After 40 years, Washington is quietly giving up on a futile battle that has spread corruption and destroyed thousands of lives

During the 2008 Primaries, Ron Paul campaigned on "Ending the War on Drugs". As we all know, anyone who even suggests this is laughed at, ridiculed, and attacked by Lame Stream Media and those who are making Billions and Billions off UNICOR Prison Industries here in the United States of America. Not to mention that we now have the largest Prison Population in the world.

Well, today I read this article in The Independent World.co.uk news.

US waves white flag in disastrous 'war on drugs'

By Hugh O'Shaughnessy
Sunday, 17 January 2010

Prepare to shed a tear over the loss of revenue that eventual decriminalization of narcotics could bring to the traffickers, large and small, and to the contractors who have been making good money building and running the new prisons that help to bankrupt governments – in the US in particular, where drug offenders – principally small retailers and seldom the rich and important wholesalers – have helped to push the prison population to 1,600,000; their imprisonment is already straining federal and state budgets. In Mississippi, where drug offenders once had to serve 85 per cent of their sentences, they are now being required to serve less than a quarter. California has been ordered to release 40,000 inmates because its prisons are hugely overcrowded.
The quiet expiry of the "war" has dawned slowly on a world focused on the US's more palpable conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Last month, the US House of Representatives gave unanimous approval to a bill creating an independent commission to reconsider domestic and international drug policies and suggest better ones.

Congressman Engel, a Democrat from the Bronx and the sponsor of the bill, declared: "Billions upon billions of US taxpayer dollars have been spent over the years to combat the drug trade in Latin America and the Caribbean. In spite of our efforts, the positive results are few and far between."

Evidence points to aircraft – familiarly known as "torture taxis" – used by the CIA to move captives seized in its kidnapping or "extraordinary rendition" operations through Gatwick and other airports in the EU being simultaneously used for drug distribution in the Western hemisphere. A Gulfstream II jet aircraft N9875A identified by the British Government and the European Parliament as being involved in this traffic crashed in Mexico in September 2008 while en route from Colombia to the US with a load of more than three tons of cocaine.

In 2004, another torture taxi crashed in a field in Nicaragua with a ton of cocaine aboard. It had been identified by Britain and the European Parliament's temporary committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners as a frequent visitor in 2004 and 2005 to British, Cypriot, Czech, German, Greek, Hungarian, Spanish and other European cities with its cargo of captives for secret imprisonment and torture in Iraq, Jordan and Azerbaijan. clip_image001 The name of the book Obama is reading is called The Post-American World, written by a fellow Muslim. Post-America - The world After America ???

Please share this picture to everyone you know, conservative or liberal to expose Obama's radical ideas and intent for this country!

Brazil announced this week that they will be implementing a 2% tax on fixed-income and equity purchases by foreign investors in an attempt to curb the appreciation of the Brazilian real, which is up 32% this year against the U.S. dollar. Brazil is trying to deter foreign investors from investing into their country, in an attempt to artificially prop up the U.S. dollar.

It is completely absurd for Brazil to care so much about having the ability to export their products to Americans who can't afford them. They should be allowing the real to appreciate in value so that their citizens can enjoy an increased standard of living. The only people who will benefit from Brazil's actions are those who own exporting companies in Brazil. The overwhelming majority of the people in Brazil will suffer, as the country will likely continue adding to their $231.5 billion in U.S. dollar reserves that will eventually be completely worthless.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said this week that the U.S. should cut down on its budget deficit in order to reduce global imbalances. This is hypocritical, as it's Bernanke who is allowing the U.S. to have such huge budget deficits by monetizing our government's spending. Bernanke is the only person with the power to put a stop to the madness, but in his campaign to get reappointed, he most likely promised everybody in Washington that he would continue monetizing their spending in the future.

Bernanke continues to claim that the recession is over and the financial crisis is behind us, but the global imbalances he admits we still need to correct are getting more out of control than ever.

Consumer spending now accounts for 71% of the U.S. GDP, well above the long-term average of 65%. If global imbalances were to correct, we would need the consumer spending portion of GDP to overcorrect down to below 60% for an extended period of time. This would certainly put the U.S. in a very deep recession, but only then would our economy have a real chance of truly becoming healthy.

After the U.S. financial markets collapsed in late-2008/early-2009, we saw the U.S. personal savings rate triple to a high in May of 6.2%. This was a step in the right direction but it didn't last for long.

The savings rate has since then fallen three months in a row back down to 3%. Any progress that was made has been lost. The imbalances are growing to new extremes that will eventually result in complete economic chaos and hyperinflation. Our only chance to rein in the imbalances before they do irreparable harm is to follow in the footsteps of the Reserve Bank of Australia and dramatically raise interest rates immediately.

Many so-called financial experts and stock analysts on CNBC have been proclaiming the rapidly declining U.S. dollar to be good for the U.S. economy, because it will boost our exports. We need to increase exports, but our country doesn't produce enough products to export. In order to increase the manufacturing of products to export, we need to increase savings. Without savings, it is impossible to build new factories. A falling U.S. dollar discourages Americans from saving and destroys the value of savings.

A declining U.S. dollar is bad for all Americans. Oil prices are now back above $80 per barrel; gas prices will inevitably rise back above $4 per gallon. Last time gas rose above $4 per gallon, Congress held countless hearings trying to figure out why oil prices were rising, when in fact they were the ones causing it. Congress's deficit spending and Bernanke's willingness to monetize it creates the inflation that drives oil prices up. Let's see if they figure it out this time, or if they once again place the blame on speculators and the free-market.

Obama's Plan to Change U.S. Health Care System Will Cost Nearly Two TRILLON Dollars

The latest cost estimates for health care legislation in Congress are about $1.6 trillion over 10 years, according to two Senate sources.

Two Senate staffers, one Democratic and one Republican, said the Congressional Budget Office made the estimate for the Finance Committee version of the bill. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee version would cost $1 trillion over ten years, but would only cover about one-third of the nearly 50 million uninsured.

The staffers who disclosed the latest estimates spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of negotiations over the legislation.

A Finance Committee Democratic aide, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated committee members are working to lower the cost to less than $1 trillion over 10 years, a level preferred by the Obama administration.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Health care reform is finally on the table, but there’s little agreement about the cure for the current system. And, if you ask me, it appears that what the public really wants, and what the government is willing to consider are two different animals.

Health care as a cash cow may simply be too deeply entrenched in the consciousness of the industry and their paid lackeys to be able to provide what people want: healthier and more inexpensive options, and the freedom to choose; to have alternatives to dangerous prescription drugs and unnecessary surgeries.

In the video above, Congressman Ron Paul, who is also an M.D., gives his perspective on the past and future of medicine in the U.S., and the effects of government and special interests on quality, costs and access.

Big Pharma, Big Business, Big Disaster

One of the problems in our current system, he says, is the lack of competition, partly due to too much government intervention.

I would agree with that sentiment, and add that not only do we lack competition within the allopathic field, but we also lack true competition between the allopathic and alternative medicine fields. True competition will only occur once alternative medicine is embraced and fully allowed to BE an officially viable alternative to conventional treatments.

As it stands now, recent media coverage has shown you just how dire your situation can get if you dare refuse conventional medical treatment and opt for other less dangerous alternatives.

A recent slew of articles also indicate there might be an organized campaign underway to undermine the validity and effectiveness of alternative medicine in the mind of the public.

And doctors are intimidated beyond reason to fall in line with pharmaceutical cartels’ agenda.

Is it any wonder that we’re fighting an uphill battle?

Not really, because as I’ll show you a bit later in this article, Big Pharma is at the very core of this mess, and so far no one is addressing the underlying paradigm that is the crux of our current health care problem.

Why are U.S. Health Care Costs so High?

If you didn’t already know this, American medical care is the most expensive in the world. The U.S. spends more than twice as much on each person for health care as most other industrialized countries. And yet it has fallen to last place among those countries in preventing avoidable deaths through use of timely and effective medical care.

That the system is fatally flawed and in need of a radical overhaul is self-evident.

According to a 2008 report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 90 percent of Americans believe our medical system should be “completely rebuilt” or that “fundamental changes” are required.

A recent article on the WIP.net web site points out numerous reasons why health care costs have run amok. One major problem that is inflating costs is the staggering number of medically unwarranted surgeries being performed each year.

Topping the list of the most over-utilized surgeries in the U.S. are cesarean sections and hysterectomies.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 31 percent of the 4.3 million births in 2006 were surgical, at a price tag of anywhere between $2,000 and $200,000 each. Planned cesarean births cost an average 76 percent more than a vaginal birth, according to a 2007 report published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

And the rate of hysterectomies in America is nothing short of appalling.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of American women have had their female organs removed by the age of 60.

By the age of 65, HALF of all women have had a hysterectomy!

But that’s not the most shocking part of the statistics. In her WIP article, Nora Coffey states:

“Findings from more than 850,000 counseling sessions at the HERS Foundation in Philadelphia puts the percentage of hysterectomies that could be avoided with conservative treatment (or no treatment at all) at about 98 percent.”

More than $17 billion a year is spent on direct doctor and hospital charges for hysterectomies – most of which are completely unnecessary!

Clearly, unwarranted surgical interventions are costing tax payers billions of dollars each year, in the form of Medicare/Medicaid payouts or higher insurance premiums.

Who benefits?

Doctors and hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies, of course.

Are YOU Ready to Root Out the Driving Force Behind Skyrocketing Costs and Falling Health Statistics?

The truth is that the terrible health statistics of the U.S. are primarily caused by the drug cartel and the food industry. Worse yet, it’s not by accident, nor by ignorant oversight, which is why no politician will likely ever be able to fix it.

The drug industry has been able to manipulate and control the U.S. Congress to pass just about any and every law they need to increase their profits. Once you understand how they control the government, you realize how they are diverting hundreds of billions of dollars for their hyperinflated drug prices. This money goes into their own pockets and has nothing to do with making you healthier.

There is NO PILL that can make you healthier! They can only mask symptoms, and more often than not cause additional health problems.

It is this diversion of funding that is the primary reason why American health is so poor. If these funds were spent wisely and not used for products that don’t work and that aren’t safe, there is no doubt in my mind the United States would lead the world in health stats.

So, the question I ask myself when I watch this ongoing drama with politicians squabbling over private- versus government-funded health care insurance plans is:

Will Any Of The Options On The Table Fix The Underlying Problem?

Will a government-sponsored health plan reduce the number of unnecessary prescriptions? Will there be fewer unwarranted surgeries? Will it reduce costs by focusing on prevention, and offering less dangerous and more inexpensive alternatives?

I believe the answer is no.

The focus is still on allopathic medicine; the ability for everyone to afford its conventional therapies and treatment protocols.

So whether a public health care plan is a good idea or not is almost beside the point, because what we REALLY need is a radical change in consciousness about what health and health care really is.

As long as the focus of our health care is on drugs and surgical interventions, we will never see the fundamental changes that are so desperately needed.

No politician will be able to accomplish this feat, so sitting around waiting for it is futile. It can only be done by YOU changing how you think about health care and your health.

It can only be accomplished one person at a time, until so many people refuse the unnecessarily dangerous and counterproductive solutions currently offered by conventional medicine that there will be no option left but for the system to change to your will.

But we cannot dawdle too long.

Some are already blowing their warning trumpets, showing why, when it comes to demanding health care insurance coverage for all, you should be careful what you ask for.

A Natural Health Line article by Peter Chowka reads:

we have a date for the official end of alternative medicine, and for the medical freedom on which alternative medicine is based: October 2009.

On June 12, 2009, the U.S. press reported that President Obama wants a universal health care bill on his desk by next October. The Democrats in Congress are promising to give it to him. Not only will such legislation unalterably change the practice of medicine (including exponentially expanding the role of the anti-alt med federal government), it will force all Americans to carry conventional allopathic medical insurance, whether they want it or not.

Now, consider that alternative medicine has been able to grow and thrive in recent decades because people have had the ability and choice to pay for it themselves, almost exclusively out of their own pockets. Many people who are of independent mind and who are better educated have chosen not to invest in conventional medicine, including bloated insurance for medical care they don’t want.

Instead, they often direct their personal resources to healthy lifestyles and primary prevention (such as organic food, nutritional supplements, etc.) and to non-toxic, traditional, unconventional, or alternative treatments.

When all Americans (except those who can prove poverty to a government apparatchik) will be required to pay thousands of dollars annually for allopathic insurance, the ability to choose alternatives will be severely if not totally impaired.”

This scenario may become the unfortunate reality for many, and makes universal health care coverage part of the problem, not part of the solution.

I agree with Congressman Ron Paul in that health insurance should be for major emergencies only. It doesn’t need to be the sole route for every problem, which is turning out to be a financial catastrophe.

If You Demand It, They Will Follow

Doctors, that is.

It’s very easy to cast blame on doctors. After all, medical errors are the leading cause of death in the U.S.

However, whether or not doctors succeed in upholding the Hippocratic Oath – the promise to Do No Harm – is not always entirely in their own hands.

The conventional medical system is simply not designed to give them that freedom. It’s VITAL that you understand that regardless of their personal opinions, many times they’re simply not allowed to offer you any other alternatives than what the “standard protocol” demands.

Unfortunately, that does place a certain amount of responsibility onto you, the patient. Because although there may be much safer means to help with your ailment, if you go to a conventional physician, he or she is likely not going to tell you about them unless you ask, and ask in an appropriate way. This previous article highlights this issue and offers guidance on how you can best work WITH your doctor to get the best care.

Medical Doctors are Leaving the Profession in Droves

The fact that many American doctors are as fed up with (and victims of) the system as you are, is evident by the fact that:

  • One U.S. physician commits suicide each day. On the average, death by suicide is about 70 percent more likely among male physicians than among other professionals, and 250 percent to 400 percent higher among female physicians
  • Half of all physicians want to quit practicing three years after receiving their degrees

Why do so many doctors want out?

One major factor is “factory medicine” and the subsequent loss of autonomy to make the best decisions for each patient on a case-by-case basis, as discussed by Dr. Pamela Wible in the July issue of Spirituality & Health Magazine.

Based on her own frustration with the system, followed by depression and wanting to quit, she developed a brand new community-based health care clinic that includes what her community said they wanted from “the clinic of their dreams.” (To read more about this pioneering doctor, who took matters into her own hands rather than giving up, please see her website.)

She believes many doctors are literally dying to be allowed to truly care for their patients in a space of cooperation and trust.

Nearly every available index shows that the current multitrillion dollar investment in disease-care is a miserable failure.

Isn’t it time to realize that some of the best ways to improve your health are very inexpensive? Some are even free. And leave major medical insurance for actual emergencies.

Hoover and FDR

It seems as though history continues to repeat itself. During the first 'great depression,' Herbert Hoover was President at the outset. He instigated the things FDR would later enlarge upon, none of which worked. Now we are in the beginning of the second 'great depression,' and it's almost exactly the same scenario. George Bush started the plunge downhill with his $720 billion TARP nonsense, which most of the Republicans voted for, including John McCain, but not of course, Ron Paul. Now, with Obama as President, he is enlarging the things Bush started, just as FDR enlarged the things Hoover began, and history is repeating itself. Now, instead of $720 billion, it's said that it will be $10 trillion before it's over, and I hope being "over" doesn't mean the entire US economy, but it might well be. As in the days of Hoover and FDR, none of the 'stimulus' worked, as it still won't. Henry Morgenthau, FDR's Secretary of the Treasury, said that all the spending "hasn't worked," and he was correct. It took WW II to get us out of the first great depression, and we can pray that it won't take the same to get us out of the second great depression.

One big difference, as I have written before, is that during the Hoover-FDR first great depression, there was absolutely no inflation. None. Why? Because the dollar was backed by gold! It was illegal to print trillions of paper dollars during the first great depression. That's why FDR tried to get everyone to turn in their gold. He could then spend more gold-backed dollars. Also, there were no credit cards, no interstate roads, and virtually no air travel. Stocks were being sold with little or no down payment, just as homes were being sold for the same requirements during the second great depression. During the first great depression, there were no trillion-dollar credit card debts. During the first great depression, stocks plunged as they have done now, but perhaps a little bit further. Then, there was no PPT or plunge protection team to keep the stock market artificially high; and you can bet your bottom dollar that the PPT has been busy of late.

Speaking of stocks, can anyone give me a reason why they have gone up a thousand points, other than the PPT? 650,000 or more each week are getting laid off, businesses by the thousands go bankrupt or close each week, prompting even more layoffs, and the chain reaction continues. One of my clients says that stocks are going up because during a hyperinflation, everything goes up, and that is a good point, but there are no profits anywhere, so I think that argument my not be totally true. I honestly do believe that gold and the Dow will cross eventually, with the Dow on its way down and gold on its way up. Gold and silver will NEVER go to zero like paper assets (sic) can and have done and will continue to do. With hyper inflation, gold and silver will be made to go up even further than other prices, I believe, because more and more people are seeing the beauty of tangible beautiful, historic money, in the form of gold and silver, and there is only so much of it out there. As it becomes more and more difficult to get, due to increased demand, prices of metals will have to go sky high in dollars.

We drove over 3200 miles the week before last, mostly in Texas, and going to and from there. The Blue Bonnets are out and beautiful, but even in Texas, the economy isn't good at all. While Texas houses haven't plunged like Las Vegas, California, and Florida, it's because they never got that high in the first place. Still, layoffs are plentiful, and tourism, motels, and other non-essentials are hurting...even in Texas. Closed auto dealerships are plentiful, and in one wonderful German restaurant, which used to have people waiting around the block on a Friday evening, we were seated instantly. The second great depression is going to leave an unemployment rate of close to 20% before it's over and all the spending and bailouts are merely postponing the inevitable, and making it worse with hyperinflation. The term "trillion" was unheard of a couple of years ago, as far as deficits are concerned, and now that term is thrown around like penny candy at a fair 50 years ago.

I don't believe in fixes and I've said so repeatedly. Sometimes the piper has to be paid. Whiskey credo number three: Sometimes there is no forgiveness, only punishment.

The megalopolis and its populations are going to melt back into town and country. The ravages of private and public debt won't be avoided...especially not by more private and public debt.
I wouldn't do a damned thing to "fix" this. I'd let it play out because tampering would only make the outcome worse in the end. Alas, most of the world and all those in power believe that there is a way to wiggle out of this mess...so tamper they will.

Prepare yourselves as best you can It's going to get more and more interesting...

Regards,
Gary Gibson
Managing Editor, Whiskey & Gunpowder

And BTW… It really is time to stop blaming Bush…  The difference between $720 Billion and almost $11 Trillion is staggering, and when Obama came to office only half the TARP money was spent.  Obama and the present Democratic Congress own this present problem!!

The U.S. Government needs to stop this crazy spending…  And remember, those that do not know and understand history are destined to repeat it… and repeat it… and repeat it!!

Meltdown - Personal Note From Ron Paul

"There is no better book to read on the present crisis."

Many Americans are looking to the new administration to solve our economic problems. Unfortunately, that is probably a vain hope. Although we were promised "change," we are only getting a continuation of the same superficial economic fixes that have damaged so many economies in the past, and that will only delay the return of prosperity.

These fixes are based on the false belief that the free-market economy has failed. But it is not the market that has failed. It is intervention into the market that has failed. The Federal Reserve and its manipulation of money and interest rates have failed. None of this can be blamed on the free market.

That's why Meltdown, a New York Times bestseller, is so important. This book actually gets things right. It correctly identifies our problems, their causes, and what we should do about them. It treats the architects of this debacle not with the undeserved reverence they receive in Washington and on television, but with the critical eye that is so conspicuously missing from our supposedly independent thinkers in academia and the media.

In a short span, Tom introduces the layman to a range of subjects that have been excluded from our national discussion for much too long. Among many other things, Tom explains Austrian business cycle theory, which he correctly identifies as the single most important piece of economic knowledge for Americans to have right now. In so doing, Tom provides Americans with the most persuasive and rational account of how we got here. Only if we correctly assess the causes of the debacle can we hope to propose a path to recovery that might actually work and not simply prolong the agony.

Our years of living beyond our means, of buying everything on credit and on money printed out of thin air, are over. Sure, our government will carry on with its nonsensical policy of curing indebtedness with more indebtedness, inflation with more inflation, but the game is up. It's not going to work. The resources aren't there. The more we intervene and the more we prop up economic zombies, the worse off we'll be. But the sooner we understand what has happened, assess our economic situation honestly, and rebuild our economy on a sound foundation, the sooner our fortunes will be restored.

Ideas still matter, and sound economic education has rarely been as urgently necessary as it is today. There is no better book to read on the present crisis than this one, and that is why I am delighted to endorse it.

Sincerely,  Rep. Ron Paul
