Help us stop this EVIL law!

Mike Huckabee

Dear Conservative Friend,

In July 2007, Barack Obama promised a group of his supporters that, if elected president, he would sign perhaps the most evil piece of legislation in the history of our republic.

It's called the "Freedom of Choice Act," or FOCA -- but don't let the Orwellian title fool you. It isn't about "freedom" or "choice" at all. It's about forcing each and every American citizen -- regardless of his or her view on abortion -- to support abortion-on-demand not just as a "fundamental right" but as a taxpayer-funded entitlement.

But the compulsion wouldn't stop there. Because FOCA would also run roughshod over the conscience rights of doctors, nurses, and hospitals that oppose abortion on religious or moral grounds -- forcing them to provide or counsel for abortion or face professional de-certification, loss of funding, lawsuits, and even prosecution.

Not only that, FOCA would immediately strike down any and all state restrictions on abortion -- even those with wide popular support, such as prohibitions on partial-birth abortion and parental notification requirements for minors seeking abortions.

Make no mistake: FOCA is the most radical piece of pro-abortion legislation ever proposed, one that would go far beyond Roe v. Wade in making abortion a government-protected and taxpayer-supported "right," through all nine months of pregnancy.

That's why I'm asking you today to support HUMAN EVENTS in its efforts to stop this outrageous piece of legislation before it ever reaches President Obama's desk.

Let me explain why this is possible -- and how HUMAN EVENTS plans to do it...

You see, in his 2007 campaign pledge to Planned Parenthood members, Obama promised that signing FOCA would be "the first thing I'd do as president." The only reason he hasn't followed through on that promise is that Democratic-controlled Congress has yet to introduce and pass it.

Why the delay? For one thing, they've had bigger fish to fry -- such as trillion-dollar "stimulus" packages and a new government-run health care system. They learned from Bill Clinton's immediate post-election action on gays in the military not to squander a new president's honeymoon period on divisive social legislation.

But also, by delaying, they can lull their pro-life opponents into thinking that FOCA has been tabled, while quietly building support for it in a stealth propaganda campaign that is already underway using major media outlets -- such as the Washington Post, which recently ran a piece in its "On Faith" section called "Why Fear FOCA?"

But with your help, HUMAN EVENTS will defeat the pro-abortionists' "stealth" media campaign with its own media blitzkrieg designed to counter pro-FOCA lies and propaganda with the facts.

Here's how it will work...

The main weapon in HUMAN EVENTS' media blitzkrieg will be an in-depth Special Report called, "The Facts About FOCA: Truth vs. Propaganda in the Battle Over the Most Radical Pro-Abortion Law in American History."

Written in consultation with the finest legal minds of our time, "The Facts About FOCA" will reveal how, despite pro-abortionists' attempts to soft-pedal its potential impact in order to ensure swift passage, the Freedom of Choice Act would:

  • Establish abortion as a "fundamental right," elevating it to the same status as the right to vote and the right to free speech -- going beyond any Supreme Court decision in enshrining unlimited abortion-on-demand into American law
  • Eliminate every restriction on abortion nationwide -- including 44 states' laws concerning parental involvement, 40 states' laws on restricting later-term abortions, 46 states' conscience protection laws for individual health care providers, 27 states' conscience protection laws for institutions, 38 states' bans on partial-birth abortions, 33 states' laws on requiring counseling before an abortion, and 16 states' laws concerning ultrasounds before an abortion
  • Compel taxpayer funding of abortions through state and federal welfare programs, federal employee insurance plans, and in military hospitals.
  • Force faith-based hospitals and healthcare facilities to perform abortions
  • Force doctors and nurses to provide counseling and referral for abortions
But creating "The Facts About FOCA" is just the beginning. HUMAN EVENTS will then publicize and distribute it on a massive scale, both in print versions and online, to provoke a massive outpouring of voter outrage that will stop this evil law from being enacted.
Included among the activists, opinion-makers, and other influential citizens to whom HUMAN EVENTS will distribute "The Facts About FOCA" will be:
  • Pro-life, conservative, and/or Republican activist groups on HUMAN EVENTS' own extensive nationwide list, with an invitation to help spread the word by ordering and distributing inexpensive bulk reprints of the report
  • Top editors, reporters, and syndicated columnists on every major metropolitan and regional paper in America, plus many local ones. HUMAN EVENTS will give them blanket advance permission to reproduce the report in whole or in part, without paying royalties
  • Talk-radio hosts in every radio market in the country, from Rush Limbaugh on down. Again, HUMAN EVENTS will allow them to quote from it as extensively as they wish, at no cost
  • TV news editors, anchors, and reporters at all the networks and cable news channels, as well as local affiliates
  • All 435 members of the U.S. House and Senate, with additional copies for their staff members and committee aides
  • More than 150,000 dedicated HUMAN EVENTS readers
And you, of course, will be first to receive "The Facts About FOCA" -- no one will get it before you do!

Can HUMAN EVENTS do it? - YES - because they've done it before

In 2004, HUMAN EVENTS helped an obscure organization with no money known as the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth publicize their claims about John Kerry. They had planned a commercial for a small number of local TV markets. But before it even ran, HUMAN EVENTS posted the ad on its website and leaked it to Matt Drudge -- then sent out hundreds of thousands of email messages calling attention to it over several weeks.

Result? Tens of millions of people were able to view an ad that otherwise would have reached a few hundred thousand at best. That, in turn, helped make a #1 New York Times bestseller out of Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, published by HUMAN EVENTS' sister company, Regnery -- provoking the New York Times itself to concede, "If John Kerry loses the presidential election, Unfit for Command, by John E. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi, will go down as a chief reason." He did, and it was.

I promise you, HUMAN EVENTS can accomplish the same sort of thing with "The Facts About FOCA."

But They Need YOUR Help

Creating and distributing "The Facts About FOCA" on a massive, nationwide scale will not come cheap. But it will be worth every penny if it helps defeat this deadly and freedom-destroying legislation.

It wouldn't be fair to pass on that cost to HUMAN EVENTS readers by hiking subscription rates. And unlike most liberal publications, they receive no support from big corporations or foundations -- for whom they're about as "politically incorrect" as you can get.

Which leaves people like you -- dedicated conservatives who share not only HUMAN EVENTS' pro-life principles, but their commitment to making an impact on the great political struggles of our day.
It's going to be tough, but I believe we can do it. Your donation will help HUMAN EVENTS "fight the good fight" against FOCA, and support it in its ongoing mission to promote limited government, individual liberty, and traditional values.

And to express their gratitude for your donation of just $75 or more, HUMAN EVENTS will send you a complimentary hardcover copy of The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life, written by National Review senior editor Ramesh Ponnuru.

Of course, any amount you send will be greatly appreciated -- and they'll send you a copy of their special report, "The Facts About FOCA," to thank you for your contribution big or small.

Donate now so we can bring "The Facts About FOCA" to the American public -- and stop the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" in its tracks.

Best Regards,
Mike Huckabee

Obama's Recipe For Change Not My Cup of Tea

I had no idea how important this week's nationwide anti-tax tea parties were until hearing liberals denounce them with such ferocity. The New York Times' Paul Krugman wrote a column attacking the tea parties, apologizing for making fun of "crazy people." It's OK, Paul, you're allowed to do that for the same reason Jews can make fun of Jews.

On MSNBC, hosts Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow have been tittering over the similarity of the name "tea parties" to an obscure homosexual sexual practice known as "tea bagging." Night after night, they sneer at Republicans for being so stupid as to call their rallies "tea bagging."

Every host on Air America and every unbathed, basement-dwelling loser on the left wing blogosphere has spent the last week making jokes about tea bagging, a practice they show a surprising degree of familiarity with.

Except no one is calling the tea parties "tea bagging" -- except Olbermann and Maddow. Republicans call them "tea parties."

But if the Republicans were calling them "tea-bagging parties," the MSNBC hosts would have a fantastically hilarious segment for viewers in San Francisco and the West Village and not anyplace else in the rest of the country. On the other hand, they're not called "tea-bagging parties." (That, of course refers to the cocktail hour at Barney Frank's condo in Georgetown.)

You know what else would be hilarious? It would be hilarious if Hillary Clinton's name were "Ima Douche." Unfortunately, it's not. It was just a dream. Most people would wake up, realize it was just a dream and scrap the joke. Not MSNBC hosts.

The point of the tea parties is to note the fact that the Democrats' modus operandi is to lead voters to believe they are no more likely to raise taxes than Republicans, get elected and immediately raise taxes.

Apparently, the people who actually pay taxes consider this a bad idea.

Obama's biggest shortcoming is that he believes the things believed by all Democrats, which have had devastating consequences every time they are put into effect. Among these is the Democrats' admiration for raising taxes on the productive.

All Democrats for the last 30 years have tried to stimulate the economy by giving "tax cuts" to people who don't pay taxes. Evidently, offering to expand welfare payments isn't a big vote-getter.

Even Bush had a "stimulus" bill that sent government checks to lots of people last year. Guess what happened? It didn't stimulate the economy. Obama's stimulus bill is the mother of all pork bills for friends of O and of Congressional Democrats. ("O" stands for Obama, not Oprah, but there's probably a lot of overlap.)

And all that government spending on the Democrats' constituents will be paid for by raising taxes on the productive.

Raise taxes and the productive will work less, adopt tax shelters, barter instead of sell, turn to an underground economy -- and the government will get less money.

The perfect bar bet with a liberal would be to wager that massive government deficits in the '80s were not caused by Reagan's tax cuts. If you casually mentioned that you thought Reagan's tax cuts brought in more revenue to the government -- which they did -- you could get odds in Hollywood and Manhattan. (This became a less attractive wager in New York this week after Gov. David Paterson announced his new plan to tax bar bets.)

The lie at the heart of liberals' mantra on taxes -- "tax increases only for the rich" -- is the ineluctable fact that unless taxes are raised across the board, the government won't get its money to fund layers and layers of useless government bureaucrats, none of whom can possibly be laid off.

How much would you have to raise taxes before any of Obama's constituents noticed? They don't pay taxes, they engage in "tax-reduction" strategies, they work for the government, or they're too rich to care. (Or they have off-shore tax shelters, like George Soros.)

California tried the Obama soak-the-productive "stimulus" plan years ago and was hailed as the perfect exemplar of Democratic governance.

In June 2002, the liberal American Prospect magazine called California a "laboratory" for Democratic policies, noting that "California is the only one of the nation's 10 largest states that is uniformly under Democratic control."

They said this, mind you, as if it were a good thing. In California, the article proclaimed, "the next new deal is in tryouts." As they say in show biz: "Thanks, we'll call you. Next!"

In just a few years, Democrats had turned California into a state -- or as it's now known, a "job-free zone" -- with a $41 billion deficit, a credit rating that was slashed to junk-bond status and a middle class now located in Arizona.

Democrats governed California the way Democrats always govern. They bought the votes of government workers with taxpayer-funded jobs, salaries and benefits -- and then turned around and accused the productive class of "greed" for wanting not to have their taxes raised through the roof.

Having run out of things to tax, now the California legislature is considering a tax on taxes. Seriously. The only way out now for California is a tax on Botox and steroids. Sure, the governor will protest, but it is the best solution ...

California was, in fact, a laboratory of Democratic policies. The rabbit died, so now Obama is trying it on a national level.

hat's what the tea parties are about.

Help Chuck DeVore Defeat Barbara Boxer in 2010

Last week the only man standing between Californians and $70 billion in new taxes was Chuck DeVore.

In a principled stand, Chuck decried massive tax hikes on hard-working families in the Golden State, resigned his leadership position in protest, and blasted the Assembly's deal:  "This proposed agreement strikes at the heart of our longtime opposition to tax increases. Excessive taxation both harms the economy and robs hardworking Californians of a portion of their liberty. Placing our Caucus squarely in line with tax increases also demoralizes our supporters - people who were counting on us to hold the line.

"For these reasons, I believe it is appropriate for me to resign as Chief Republican Whip, effective immediately. I can no longer participate as a leader on a team that is preparing to make a fundamental mistake of colossal proportions. For the sake of California I hope I am wrong - however, I fear I am right and that this tax increase and budget deal will result in more harm to the Golden State than good."

Chuck DeVore showed his true colors, as a Republican who places principle above position. He marked himself as one of the emerging bright lights of the next conservative ascendancy. In stepping down, he stepped up -- and it won't be the last time.

This past week President Obama signed into law a massive "stimulus" package, passed by partisan liberals in Washington, that jeopardizes our fiscal future and squanders our children's inheritance. We can't afford to take a chance on tepid and untried leaders.  We need real conservatives with resolve who will represent us in Washington.  We need Chuck DeVore in the United States Senate.

Please consider making a donation to the Chuck DeVore campaign today and help unseat Barbara Boxer.

Thank you,
The Chuck DeVore Campaign

NRA Reduces Membership Price for Human Events Readers

Dear Human Events Reader,

The United States of America in 1791 was a new democracy, in a new land. That year 10 Amendments were added to our Constitution. Those Amendments are known today as the Bill of Rights. A formal statement that the people shall have unalienable freedoms and that congress shall make no laws against those freedoms.

Amendment II
A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

President Obama’s Chicago, House Speaker Pelosi’s San Francisco and Attorney General Holder’s Washington, D.C. are a reflection of what they think of the 2nd Amendment. That it is just fine to infringe upon, impede and restrict your right to keep and bear arms.

Are these the officials you trust to protect your Constitutional rights?
Are these the people that will protect our 2nd Amendment?

Who will protect our Constitutional freedom? We the people. Through our strength in numbers we can send a message to those that disregard our 2nd Amendment will not be tolerated.

This is an invitation from Human Events, to you, to join the National Rifle Association. Our Founding Fathers pledged their blood, their treasure and their sacred honor. We can honor that pledge today with our membership in the organization that has protected our 2nd Amendment freedom since 1871 – the NRA.

Join, renew your membership or give the gift of membership. This is the single most important thing you can do to protect the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution.

No Stimulus - Sign This Petition

Dear Taxpayer,

Will you join me in taking a stand in the first major policy battle of President Obama's Administration?

Stop the Pelosi-Reid-Obama Trillion Dollar Spending Bill, Sign Our Online NO Stimulus Petition TODAY- Click Here

Earlier today in the U.S. Senate we suffered a difficult defeat as the $838 billion senate version of the Pelosi-Reid-Obama spending bill passed the senate with 61 votes.  While today's vote is a disappointing setback we cannot be discouraged.  Much of this fight still lies ahead in the next few days.

Despite today’s passage in the Senate, this fight is far from over!

The bill will still have to go to conference to work out differences between the House and Senate versions, before coming back to both chambers for another vote.  They will fight to add back as much pork as possible, including brand new pork not in either the House or Senate version.

You can fight back today by clicking here and joining the growing army of taxpayers saying NO by signing Americans for Prosperity's petition to stop this disastrous trillion-dollar debt scheme.

We've got to keep raising awareness and increase the pressure against this spending and debt outrage. Thanks to the help of our signers forwarding this to their friends and family, calling talk radio, and promoting it on the Internet, we've blown past 200,000 signed petitions!

Just what is wrong with this bill?

  • Under the auspices of a “Comparative Effectiveness Review” the package heavily funds the first steps towards the government-mandated rationing of health care and tramples your right to medical privacy.
  • The so-called “Stimulus Package” is being sold to taxpayers as an investment in useful infrastructure like roads and bridges. But the facts prove otherwise. Only 3.6% of the scheme’s $838 billion price tag would actually go to real, practical infrastructure projects--roads and bridges.
  • This trillion-dollar debt and spending scheme will provide little or no stimulus, but will put each and every American household in at least $6,700 of new debt, to be paid by our children and grandchildren.

It is critical that we send a loud and clear message to DC politicians that ordinary citizens simply cannot afford the crushing burden and devastating consequences of this initiative.

Please act today to make your voice heard -- and encourage your friends and family to do the same -- by signing AFP's petition here.

Sincerely,
Tim Phillips

President, Americans for Prosperity

The Distemper of the Times

With reports circulating of its imminent demise, The New York Times announced in January that it had found a white knight.

Sort of. For the knight in question, who already owns 6 percent of the sinking Times and was investing $250 million in notes carrying 14 percent interest, was Carlos Slim. Reputedly the richest man in the world, taking the title from Bill Gates in 2007, Carlos is not so highly regarded in his own country.

In Mexico, according to Forbes, "the media and the masses long have held a sneaking suspicion that there is something shady about Slim. He is described as a rapacious monopolist who built his empire on cozy ties to Mexican presidents ... ."

For this column, however, the issue is not how Carlos bought up the Mexican telephone monopoly, but whether this Big Enchilada has bought up Andrew Rosenthal's editorial page.

For, two weeks after Carlos' bailout cash arrived, Rosenthal's page launched a hysterical attack on the patriots' movement that seeks to halt the invasion of the United States from Mexico.

Targets: my sister Bay; our American Cause foundation and its executive director, Marcus Epstein; Peter Brimelow, the author of a seminal work on U.S. immigration, "Alien Nation"; Jim Pinkerton of Fox News, a White House aide to Bush I; Fox's Bill O'Reilly; and this writer.

In the Times' editorial, "Return of the Nativists," Brimelow is said to run an "extremist Website" (VDARE.com) where he and I post "musings about racial dilution and the perils facing white people." Pinkerton was behind the "racist Willie Horton ads." Epstein holds "white-supremacist" views. And we all are into "racialist extremism" and "Latino-bashing," which
calls to mind "the days of the Know-Nothings and the Klan."

Racism "is all around us," wails the Times. And the nation has a "perpetual need for vigilance," even in this new "age of Obama."

What occasioned this wilding attack? A news conference at the National Press Club, where the Times reporter failed to show, and release of a dry report by Epstein that contends that GOP defeats in 2008 had nothing to do with the strong stand most Republicans took for border security.

The Times calls the report "nonsense." But the case is open and shut. Of 26 House Republicans who lost, Epstein found only one who was a strong border-control candidate defeated by a pro-amnesty Democrat. In every other GOP defeat, either the Democrat was tough on amnesty and border security or the Republican was wimpish.

That John McCain, who led the effort to put illegal aliens on a path to citizenship, got less than a third of the Hispanic vote shows that being pro-amnesty does not necessarily win the Hispanic vote. And the 70 percent of New Yorkers who rejected Eliot Spitzer's proposal to give driver's licenses to illegals, forcing Hillary Clinton to abandon her own governor, should tell even the obtuse Times which way the wind is blowing.

But rather than argue with us, the Times chose to slime us as racists and white supremacists. This is of a piece with the Times' sliming of the Californian electorate that voted against state recognition of homosexual marriage. To the Times, that 52-48 vote meant "right-wing forces, led by the Mormon Church," had "enshrined bigotry in the state's Constitution."

Both diatribes reveal much about the fall of a great newspaper

and the degeneration of a political philosophy that was once hegemonic in America. Liberalism has hardened into an ideology, a rabid religion that anathematizes any and all heretics.

To the Times' editorial writers, dissent from orthodoxy on illegal aliens or gay rights can only be explained by bigotry, hatred, racism or xenophobia in the hearts of the dissidents. To oppose the Times' agenda on social or moral issues is ascribed to mental illness or moral sickness.

Yet, as these negative views on homosexual marriage and illegal immigration remain mainstream views, the Times comes off, as it did in Sunday's sophomoric editorial, as loathing Middle America.

In its own mind, the Times is battling heroically the forces of hatred. Can it not, by rereading its own words, see the hatred in its own heart?

As Christ Himself said, Andrew, "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."

Let it be said. There is nothing wrong about Americans fighting to preserve the culture and country they grew up in. That is what patriotic conservatism is all about. And if the Times can understand and support the right of native tribes like the Navajo and Apache to preserve their unique character and culture, why this viral hatred of those of us who wish to preserve the Western and Christian character of America?

Why does the Times want to see our America destroyed? From what poisoned well comes this hatred of the America we love?
