Good friends of ours from here in Elizabethtown, KY just got back home from a visit to the Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs where they attended the commencement exercises of the graduating class of 2013. In fact John's grandson was one of the graduates and John, being a retired US Army officer was able to swear in his grandson as a brand spanking new US Air Force 2Lt.
What an honor that must have been for John and his family, but that's not the real story nor is it the historic significance of the 2013 commencement celebration. You see 2013 is the first Air Force graduation on record that has occurred under a Sequester created by a nonfunctioning Congress and an unyielding Obama Administration. Due to operating under this Sequester the ceremonies proceeded as follows:
President Obama regretfully declined the kind invitation of the Commandant of the Air Force Academy to be speak to the graduates and their families on the occasion of their graduation saying he was committed to addressing the graduates at West Point. Instead it was established that Vice President Biden was free and he would come to Colorado Springs. And, as to the request for the usual fly-over by the US Air Force Thunderbirds that was declined again due to the Sequester.
After consultation with his chain of command the Commandant of the Air Force Academy notified the White House that due to the Sequester cancelling the traditional fly-over of the Thunderbirds that he was confident that the nation didn't need the added $1 million + expense to fly Air Force 2, of any configuration or model, and the added expense of the Secret Service and their entourage required when the Vice President traveled. So just cancel the initial request for a speaker from the White House for the commencement.
So the commencement went off as planned sans representation from the Obama Administration. It looked like this:
The featured speaker was an Under Secretary of the Air Force, who is a decorated Viet Nam veteran. The Secretary flew back and forth from Andrews AFB to Peterson AFB In Colorado Springs on routine training flight conducted by the Air Force thus costing the American tax payers nothing.
John tells me that there were nearly as many Air Force General Officers in attendance as there were family members. He thinks a dozen or more 4 Star General, three or four times as many 2 and 3 Stars an untold number of 1 Star Generals. And, of course countless Colonels and below.
Most of these officers were themselves alumni of the Air Force Academy and wanted nothing less than to present a perfect program for the graduating class. Since the Congress and the Obama Administration could not see fit to allow for a fly-over by the Thunderbirds, a number of the senior generals took matters into their own hands. And so, when the speeches, the hats were all thrown into the air, and all the family hugs were all made and it became time for the fly-over a roar of engines was detected from the West of the air strip and parade grounds there at the facility and everyone was treated to a fly-over by the Confederate Air Force. Looking up they saw all kinds of vintage aircraft from B-17s B-24s, B-25s, P-38s, P-51s and others all represented by manufactures such Corsairs, Grumman, Lockheed and Boeing who still provide parts availability for these aircraft, and flown by our hero's from prior conflicts that still see fit to stay active for services such as this. It was a wonderful experience for all who were there.
I am sure you will join me in offering a salute to these serving officers who saw fit not to rob the 2013 graduating class of their day of celebration, and to our heroes who flew the planes for this worthy occasion and oh yes to the many private donors who pitched in and covered the expenses involved in bringing these aircraft in to Colorado Springs from various locations across the country.
Fury is brewing at Rocky Mountain High School, in Colorado, after a multicultural student group were encouraged to recite the Pledge of Allegiance over the loudspeaker in Arabic - replacing 'one nation under God' with 'one nation under Allah'.
Following Monday's pledge, Principal Tom Lopez has been inundated with complaints from outraged parents concerned that saying the Pledge in any language other than English is unpatriotic.
Standing by his controversial decision, Principal Lopez has said that despite the irate telephone calls and emails, he is not in any way or form trying to push an Islamic agenda at the Fort Collins school.
Rocky Mountain High School in Colorado was hit by controversy on Monday when a student group recited the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic
'These students love this country,' said Lopez to Fox News.
'They were not being un-American in trying to do this. They believed they were accentuating the meaning of the words as spoken regularly in English.'
At the school, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited once a week and on Monday, a member of the Cultural Arms Club at Rocky Mountain High School read out an Arabic version.
The pupils sought the permission of Principal Lopez, who previously had allowed the Pledge to be read out in French and Spanish.
However, the backlash began from students hours after the recital and has continued through the week as angry parents have waded into the controversy.
'We understand not everybody would agree with the students’ choice,' said Danielle Clark, communications director of the Poudre School District to Fox News.

'We’ve heard there are some who are upset.'
Clark said though, that the club has a history of reading the Pledge in different languages and some parents have emailed to say it 'was a great thing'.
And she added that the students had asked permission from the principal.
'We deferred to the students because it’s their deal,' she said to Fox News.
Students at the school rushed to the classmates defense, keen to highlight the motto of the Cultural Arms Club which seeks to 'destroy the barriers, embrace the cultures.'
'No matter what language it’s said in, pledging your allegiance to the United States is the same in every language,' student Skyler Bowden told The Coloradoan.
The issue for some parents and pupils at the school is that in an Arabic translation of the Pledge of Allegiance, 'one nation under God' is replaced with 'one nation under Allah'.

'Obviously in Arabic, you would use the word Allah, but Christian Arabs would use the word Allah,' said Ibrahim Hooper, of the Council on American Islamic Relations.
'It’s not necessarily specific to Islam and Muslims.'
Principal Lopez has borne the brunt of the criticism of the decision to allow the recital - and some have gone as far as to label him as a traitor.
'They claim they are outraged that this is blaspheming a real major tenet of our patriotism – which in their mind the Pledge of Allegiance is only in English,' said Lopez.
Other parents have accused him of 'pushing a Muslim Brotherhood agenda - to push Islam into the school.'

'How on earth is it un-American to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in another language,' said Hooper to Fox News. 'It doesn’t make sense unless the people complaining are anti-Muslim or anti-middle eastern bigots.'
Indeed, the embattled head is becoming wary at the number of complaints and level of abuse he has received. 'I’ve been shocked with prejudicial statements that have been made,' said Lopez.
'I’ve been shocked with the lack of seeking understanding. There’s definitely suspicion and fear expressed in these people’s minds. There’s some hate.'
Lopez says the school is a place of inclusion where one message can be communicated in many different ways.
'When they pledge allegiance to United States, that's exactly what they're saying,' Lopez said. 'They're just using another language as their vehicle,' he said.

Remember when the entire nation was looking for John Doe #2—the suspect that was allegedly with Timothy McVeigh when he rented the Ryder truck used in the Oklahoma City Bombing? But then the FBI deemed John Doe #2 to be a mass hallucination despite dozens of witnesses seeing him (and despite a man being beaten to death for looking like him.)
Well, now we have a mirror image of this case with the Colorado massacre—that is, the complete reverse situation now exists.
There are witnesses who state unequivocally that James Holmes had an accomplice, and both the local Aurora police and feds are ignoring this information. In fact, this now has been confirmed in a search and review of the police dispatch audio in which the police radio traffic state clearly that they believe there may be a second shooter which caused them to surround the adjacent Aurora Town Mall, believing the second suspect had fled the scene. They set up a perimeter and begin the process of an extensive search of each entrance and each internal area, but come up empty.
Alex Jones of InfoWars has discovered a little-known Fox News-affiliate program called “Reality Check” that actually did some real reporting in the Colorado massacre. They interviewed witnesses that stated, without a doubt, that Holmes had an accomplice.
Why this possible second shooter was not discussed in the next day's police press conference, even though it was mentioned by some reporters directly after the shooting, is an anomaly. It is reminiscent of the Oklahoma City bombing, in which for weeks we were told that there was a John Doe #2 who was with Timothy McVeigh when he rented the Budget truck used in the bombing. This was based on literally dozens of witnesses; yet suddenly, the government stated that all of these witnesses were suffering from a mass hallucination.
Was the suspect “James Holmes” transferred to jail and a patsy—someone suffering from mental problems and pumped full of drugs—put forward to take a fall for the real shooter?
Then there is the question of why James Holmes, in police custody, was not divested of any of his tactical gear—specifically the tactical helmet and gas mask—which completely obscured his face. Plus again the question is asked why the college ID photo of James Holmes released the day after the massacre does not match the James Holmes mug shot or the court photos and videos. It is clear that the individuals pictured are different people.
Of course, the question now is: why are the feds and mainstream media burying it?
Of course, the throngs of Lefties calling for more gun control (including our own Community-Organizer-in-Chief Barack Obama) before the victims were even in the ground caused some to wonder if the massacre was allowed to occur—or perhaps even orchestrated—by our own government.
Citing an alleged increase in the use of improvised explosive devices on U.S. soil, including last month’s Colorado massacre, the federal government and members of Congress are pushing for Posse Comitatus to be curtailed and for the U.S. military to work closer with law enforcement in fighting “homegrown terrorists”.
Warning about the “growing threat” of IEDs across the United States, the Pentagon is pushing for Congress to relax Posse Comitatus, which substantially limit the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement unless under precise and extreme circumstances.
Section 1385 of the Posse Comitatus Act states, “Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”
Citing the need for the military to aid police in dealing with IEDs, the Pentagon is ‘complaining’ about “legal restrictions on the activities of U.S. armed forces” within the United States, labeling Posse Comitatus an ‘impediment’ that “some members of Congress are pressing to change,” reports the Houston Chronicle.
House Committee on Homeland Security leaders Reps. Peter King, R-N.Y., Daniel Lungren, R-Calif., and Michael McCaul, R-Austin are leading an effort to amend Posse Comitatus in order to allow Pentagon specialists to coordinate with local law enforcement bodies.
While police being trained by military experts on how to deal with IEDs is unlikely to cause much uproar, the effort to amend Posse Comitatus, widely recognized as a barrier to the imposition of martial law, is guaranteed to stoke controversy, especially given the fact that the federal government now identifies American citizens who uphold constitutional rights as domestic extremists.
“The domestic IED threat from both homegrown terrorists and global threat networks is real and presents a significant security challenge for the United States and our international partners,” Army Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero told Congress in classified testimony.
“Among the recent examples of IED use cited by authorities is that of the Colorado theater shooter, who allegedly rigged his apartment with the device,” reports UPI.
As we saw in a recent study funded by the Department of Homeland Security, these “homegrown terrorists” the military is being brought in to counter are primarily American citizens, not Islamic extremists. According to the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland, Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority,” and “reverent of individual liberty” are to be characterized as “extreme right-wing” terrorists.
Fears that martial law may be imposed to deal with widespread civil unrest in the United States have never been stronger.
As Infowars recently reported, a newly leaked US Army Military Police training manual for “Civil Disturbance Operations” outlines how military assets are to be used domestically to quell riots, confiscate firearms and even kill Americans on U.S. soil during mass civil unrest.
Back in 2008, U.S. troops returning from Iraq were earmarked for “homeland patrols” with one of their roles including helping with “civil unrest and crowd control”.
In December 2008, the Washington Post reported on plans to station 20,000 more U.S. troops inside America for purposes of “domestic security” from September 2011 onwards, an expansion of Northcom’s militarization of the country in preparation for potential civil unrest following a total economic collapse or a mass terror attack.
A report produced that same year by the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Institute warned that the United States may experience massive civil unrest in the wake of a series of crises which it termed “strategic shock.”
“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security,” stated the report, authored by [Ret.] Lt. Col. Nathan Freir, adding that the military may be needed to quell “purposeful domestic resistance”.
In a recent Council on Foreign Relations piece, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, General Raymond T. Odierno advocated for the U.S. Army to be “transitioned” into a more “flexible force” by deploying in situations normally reserved for domestic law enforcement officials.

James Holmes father Robert Holmes, was said to have been scheduled to testify within the next few weeks before a US Senate panel on the massive banking crime called the LIBOR Scandal where UK banks fixed the London Interbank Borrowing Rate with the complicity of the Bank of England, the US Federal Reserve (which knew about this crime for 4 years and didn’t report it) and many other major Western banks.
Not known to the majority of those affected by this LIBOR rate scandal (which is everyone in the world) is that its historically low setting of interests rates since the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2012 has done more to destroy the life savings, stock investments and retirements of Americas middle class than any other single event in their entire history.
Even worse, according to this report, Holmes recently completed his work on what is called one of the most sophisticated computer algorithms ever developed that not only uncovered the true intent of this massive fraud, but is, also, able to trace the Trillions of Dollars “lost” to the exact bank accounts of the elite classes who have stolen it.
This Colorado massacre occurred within minutes of London’s Guardian News Service releasing report this past Saturday (21 July) titled “Wealth Doesn’t trickle Down – It Just Floods Offshore, Research Reveals” as Robert Holmes algorithms were said used to discover this massive fraud scheme.
Equally curious to note about this massacre is that the American intelligence website TheIntelHub.Com in their 23 July article titled “Hallmarks of a False Flag: Colorado University Held Identical Drill on Same Day as Aurora Theater Mass Shooting, Mind Control, and Multiple Suspects” states that just mere hours before this shocking crime was committed the Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine was holding an identical drill that simulated a shooter in a movie theater.
“False flag” events such as the Colorado massacre are actively planned for by the US Army as noted in their training manual titled “Foreign Internal Defense Tactics Techniques and Procedures for Special Forces”. Ben Swann from their WXIX-FOX19 station out of Cincinnati, Ohio, who asks:
“Why did Holmes go to the expense and trouble of rigging his apartment with an array of deadly explosives and then immediately tell police about the bombs when he was arrested? If Holmes wanted to kill as many people as possible, why warn the cops ahead of time?
Given the fact that Holmes was a graduate student in neuroscience, where did he obtain the skills to create a maze of bombs so complex that it took the FBI two days to disarm them? According to experts, the intricacy of the bombs was reminiscent of war zones – how could Holmes have set all this up without help from an explosives expert?
Despite police claiming “every single indicator” tells them the shooting was a lone wolf attack, numerous witnesses have described accomplices. Initial police reports that suggested the involvement of two or more shooters were quickly buried and the lone wolf narrative aggressively pushed.
As Swann points out, eyewitnesses interviewed after the shooting such as Corbin Dates state that Holmes received a phone call from someone while he was inside the theater and responded by moving to the emergency exit, suggesting the call was an accomplice coordinating the attack.
Dates also said he saw Holmes by the exit door “signaling somebody or looking for somebody to come his way.
Another eyewitness added, “From what we saw he wasn’t alone – he had someone with him. Because the second can of tear gas didn’t come from his side.”
The real James Holmes apparently has been abducted (compare photos) to force FICO crime scientist Robert Holmes to not testify in LIBOR scandal — his expertise as scientific director at FICO investigating fraud by statistical patterns and expert in credit scoring analysis - The real James Holmes is on the right. This imposter is on assignment and somehow has been assured of protection and is a pure sociopath earning a buck. If the real James Holmes has been taken then his parents, of course, know it. James’ father is a mathematician/statistician who works for FICO which scores our credit using among other things the inter-bank interest rate set by LIBOR. FICO is the eyes, the intelligence of lenders in discriminating among potential borrowers as risks. James Holmes was the lead developer of FICO’s fraud manager system for financial institutions. The LIBOR scandal which involves the biggest and most powerful merchant banking houses in the City of London is in the midst of the biggest fraud scandal in history. Here is money and motive enough to make conceivable a black-operation on the scale of the James Holmes frame-up.
The bankers are major criminals and have been for sometime. They are criminals with trillions at their disposal. They control all strategic institutions of probably all major governments or are working towards that end. They need to know that no man in law enforcement or fraud detection can harm them, and so they have prepared means of intervening to prevent — by murder, blackmail, intimidation, bribery or psychological manipulation by methods developed in secret by the former Soviet Union, China, Israel and the officially denied equally unrestrained CIA and also mercenary intelligence and espionage services retained by high financial organized crime. What I am driving at is that operations like this may be on stand-by for any fraud investigator or honest politician or financial expert the banks legitimately employ. James Holmes may have been targeted early as the handle by which to control Robert Holmes if that is necessary.
Robert Holmes knows which of these to is his son and which is not. Not only is the arm of the international banking crime syndicate (the “Jewish Mafia”) able to reach out and stop investigating statistician-mathematician -operations-analysis fraud investigators like Robert Holmes - they are also, very easily, able to keep police and defense attorneys from following the right lines of evidence. The resources to intimidate or bribe or otherwise control person after person to prevent an outcome or to force an outcome certainly exists, certainly is part of the defensive equipment of the most powerful criminal syndicate the world has seen.
The only defense the people have against the banking crime families is for the public to spread the word and all as one speak with a unified voice of public opinion. But of course the bankers can thwart that, as they have with 9-11, with the economic depression, with countless other crimes too big and too amazing even to believe when they are all listed on one page. (for example, weaponized weather modification and the ability to take control of planes. The fact that the prisoner in the Aurora shooting is not James Holmes. That a crime this elaborate and expensive could only be performed in the interests of the most powerful people on the planet — and they are the international bankers to whom this one country owe 14 trillion dollars — a good portion of which figure was determined by fraudulent manipulations of the LIBOR (inter-bank exchange rate) which has been set to favor the bankers rather than to reflect currently obtaining lending market conditions as it is represented as doing. This crime could spell the end of the international bankers — and that is why they went to such lengths to kidnap James Holmes and substitute this mass-murdering imposter in his place — and who we may shortly be hearing killed himself — I can’t see how they can let him go on public trial, or appear with his hair dyed back to its original color.
Holmes father: Robert went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Stanford, a master’s in biostatistics at UCLA, and a doctorate in statistics at the University of California at Berkeley in 1981. His doctoral thesis was titled “Contributions to the Theory of Parametric Estimation in Randomly Censored Data.” He subsequently authored studies for the Navy and the Marine Corps on how to forecast personnel changes using something called “tree classifications,” the trees in question being statistical. Eventually, reports say, he signed on as a low-six-figure-a-year senior scientist with FICO, which produces management systems, fraud protection, and credit scores.

Let’s not call the Aurora shooting a tragedy. A tragedy is a car wreck that kills a family; a tragedy is a derailed train that poisons a town; a tragedy is a plane crash killing all on board. That’s not what Thursday’s monstrous act was – it was a massacre, it was an outrage. Some loony, nut case picked a gun-free zone where the pickings were easy. He didn’t “snap” – he planned it for months. That’s what gun-free zones do to Americans – they make them sitting ducks. 71 shot and 12 dead – if his gun hadn’t jammed, it could have been a lot worse – Doug Giles gets it right:
As the news starting pouring in about what happened in the theater this week when Satan’s spawn James Holmes donned Kevlar and a small battery of weapons and opened fire on an unsuspecting crowd, I kept thinking, “One fast-thinking and trained person who was armed/licensed with a concealed weapon could have stopped that SOB right in his tracks before the body count skyrocketed.”
Every time one of these massacres goes down I keep thinking “what if a guy or girl with a concealed weapon would have been there?” What happened in Aurora last night is why I carry one of my pistols everywhere, I mean everywhere, I go.
James Egan Holmes is a 24 year-old mass-murdering asshat from San Diego who is a recently dropped out neuroscience student. He is on unemployment. Some are saying he is a Black Bloc anarchist and tied to the OWS movement – I have seen no solid proof of that yet. I won’t go there and point fingers without proof as ABC did to the Tea Party.
Somehow miraculously, he was able to purchase an up-market AR15 (an M&P Smith and Wesson which retails for an average of $1500 give or take), a 40 caliber pistol (model unknown, said to be a Glock which the base model retails for $600), a shotgun (model unknown – approx. $400), a modestly priced bullet resistant vest (about $200), a gas mask (about $75) and some 6,000 rounds of ammo (estimated ammo cost around $2500). He also had smoke grenades (cost unknown, type and manufacturer unknown). How does someone on unemployment and broke afford all this, even with easy credit? Well, it looks like he got a grant and used it. It’s estimated in total, with 30 homemade grenades and other assorted explosives, Holmes spent between 10 and 15k on this stuff.
I have more and more questions… We heard this morning he applied for membership at a gun range – Lead Valley Range in Byers – and was red flagged a month previously. Yep, I know the guy was a genius and (as it happens) insane. I know his mom said that the police had the right guy, indicating that she had reason to believe that he was at least somewhat disturbed. But even if you knew your son was disturbed, is that a normal response for a mother? Before knowing everything? Yes, I know he has a Batman obsession and fancies himself The Joker. There are striking similarities between this brazen slaughter and a Batman comic from many years ago that featured The Joker shooting up a theater. But what I want to know is why after killing so many with so much chaos in play, did he calmly wait for the police to arrive? He could have escaped or committed suicide, but instead he just waited. Why did he rig his apartment to kill police who would investigate him and then tell them he did so? I want to know if someone let him in the theater and helped him. We may never know, but it also seems highly coincidental to me that this took place just as the Arms Treaty was being hashed out which endangers our Second Amendment right to bear arms.
And then comes the gun foes, like the worst mayor in America, New York’s very own Michael Bloomberg, who demanded to hear from both candidates on how they stood on the issue and then proceeded to push for massive gun control. The Washington Post said there was no sane reason for people to own what they dub ‘assault’ rifles. They were followed by The New York Times and The Huffington Post – all progressive publications that want to infringe on our rights and push their Marxist claptrap down our throats. Others followed: CBS, CNN talk show host Piers Morgan, Larry King, Arianna Huffington, Salman Rushdie and of course Dianne Feinstein. And our neighbors to the south – Mexico – are leading the pack at the Arms Treaty summit, acting as surrogates for Obama and pushing for massive gun control. Because you know, only criminals would then have guns, just like they do in Mexico.
In the end, sane people realize that it isn’t specifically the guns that are killing so many, it’s the evil, immoral assholes who use them. And if it wasn’t guns, it would be knives, bombs, poison or some other clever way of taking people out. The answer isn’t fewer guns, it’s fewer laws and MORE freedom to carry weapons for your protection. I guarantee you that if this dirt bag had thought there were armed people in there, he wouldn’t have tried it.
I can’t watch all this vulturism on the news. I grieve and pray for the families devastated by this terrorism. I weep for the 6 year old who was gunned down and for the three men who died protecting their girlfriends. I mourn for all of them. There is no good to be found here, none at all.
It hasn’t been that many months since I observed the increasing frenzy of poorly veiled encouragement toward violence by hard Left agitators, and my opinion at the time was that these people were hoping for violence, though I prayed they would be denied. I didn’t get my wish, instead they got theirs. A message received this afternoon from someone close to the California legislature reports that the jackals there were doing more than “hoping” for a violent event — they’ve had pre-written bills awaiting just such an event to provide the plausible cause to “ride to the rescue” yet again, imposing even harsher restrictions on the tools of self defense. Time to get out of California – seriously.
I wonder what has become of our country where this type of slaughter has become increasingly commonplace. Where we have evil leaders pushing Marxism on us and actively destroying America and her heritage. This is what is spawning this type of anarchist behavior. An Arapahoe County Court judge has granted a request to seal the case against James Holmes, the 24-year-old shooter who killed 12 and wounded 50 during a screening last night of "The Dark Knight Rises."
The motion, filed in Arapahoe County court, asks for the records in the case to be sealed, including search warrants, affidavits, orders and the "case file."
… disclosure of the court records would be "contrary to public interest" and "could jeopardize the ongoing investigation." – Really?
There is nothing in sealing this case that is a positive for the American people!
It appears the FBI attempted to remove from the Internet a warning from 2-months ago that theaters would be attacked

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will fly to Colorado on Sunday to visit with the families of victims of the Aurora movie theater shooting, the White House announced, as he and Mitt Romney dialed back their campaigning in the shocked aftermath of the massacre.
White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer disclosed plans for the visit Saturday night. Aides said Obama's stop would also include meetings with state and local officials.
Friday's deadly rampage briefly silenced the acrimonious presidential contest, with both campaigns cutting short schedules and pulling advertising in Colorado out of respect for the dead and injured.
But for Obama, the pause was to be short-lived. After his Colorado visit, he was to fly Reno, Nev., for a Monday speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, followed by a series of campaign fundraisers in California, Oregon and Washington state. Romney is also expected to speak to the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday.
Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection — for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."
The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."
The White House said Obama received updates Saturday from John Brennan, his homeland security adviser, on the investigation into the shooting and the attempts by authorities to gain access to the suspect's apparently booby-trapped apartment.
Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.
The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.
Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shooting occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shooting served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."
"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."
Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."
"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.
Other prominent lawmakers called the shooting a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.
"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.
Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shooting could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.
As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.
Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."
Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.
But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.
"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.
Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.
"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

As many as 12 14 people were killed and 50 nearly 80 injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. early Friday during the showing of the latest Batman movie. (In a matter of 5 minutes I heard 12,13,14 and again 12 dead on 4 different TV stations and equally varying numbers from 59 to 79 people wounded, so for now I’ll stop adjusting the number for the number is not the issue.)
Gun Rights Do you know where the world's most heavily armed population resides? No, it's not the United States, but Switzerland. In Switzerland there is also a thriving gun culture (shooting contests for children ages 12 to 16 are quite popular) and one of the world's lowest crime rates. There are firearms in every household, and the heads of households are trained on how to use them. In 1997, Switzerland had 1.2 murders per 100,000 - about the same as Great Britain, which is often touted as a gun-control success story. Since this fact disproves their theory that guns cause crime, the gun control movement typically does not address it.
Gun Confiscation On the other side of the coin, we have Australia. Throughout history, Australia has really never had a major problem with violent crime even though gun ownership is commonplace. Until April 28th 1996, when a lunatic shot 35 people in Port Arthur. An anti-gun uproar appeared immediately (even though guns have never been a problem in the past) and a law was passed making it a felony to possess semi-automatic firearms, even those used for hunting. The government confiscated these firearms from law abiding citizens, and these guns (in some cases rare collectibles) were destroyed. Gun Control and left-wing politicians said great things about the new law and anticipated a drop in crime.
As common sense would dictate, just the opposite occurred. In 1997, (12 months after the new laws went into effect) homicides jumped 3.2 percent, armed robberies were up a whopping 44 percent, assaults up 8.6 and there was a 300% increase in homicides in the state of Victoria. Prior to the new anti-gun laws, statistics showed a steady decrease in armed robberies with firearms; now, there has been a dramatic increase in break-ins, especially against the elderly.
In 1998, in the state of South Australia, robbery with a firearm increased nearly 60 percent. In 1999, new figures reveal that the assault rates in the state of NSW has risen almost 20 percent. In fact, Great Britain has surpassed America in its overall rate of violent crime (per 100,000 residents). I'm not going to beat a dead horse here and explain why this happened, but you can put two and two together and figure it out. Hint: You can bet the armed criminals did not turn in their weapons...

Another scenario that proves the efficacy of open carry and licensed gun ownership is Arizona's open carry law. Since Arizona passed the open carry law which enables any law abiding citizen to carry a weapon on their hip without a permit, the violent crime rate has plummeted. Imagine that? When criminals become aware that the guy or gal standing next to them has a Glock on their hip, they will think twice about doing something stupid. The problem with Liberal Colorado is that there are too many restrictions on guns. I would go so far as to say if they were to pass a law identical to Arizona's, the jails would become empty and the violent crime rate would drop dramatically.
