generosity. Retailers and advertisers deliberately have exploited holidays to encourage consumption, but they have by no means stripped these "holy days" of their deeper meaning altogether. Marling notes that our most materialistic holiday is also ironically "the primary occasion for considering the harsh realities of the world, and those who have no trees and puddings."

As a result, charitable giving to the poor has accompanied the holiday since the 19th century. Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which has ranked among Americans' most beloved Christmas stories since its publication in 1843, offers a largely secular plea on behalf of the less fortunate. Funding charity dinners for the poor at Christmas time became an annual ritual of penance for the well-to-do in American cities in the late 19th century. Wealthy benefactors congratulated themselves for bestowing feasts and presents on their less fortunate neighbors, but could not have failed to recognize the troubling gulf, let alone the connection, between their abundance and others' privation. Christmas' mixture of materialism and charity remains paradoxical to our own day: Each December, as it has since 1912, the New York Timesjuxtaposes full-page advertisements for luxury gifts with small-font reminders urging readers to "Remember the Neediest."

If Christmas provides a "universal memory" for Americans, it is in large part because advertising and celebrating the holiday are so ubiquitous; even Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, railing against the evils on modern technology in his Montana cabin, took time to write Christmas cards to his neighbors each December. Christmas is so omnipresent that many nonbelievers celebrate the holiday, and even members of other faiths cannot altogether ignore it, try as they might. Stephen Nissenbaum, for example, prefaces his own history of the holiday, The Battle for Christmas, with a touching reminiscence of his boyhood memories of Christmas as an outsider growing up in an Orthodox Jewish household.

But surely different groups of Americans have distinct recollections of the holiday. Protestants and Catholics, rich and poor, white, Asian, black and Latino--all have celebrated on December 25, but they have not celebrated alike. Marling's attempt to delineate the diversity of Christmas traditions, a grab-bag chapter on "Somebody Else's Christmas," lumps together Christmas in warm climes, white Northerners' sentimental but patronizing fascination with black Southerners' humble Christmas celebrations in the 19th century, immigrants' Christmas traditions, even Kwanzaa. A more systematic discussion would fulfill Marling's ambition of recasting our understanding of the holiday. And yet, though Merry Christmas! does not completely transform our view of the Christmas we "used to know," it does detail the little gestures and objects that supply the stuff of which Christmases are made.

However, I don't believe Obama meant it in the same way as John Adams... Because all the Founding Fathers had a profound belief in God. And although they felt that there should be separation of State and “Church” they felt strongly that God had to be at the center of government and law, which is evident in their writings, the Constitution and the preambles of all 50 states. John Adams friend and sometimes adversary, Thomas Jefferson, along with the other Founding Fathers chose Christianity and its core beliefs as the foundation of the values for the United States.

In the past 80 years the liberal progressives have worked on spinning and rewriting that history. They have replaced religion with the goals of their movement secular progressivism and replaced God with the heads of their movement, entertainment idols, and the need for "stuff".

For Anyone Who Missed the Fox Special on American Textbooks

Islam is specifically PROMOTED, with much effort to downplay terrorist acts committed by Muslims and heavy propaganda used to convince children that Muslims worldwide are just misunderstood Care Bears, looking for nothing more than hugs, all that suicide bomber, plane hijacking, “Death to America!” stuff just a figment of our collective imagination. Even September 11, an event hardly shrouded by the haze of time, gets a rewrite. In Prentice Hall's textbook on contemporary American history, for instance, the 19 hijackers are not identified as Islamic extremists. Students are left to guess why they did it. Yet Christianity and Judaism is referenced and taught as theory.

The textbooks operate under the assumption that “diversity” means talking about white people as little as possible, while icon-toppling historical figures such as Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and other “dead white males” so that the likes of Spike Lee, Jesse Jackson, and, now, Dr. Utopia can have large sections of textbooks devoted to them.

This is the exact same lunacy that’s afflicted Europe the last 20 years — where countries like France, Great Britain, and the Netherlands have glorified Islam to the point of dhimmihood, so that large parts of London, in particular, are now governed by Sharia law. Dutch and French citizens now live in terror of doing something, anything, that will offend recent Muslim immigrants…lest any of them end up like those who’ve been beheaded in recent years, in WESTERN EUROPE, by Islamists who find affronts to Muhammad in just about everything.

Europe is a weak, crippled, pathetic continent where once mighty societies once stood. It sure doesn’t seem like a coincidence the devolution of Europe coincides perfectly with its catering to all of this PC, pretend everything’s rosey, insist Muslims are Care Bears crap.

Textbook authors literally re-write history to paint Muslims, in particular, in PC-better light…where is the push for this really coming from, and how many people bet it’s the Al-Sayud family in Riyadh…which has spent billions over the last 20-30 years to spread wahabbism throughout the world by any means necessary.

Taking this textbook special in light of Gordon Brown’s push to release the Lockerbie bomber in exchange for Libyan oil sure makes us believe the Muslim members of OPEC have extorted the West to subversively engineer this pro-Muslim PR campaign in exchange for feeding our collective addiction to MidEast crude.

“No oil for you unless you say nicer things about us to your children!”

“No gas for your many cars unless you elect president who will bow to our king and prostrate himself to kiss his bejeweled hand!”

“No peace unless you put us upon pedestal to show what dhimmis you all now are!”

Dr. Utopia’s push to indoctrinate school children into “his Light” on September 8th should be a wakeup call to parents to pay more attention to what their children are being taught in school 8 hours a day, every day, by the government. All those school boards are elected, people. Currently, mostly liberals attend school board meetings…so those school boards tend to be loony liberals of the leftist William Ayers mold.

If moderates and conservatives mounted a years-long effort to take back our schools and install boards who’d fight the Islamization of our curriculums and the re-writing of history in PC-terms, then maybe we can push back against these Alinsky/ACORN radicals before they take permanent hold of young minds and send America down the tubes alongside Europe.

This added to the Obama’s belief’s and the radicals he has surrounded himself with is why parents are worried about President Obama speaking to America’s schoolchildren with pre and post assignments that ask how they can help this President (and his agenda). It is a way of getting himself in the door for bigger programs, bigger involvement and indoctrination.

Hard-edged propaganda now suffuses America's history textbooks. A thorough cover-to-cover reading of almost any high school history text leaves you with the impression that the United States is at best embarrassing, and at worst a menace to world peace. This Friday, Sept. 25, the organizers of “Islam on Capitol Hill” hope to bring thousands of Muslims to Washington, D.C. The program for the “Day of Islamic Unity?”

*The Athan will be chanted on Capitol Hill, echoing off of the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and other great edifices that surround Capitol Hill

*Thousands of Muslims from all races, creeds, colors and ethnicities will gather for the sole purpose of prayer

*Bonds of friendship will be formed between those in attendance, both Muslims and Non-Muslims

*Muslim youth will experience tours of the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court.

*The peace, beauty and solidarity of Islam will shine through America’s capitol.

Who’s behind the event?

Attorney and “main organizer” of “Islam on Capitol Hill”, Hassen Ibn Abdellah is President of the Elizabeth, New Jersey Dar ul-Islam, Inc. Abdellah was, described October 25, 1993 by the New York Times, as the “most aggressively combative of the lawyers” representing the terrorists who staged the 1993 World Trade Center attacks. His client, the Egyptian-born Mahmud Abouhalima, was convicted of helping to manufacture and transport the bomb detonated in the 1993 attack and is now incarcerated in the Federal “Supermax” prison at Florence, Colorado.

In 2004 Abdellah represented Numan Maflahi, a New Jersey Muslim tied to al-Qaeda fundraising. The New York Times July 10, 2004 reported:

Prosecutors said Mr. Maflahi, a gas station owner who lives in Little Ferry, N.J., had been the driver and personal assistant for Sheik Abdullah Satar, a former member of parliament in Yemen. They have described Sheik Satar as a fund-raiser with ties to Al Qaeda.

Yesterday, Mr. Maflahi’s lawyer, Hassen Ibn Abdellah, told Judge Nina Gershon of Federal District Court in Brooklyn that her sentencing decision was a test of whether “this country could be fair to Arab-Americans.”

Five years later, why does the “aggressively combative” Abdellah think his “Time Has Come”? The August 31 Newark Star-Ledger explains: “It was President Obama’s words at his inauguration in January, and then his speech in Egypt in June, that led Abdellah and an area imam, Abdul Malik, to begin discussing the idea….”

Al-Qaida: We Would Use Pakistani Nukes On America

DUBAI — If al-Qaida were in a position to do so, it would use Pakistan's nuclear weapons in its fight against the United States, a top leader of the group said in remarks aired on Sunday.

Pakistan has been battling al-Qaida Taliban allies in the Swat Valley since April after their thrust into a district 60 miles northwest of the capital raised fears the nuclear-armed country could slowly slip into militant hands.

"God willing, the nuclear weapons will not fall into the hands of the Americans and the mujahideen would take them and use them against the Americans," Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, the leader of al-Qaida's in Afghanistan, said in an interview with Al Jazeera television.

Abu al-Yazid was responding to a question about U.S. safeguards to seize control over Pakistan's nuclear weapons in case Islamist fighters came close to doing so.

"We expect that the Pakistani army would be defeated (in Swat) . . . and that would be its end everywhere, God willing."

Asked about the group's plans, the Egyptian militant leader said: "The strategy of the (al-Qaida ) organization in the coming period is the same as in the previous period: to hit the head of the snake, the head of tyranny: the United States.

"That can be achieved through continued work on the open fronts and also by opening new fronts in a manner that achieves the interests of Islam and Muslims and by increasing military operations that drain the enemy financially."

The militant leader suggested that naming a new leader for the group's unit in the Arabian Peninsula, Abu Basir al-Wahayshi, could revive its campaign in Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter.

"Our goals have been the Americans . . . and the oil targets which they are stealing to gain power to strike the mujahideen and Muslims."

"There was a setback in work there for reasons that there is no room to state now, but as of late, efforts have been united and there is unity around a single leader."

Abu al-Yazid, also known as Abu Saeed al-Masri, said al-Qaida will continue "with large scale operations against the enemy" — by which he meant the United States.

"We have demanded and we demand that all branches of al-Qaida carry out such operations," he said, referring to attacks against U.S.-led forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The militant leader said al-Qaida would be willing to accept a truce of about 10 years' duration with the United States if Washington agreed to withdraw its troops from Muslim countries and stopped backing Israel and the pro-Western governments of Muslim nations.

Asked about the whereabouts of al-Qaida's top leaders, he said: "Praise God, sheikh Osama (bin Laden) and sheikh Ayman al-Zawahri are safe from the reach of the enemies, but we would not say where they are; moreover, we do not know where they are, but we're in continuous contact with them."

Christians Unwelcome Here: The Muslim world is becoming more intolerant

As the West continues to reach out to the Muslim world with a message of tolerance, some Muslim communities are growing increasingly intolerant toward people of other faiths. A case in point is Iraq, where Christians are being chased out of their homeland.

New research reported by Associated Press indicates that the number of Christians in Iraq has fallen to between half and one-third of the estimated population of 1.4 million before the first Gulf War. Christians have been fleeing the country after being targeted in sectarian attacks, and most find the general climate increasingly less accommodating. After a series of particularly violent anti-Christian attacks in Mosul last October, leaders of the Catholic Chaldean church and other Christian denominations wrote a protest letter stating that "it seems that Iraq is one step closer to becoming an Islamic state intolerant to non-Muslims."

The Taliban last week threatened Pope Benedict XVI, whom they call "the most important personality in the Christian world," with violence over "stupid and irresponsible acts of proselytism" they contend are being conducted in Afghanistan by "crusader" missionaries. This followed edited footage aired on al-Jazeera that appeared to show the military's top chaplain in Afghanistan, Lt. Col. Gary Hensley, encouraging troops to "hunt people for Jesus." Unedited footage released later showed the chaplain discussing in detail what constituted impermissible proselytizing and cautioning the troops not to cross the line.

For the Taliban, the mere presence of Christians in their country - not to mention Jews, Hindus and others - is anathema. Under current Afghan law - which is under the regime the United States and other Western countries are expending blood and treasure to defend - converting to another religion from Islam is a capital offense. Afghan aid worker Abdul Rahman, who converted to Catholicism, was allowed to flee to Italy after his arrest in 2006 created an international outcry.

During his recent tour of the Middle East, the pope denounced the "ideological manipulation of religion" and called for reconciliation between the various faiths. However, as the West promises, promotes and pleads for diversity, as national leaders travel to the Middle East to offer apologies and seek conciliation and fair play, the region answers them with faith-based apartheid. This is an issue President Obama cannot afford to ignore in his June 4 address to the Muslim world.
