It Does Make A Difference To Hillary… Now

The first order for Benghazi committee members: drawing up attack timeline… morning after Clinton-Obama secret lunch…

By Marion Algier – Ask Marion

What Difference Does it Make Hillary As much as Hillary and company try to pretend that Benghazi is no big deal, is old news and makes no difference to anybody, her ‘unofficial’ presidential campaign team seems very anxious to put the whole matter to bed… but it is the scandal that just won’t go away.

In fact, Benghazi now seems to make all the difference in the world to Hillary’s campaign, so much so that they want to get out in front of the press with their spin.  And Hillary started the process with a secret, off the official calendar, lunch with Obama on Thursday…

Can’t you just picture it now?  “So how are we going to spin this one to save both our hides?  And too bad we can’t sneak away like we did in 2008, after all, the Bilderberg is meeting this week”.

The Washington Times wrote

Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the White House on Thursday and had lunch with President Obama — a meeting that was not part of the president’s daily schedule and was only acknowledged by the White House after People magazine revealed it in a tweet.

The clandestine lunch between Mr. Obama and his former secretary of state and 2008 Democratic presidential primary rival was confirmed by the White House late Thursday afternoon, hours after it had taken place.

“The president enjoyed an informal, private lunch with Secretary Clinton at the White House this afternoon,” a White House official said after being asked about the rumored meeting.

People magazine tweeted about the lunch earlier in the afternoon, though the post was quickly deleted.

Following the White House’s confirmation of the meeting, another tweet on the magazine’s feed showed Mrs. Clinton posing for a picture with People writer Sandra Sobieraj Westfall.

“SS Westfall chats w/ @Hillary Clinton before her @WhiteHouse lunch. Hope she wasn’t late for @BarackObama!” the tweet reads.

Mrs. Clinton is widely expected to run for president in 2016. The former first lady also appears to embarking on something of a media blitz to promote her new book, “Hard Choices.” (Amazingly Hillary is still blaming the video for Benghazi in her book even though we all now know that blaming it on the video was all a lie… a cover-up.  Shame on us if we fall for this and even consider electing Hillary Clinton for President in 2016 or ever!)

Mrs. Clinton reportedly will sit down with Fox News’ Bret Baier and Greta Van Sustern on June 17, and also will be featured in a one-hour ABC special next month.

While Mrs. Clinton was at the White House, her potential 2016 Democratic rival was literally on the other side of the country.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden, also eyeing a presidential bid, attended a Democratic National Committee event in Seattle on Thursday.

Steven Dennis of Roll Call writes:

Knox — a member of the group of White House scribes who toil mostly without sunlight in the press quarters in the basement — suggested I look at his Twitter feed.

A secret meeting between the president and the woman currently favored in the polls to succeed him?

Would the White House that brags about its transparency really try to keep such a lunch secret?

Yup.

I sought to confirm — along with the rest of the White House press corps.

“The President enjoyed an informal, private lunch with Secretary Clinton at the White House this afternoon,” a White House official said belatedly and on background in response.

I also sent a complaint to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney about the lack of transparency by the White House regarding the lunch.

I noted that on July 29, 2013, (pictured above) Obama and Clinton had another private lunch and it was included on the public schedule. A private lunch with Mitt Romney in 2012 was also on the public schedule.

There’s no reason why this lunch shouldn’t have been on the public schedule either, at a minimum.

(The press corps has also been pushing for more access, including opportunities for news photographers and the pool to have the opportunity to witness newsworthy events and ask questions.)

Mrs. Clinton’s potential and logical Republican rival, if the GOP finds their brain, was at the Republican Leadership Conference, in New Orleans while this was going on…

Let us remember…

Clinton famously fainted and suffered a concussion in 2012, according to her aides, causing her to have to postpone testimony on Capitol Hill about the Benghazi terrorist attacks. Now she is insulted that Karl Rove questioned her health.

The Clintons are masters at handling and covering-up crisis.  They survived Bill’s impeachment and the Lewinsky scandal.  They survived Mogadishu and Hillary being fired from the Watergate Committee…. And they’ve survived  a lot lot more!

But not to worry… There is nothing to see here!  President Obama and Hillary were just having a nice friendly lunch.

The AD, ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aging… Inflammation and Nutrition Connection

“We live too short and we die too long!” …Dr. Myron Wentz

By Marion Algier – THITW and Ask Marion

The rate of occurrences of Alzheimer's-Dementia (AD), ADD, ADHD, Autism, and debilitating Aging symptoms are through the roof. Everyone I know either suffers from one of these conditions (themselves); has a child, grandchild, parent, or grandparent who is afflicted; or they know someone, if not several some-ones, within their close circle that suffers from one or more of these diseases and conditions.

We are drowning in epidemics…

Having become the caregiver for a father-in-law who suffers from Alzheimer’s as well as heart disease; a mother-in-law with RA and onset dementia, who is in complete denial about either of their conditions or her part in the development of those infirmities; and a husband who has developed several afflictions that are generally explained away as normal aging, this has all become very personal.  I have far too many friends and associates with children who suffer from ADD, ADHD, Autism… including Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and now I’m surrounded by the 80+ set, not to ponder the numbers and perhaps even the connection(s).

I have long believed that all these conditions and a lot more are related to a combination of diet, vaccines, too many meds, noise pollution and stress, etc…  a long list.  But we, who have become oblivious observers of our own lives have been sold ‘the official’ causes of these afflictions by Big Pharma, Big Agriculture, Big Business and a ruling class and their media minions who think they are smarter than we are or that we are ‘useless eaters’ just taking up space.

I recently went on the Adkins Diet to lose some weight I had slowly put on over several years and virtually over-night I noticed how much better I felt in general.  The Adkins diet had always worked for me when I needed to shed a few pounds, but this was the first time that I really took notice of how much better I felt while I was on it; perhaps it is my age or that I’m just more aware these days?  But I did a little more digging…

I am fairly stubborn!  My husband would say that is an understatement! So once I started my new eating regiment, I went 3+ months without ever cheating. But since, I have eaten carbs on a few special occasions and at a few events when I didn’t want to put anyone out.  Each time I noticed that I felt sluggish, tired or just a little out of sorts. Celiac Disease, requiring sufferers to eat gluten free, is also at epidemic proportions. And after Elizabeth Hasselbeck, formerly of The View and now co-host of Fox and Friends, appeared on The Factor as part of her book tour for The G-Free Diet: A Gluten-Free Survival Guide, Bill O’Reilly, not a Celiac sufferer, decided to give up wheat products to see if it would help him feel better in general.  He reported the same results that I had after going on Adkins.  He felt better and lost 20-pounds without changing anything else in his lifestyle… and he admits that since he doesn’t have a gluten allergy he does cheat once in awhile, but like me always feels a bit bloated or sluggish when he does.

Recently I watched a television program with Dr. Oz and then a day later I turned on PBS to find a special with Dr. David Perlmutter, a renowned neurologist, author and president of the Perlmutter Health Center. Perlmutter is known for advocating a functional and holistic approach toward treating brain disorders and is a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post, The Daily Beast and Mind Body Green.

At the Perlmutter Health Center, they deal with a variety of medical problems including arthritis, elevated cholesterol, bowel and digestive disorders, obesity, cardiovascular problems, respiratory disorders, including asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, environmental sensitivity, cancer and a wide variety of other illnesses as well as a long list of neurological problems including epilepsy, stroke, Parkinsonism, dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, dystonia, joint pain and inflammation, other movement disorders, and neuropathy.

Changing our dietary habits and the eating habits of our children could also help reduce the symptoms of ADD, ADHD and even Autism.

In the PBS special Dr. Perlmutter pulled together what I had discovered independently through my research and was actually feeling myself.  Bottomline: Wheat (gluten), carbs, and sugar are silently killing our brains, causing inflammation throughout our bodies and creating food induced hyperactivity thereby contributing to the “A“ epidemics:  Alzheimer’s-Dementia (AD), ADD, ADHD, Autism (ASD) and aging.

Dr. Perlmutter points out that most of what Americans have been told about eating from the food pyramid they taught us in school, to shifting everyone to low fat diets, to giving up eating eggs, and to putting half of America on cholesterol medicine is wrong.

We need to cut our carbs, gluten, and sugar and pay attention to the sources of our food, plus add more good fats into our diet.

Shop the outside aisles of the market and with the exceptions of a few spices, etc., check out and go home. Read the labels of everything pre-prepared, frozen, boxed or canned that you do consider buying. Put in a garden, using non-GMO seeds, and create a compost heap for fertilizer. (There are some amazing options even for apartment dwellers, window box herbs, and many cities and towns now have community garden plots.)  Eat less but better quality meat; try to buy wild or range grazed meat and poultry (and eggs) and wild and stream caught fish… or consider taking up hunting, fishing and gathering.  You can supplement your protein needs with legumes and nuts.

The book Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health (Cookbook) rightfully  blamed wheat for the American epidemic of obesity.  And Dr. Permutter’s book Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar -- Your Brain's Silent Killers deals specifically with the effects of too many carbs, wheat, and gluten on the brain.

grain brain book Looking at a Better Way

Dr. Perlmutter started looking at the role diet plays in brain health after he got tired of treating his patients’ symptoms with drugs, which at the time was the only tool in his arsenal. He describes it like trying to get rid of smoke while leaving the fire burning.

In the past decade he learned that the brain is extremely sensitive to the food we eat and that our diet plays a pivotal role in our brain health.

He also learned that brain cells do replace themselves, but once you have reached the Alzheimer’s stage it is too late.

Too Many Carbs, Too Little Fat

As we’ve moved towards a low-fat diet high in grains, the kind recommended in the USDA food pyramid below, we’ve traded in eating fat for eating more carbs. We have never before been exposed to this level of carbohydrate consumption in human history and this experiment is not going well.  Plus, much of the wheat, corn, and soy produced today has been genetically modified (GMO).

In a recent report on the 5-worst food companies there were 3 glaring occupants on the list: Monsanto, Nestle, and Coca Cola, that should jump out and cause everyone to both take note and do their homework.

food pyramid chart

High blood sugar levels correlate directly with brain shrinkage of the hippocampus, the seat of memory and the first target of Alzheimer’s. Perlmutter states quite emphatically that there is no treatment whatsoever for Alzheimer’s and that drugs flat-out don’t help.

If you begin to mentally lose it in your 60′s and 70′s, sometimes even earlier, it becomes very hard to reverse the trend, so it is much wiser to take steps to prevent mental decline sooner than later.

Excess carbs create inflammation and free radicals, two major causes of brain aging.

Perlmutter found in his practice that nothing is worse for your brain than a low-fat diet. It contains too many carbohydrates and too little brain-healthy fat. He promotes olive oil, coconut oil, butter, avocados, grass-fed meat, wild salmon, and eggs. (No margarine, trans fats or vegetable oil).  Have you ever thought about Canola Oil and asked yourself… what is a canola?

In his practice Dr. Permutter puts patients on a diet that is 50-60% good fats. The brain is 70% fat by dry weight and he finds this much fat is ideal. Glucose is considered the main fuel for the brain, but our brains are quite happy to burn fat which he refers to as a “super fuel” for the brain.

One of the biggest ongoing debates in nutrition is what are the best ratios of fat, carbs, and protein. Perlmutter cites a JAMA study that followed two groups for 12 months. One group was on the diet popularized by Dr. Atkins — a low carb/high fat/high protein diet. The second group followed Dr. Ornish’s low fat/low protein/high carbohydrate diet. This diet is identical to the ultra-low fat diet being promoted in the book Power Foods for the Brain.

For those of us who have been brainwashed into believing that low-fat is good, it may come as a shock that the people who followed the Atkins diet did better on all health markers including triglycerides, good cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.

Perlmutter reminds us to think of cholesterol as our brain’s friend. Low cholesterol levels increases the risk of suicide, depression, and dementia. The risk of dementia is reduced by 70% in those with high cholesterol. You read that right – high cholesterol reduces risk of dementia.

The Problem With Gluten

wheat in test tubesPerlmutter appreciates that the book Wheat Belly made the public aware of the profound modification of wheat itself.

In the past 50 years, wheat has been changed to contain up to 50 times more gluten than it did when our ancestors baked their first loaf of bread.

We are biologically unprepared to handle this big of a change in such a short period of time. For arguments sake, Dr. Perlmutter states that humans have been around for 2.6 million years yet didn’t start eating wheat and gluten in any form until about 10,000 years ago; a mere blip in our entire existence! Or .004% to be more precise.

Gluten is a protein most commonly associated with wheat but can also be found in other grains like rye, oats, and barley; prepared foods of all kinds; and even in medications.

It’s been known for decades that gluten can cause a long list of neurological problems including dementia, headaches, seizures, tremors, depression, memory loss, and epilepsy in those who are gluten-sensitive. But what hasn’t been realized until recently is how ubiquitous gluten sensitivity is. If eating gluten tears up your gut, you know you have a problem. But it turns out that most people have no obvious digestive upset from gluten, so this is not a reliable indicator of gluten sensitivity.

Grain Brain makes a solid case for how eating more grains and carbohydrates of all kinds, and less goods fats, is taking a toll on our collective brain health. And it offers suggestions for what you can do about it.

Additionally, Dr. Permutter points out the need for vitamin D in our diets and that when watching our diets, it is the glycemic index that we should be concerned with.  In an example, he points out that between the four foods: wheat bread, white bread, white sugar and a candy bar, that reality is quite different from what most people think. When looking at the glycemic index the worst choice of the four foods listed is the wheat bread, not the candy bar.  In fact, the candy bar, not that he is promoting eating candy, is the best choice out of that group which goes in this order: candy bar, white sugar, white bread, wheat bread… when looking at the glycemic index.

Perlmutter also talks about the worst breakfast choice, for anyone, being a glass of orange juice and a bowl of packaged cereal.  A glass of orange juice isn’t much different than having a coke for breakfast.  Then we add a bowl of additional sugar, gluten and preservatives = cereal, covered with milk (casein… see below) and sending our kids to school sugared and carbed up… And for children with ADD, ADHD or Autism (ASD) it is even worse, plus then we add drugs into the equation to theoretically calm them down, and we wonder why they can’t learn or why they act out.

Several recent studies published in the International Journal of Attention Disorders support a connection between ADD, ADHD and Autism and the broader eating patterns of a ‘Western-style’ diet as well. It has been know for quite some time that food coloring and dyes should be avoided by people with ADD and ADHD.  And according to Craig Kendall, author of The Asperger's Syndrome Survival Guide, gluten and casein free (GFCF) diets help overcome Asperger’s Syndrome symptoms, and symptoms of children suffering from any form of ASD, including improving their behavior. Casein is a protein found in milk. Proponents of a GFCF diet believe people with Autism have a "leaky gut," or intestine, which allows parts of gluten and casein to seep into the bloodstream and affect the brain and central nervous system. The belief is that this may actually lead to Autism or magnify its symptoms.

We need to cut our sugar levels by cutting out/down carbs, gluten and sugar and adding fat from good sources. (No margarine or vegetable oil). And we need to go back to a natural diet… vegetables, fruit (in moderation), seeds, nuts, natural fats, range raised meat and poultry, wild fish, and range-eggs.  And, the most important brain anti-oxidant is cholesterol.  That’s right… cholesterol.

Cholesterol, the most important brain anti-oxidant, has been taken out of our diets, like good fats.  It is imperative for natural brain function. Eggs are one of the best things we can eat and c-reactive protein causes inflammation and is a direct contributor to the development Alzheimer’s Disease, if you are pre-deposed or added to other factors. Yet the trends and diets that we have all been sold for decades now have us doing and consuming exactly the opposite says Dr. Permutter.

Dr. Oz, a former Oprah team-member… not sure of their present relationship, actually pointed out that with the coming of ObamaCare, if it is not ultimately scrapped or implodes on its own, there will be a need and a move toward more holistic and homeopathic treatments, alternative medicine and healthier eating; perhaps the only good thing that ObamaCare will bring. (Remember, Dr. Oz was a major part of the promotional team for the H1N1 vaccine, but his wife and daughters like the Obama girls, did not take that vaccine.) But now physicians like Dr. Oz with an array of featured guests and experts, plus others including Dr. Mercola, Dr. Sears and Dr. Perlmutter, who have always looked for alternatives are actively promoting natural solutions. People are increasingly looking to places like Sanoviv, an alternative, holistic and integrative health facility built in Rosarito, Mexico by Myron Wentz, Ph.D, a microbiologist and immunologist who invented the test kit for Epstein Barr and founded Gull Laboratories, USANA and Sanoviv, S.A. de C.V. (Sanoviv) …because the AMA wouldn’t allow it in the U.S.

Coffee is all of a sudden being promoted as a good thing, Oulong tea and peaches (without sugar) have anti-Cancer properties. Vinegar and pharmaceutical grade hydrogen peroxide have great healing powers. The list of natural cures and preventative remedies is endless and suddenly being promoted instead of destroyed or hidden. See Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice.

America, the winds of change are blowing; many of them not good but some offer some great possibilities amidst the destruction of what was the greatest healthcare system in the world at its core, at least before the Rockefellers and other corruptocrats got their hands on it.

I am not a health practitioner, but when my daughter developed ulcerative colitis we took her to Sanoviv, an alternative healthcare facility outside the United States. There is a place for surgery and some medications, but because of Big Pharma, Big Business, Big Agriculture and corruption, Americans are over medicated and sicker than they should be… Why?  So that they ultimately can be put on drugs or sold an agenda.  It is all about money and control! The information is out there; we all have to become more proactive and use the common sense that God gave us.  If it feels or sounds wrong or questionable… it probably is!

About the Author:  I am 61-years-young and am in perfect health (and yes, I am knocking on wood as I say that).  I have never been admitted to a hospital; I was delivered by a mid-wife.  I, as well as my children… the two and four-legged ones, only received the immunizations and vaccines that they absolutely needed; I did my homework in depth long before there was an Internet.  I, as well as my children, never ate store bought, pre-fabed, commercial baby food (or commercial pet food), let alone the glue they call formula that is given to most American babies these days. (Nor did I use baby wipes, floor and rug cleaners with chemicals in them or pesticides… I used old school warm water and mild soap instead of wipes, and nontoxic natural-based vinegar and orange oil type  cleaners and for pest control.)  I also have always done the majority of my marketing from the outer aisles of the grocery store. And even though we were suburb dwellers, my dad and brother hunted and fished and much of our other meat (now and when I was a child) was purchased from a butcher or supplier who guaranteed antibiotic and steroid free meat… and money was an object through much of my life so I learned to be creative.

I have only been to a doctor less than 20-times in my entire life if you do not count the well-baby checks and for the necessary shots I did get as a kid. I have only ever had one mammogram and 2 pap smears and I don’t get flu shots, nor have I ever been on any long-term medications and probably have taken no more than a few bottles of aspirin or the like in 60+ years… and I am just now going through menopause. The only (out-patient) surgery I have had was when I slipped on some black ice and broke my ankle.

My daughter was perfectly healthy as well, at least until she had to have what seemed like an endless batch of shots to travel around the world with the Semester at Sea (SAS) program and after getting one last shot on-board (from an unknown source) after a Japanese Encephalitis outbreak about halfway through the sail, she came back with severe ulcerative colitis.  Coincidence?  We took her to Sanoviv.

My husband, who pretty much beat up his body through sports… football, baseball, basketball, snow and water skiing, racquetball, competitive swimming, etc., has recently developed related health issues but it seems to be the inflammation that has attacked those previous injuries and weak spots.

I consider myself lucky in many ways and was blessed to be born healthy and to have parents who made all the right food and health choices for me and my siblings… at least until we were old enough to be able to follow their advice or choose to make our own wrong decisions.

My mother always cooked at home; going out to dinner was a rare treat.  We never drank soda.  And doctors & dentists were visited only as needed.  As a side job, my father even cleaned the office for our family doctor, an OD until forced to become an MD, who agreed with that philosophy; a pattern I carried through with my own children.  None of us kids smoked, we drank in moderation when we got old enough and nobody did drugs. I played softball, tennis and snow skied but never felt the need to over-tax my body or to fry my skin in the sun. We ate in moderation so although I love sweets, I have only been on a diet 4-times in my life (3 of which were on the Adkins diet after age 40), and I now plan to stay on a modified version of that diet for life.

*My in-laws on the other hand, even with their new found knowledge fight me daily about eating margarine instead of butter; over-salting their food… even though my father-in-law suffers from heart disease and is suppose to be on a salt-free diet; they seemingly fell for every new campaign that came down the pike throughout their lives; and they refuse to entertain the idea of cutting down on the medications and number of doctor visits.  The system of eldercare has been an eye-opening journey in itself and the affect of the systematic brainwashing on that generation is both frightening and phenomenal.

Unless you are born with a serious defect or disease or are injured in later life, I truly believe that our choices and those we make for our children define our health, especially if we make the wrong choices or don’t do our homework!  And therefore I am writing a new book, “ The Common Sense Path to Good Health”.  Somewhere along the way we have lost our common sense in far too many areas!

Book(s) of the Week: One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America's Future By Ben Carson M.D.

Dear Reader,

In February 2013 I gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Standing a few feet from President Obama, I warned my fellow citizens of the dangers facing our country and called for a return to the principles that made America great.

Many Americans heard and responded, but our nation’s decline has continued. Today the danger is greater than ever before, and I have never shared a more urgent message than I do now.

Our growing debt and deteriorating morals have driven us far from the founders’ intent. We’ve made very little progress in basic education. Obamacare threatens our health, liberty, and financial future. Media elitism and political correctness are out of control.

Worst of all, we seem to have lost our ability to discuss important issues calmly and respectfully regardless of party affiliation or other differences. As a doctor rather than a politician, I care about what works, not whether someone has an (R) or a (D) after his or her name. We have to come together to solve our problems.

Knowing that the future of my grandchildren is in jeopardy because of reckless spending, godless government, and mean-spirited attempts to silence critics left me no choice but to write this book. I have endeavored to propose a road out of our decline, appealing to every American’s decency and common sense.

If each of us sits back and expects someone else to take action, it will soon be too late. But with your help, I firmly believe that America may once again be “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Sincerely,
Ben Carson

Palin is first in the national survey with 9%, followed by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and former Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice with 8%. Michelle Obama is fourth with 2% of the vote.

In other national polls, Palin has the highest favorability rating among Republican presidential primary voters. If Sarah does not run in 2016, her influence and potential endorsement could tip the GOP presidential contest as the GOP may be the most split from within in the past 40 years.

Pro-Vet… Pro-Military "Rolling Thunder" Rally Comes to DC As VA Fails Veterans

This weekend, the VA scandal, which erupted in April when it was reported that 40 veterans may have died waiting for care in Phoenix, AZ., is on a lot of veterans' minds.

"Were all willing to give our life, but then they treat you like garbage when you come back," one veteran tells WTOP. "You know there's always money for the war."

Rolling Thunder, a biker rally in Washington, D.C. created during the Vietnam War to honor American veterans, comes to the Capitol during Memorial Day weekend during the VA health scandal in which the government has been falsifying information about their ability to help America's veterans.

The rally is held every year during Memorial Day, and they expect over 500,000 motorcyclists to participate this year.

As WTOP reported:

rollingthunder (Kelley Vlahos)WASHINGTON -- Amid a scandal in which a number of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care facilities across the country are accused of covering up long appointment times while sick veterans wait for care, the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride and rally is coming to town.

This is the ride's 27th year, and like clockwork, the Washington D.C. area expects to see tens of thousands of these bikers, flags flying, roll in over the course of the next two days.

The organization was formed in 1987 to remember and support the return of Vietnam War American missing in action (MIA) and prisoners of war (POW), but has since morphed into a massive advocacy event for supporting veterans of all wars. Bikers are expected to travel into the city all weekend for a number of events, culminating in a coordinated ride from the Pentagon to the National Mall for a rally on Sunday. More on the schedule, here.

The Rolling Thunder rally is really a sight to behold if you are in Washington over Memorial Day weekend any year. This year, as the government fails our veterans, their support and our support of this event, might have been more important than ever.

The Rolling Thunder event is and has been supported by Americans from all walks of like.  palin_campaign_bus

In 2011, Sarah Palin embarked on a One Nation Tour of historical sites that were key to the formation, survival, and growth of the United States of America. The tour originated in Washington DC and proceeded north up the east coast.  Governor Sarah Palin and her husband Todd kicked things off by taking part in the “Rolling Thunder” motorcycle ride, where they were joined by Lt. Col Allen West.

Memorial Day 2014

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It was formerly known as Decoration Day, originating after the American Civil War to commemorate both the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Unfortunately, this Memorial Day Weekend should weigh even heavier on all our hearts than usual considering the Veterans Affairs Scandal and the fact that war hero Sgt. Andrew Tahmorressi sits in a Mexican jail because he made the wrong turn.

The number of Veterans who have died as well as the number of Veteran’s facilities involved keeps going up, but so does the number of whistleblowers in the VA scandal… so there is hope that this scandal could finally be ‘the’ Obama scandal and cover-up deal breaker.

Unbelievably the Senate Democrats blocked the bill to hold the VA accountable on Thursday 05.22.14, before leaving for their Memorial Day Weekend break.  Call Harry Reid, Bernie Sanders and your personal Senator and let them know how wrong that was and that you will remember this vote come election time.  Demand action!

National Memorial Day Concert 2011 in Washington, DCOne of the highlights of Memorial Weekend is always the the PBS Memorial Day Concert Special from DC.  It is a must watch at our house!!  This year, the 25th Anniversary show, co-hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, will be aired on Sunday, May 25th at 8p.m. ET.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service, but many Americans honor all their dead on Memorial Day. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

As we make plans to enjoy the long weekend… we, as a family, look for opportunities and activities to focus on the meaning of Memorial Day. We especially made sure we did that when our kids were young, including a stop for Sunday service at our church who always dedicated their entire Memorial Day service to celebrating America and those who protect(ed) her.

It is so easy to get wrapped up in activities and events that are not related to the meaning of Memorial Day or patriotism in any way… After all, it is the weekend for Americans to take their first mini-vacation of the summer season; participate in a string of activities from picnics to bar-b-ques, hikes & rides to pet events and block parties; to taking trips to amusement parks now on their summer schedules and watching the Indianapolis 500; to getting to their postponed projects around the house or taking out the ‘summer toys’ including boats, sea-doos, motor bikes and ATV’s; and to attend graduations… And before they know it, the weekend is gone and too often nobody even mentioned or thought about the reason for the Memorial Day holiday and their 3 to 4 day weekend.

I am a first generation American immigrant from a family full of more recent immigrants and one of my fondest childhood memories is of family events where I would sit and soak up the conversation and stories.

My mother was German and served in the (German) Red Cross during WWII where she met my father, an Austrian soldier from a medical unit. They married in an American prisoner of war camp after the war (where the Americans made my mother a wedding gown out of gauze from the medical unit supplies).  Both their families were part of the underground.

My grandparents went through WWI in Germany and Austria. My uncle, his brother, as well as my father-in-law served in the Korean War and their fathers served in the U.S. army in WWI. It was fascinating because we heard personal stories and battle accounts from several perspectives.

And since that time we have added relatives and close friends who have served in Viet Nam, Somalia, the first and second Iraq conflicts and now in Afghanistan.  These types of discussions are a rich source and perfect way of combining knowledge of and perspectives on U.S. and World history, family history and traditions to pass along to future generations.

There is no greater country on earth than the United States of America and there is nobody that deserves more credit for the great lives we live and the freedoms we all enjoy than our Founding Fathers and our troops who have fought for us, sacrificed and often given their lives to keep us safe and free for over 235 years, since before we were a nation. Unfortunately we are no longer teaching history in our schools and much of what they do teach is slanted, a mere glance or has been re-written. As citizens, parents, grandparents and patriots, it is our job to inform ourselves and to reverse the present cycle by filling in the gaps and demanding that our schools return to teaching history from “original sources” and passing it on.

If you can get there, a trip to Washington D.C. and Arlington Cemetery is the ideal Memorial Day (4th of July or Veterans Day) trip or summer vacation destination. Some other great Memorial Day Weekend activities are visiting a Presidential Library or civil war battlefield, visiting a veteran’s grave locally or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, reading a book about one of the wars we have fought in or about the founding of our nation and sharing about it over dinner or at an event. In recent years, Washington D.C. begins its Memorial Day celebration with the arrival of the rolling thunder. President George W. Bush has ridden with hero vets in the Wounded Warriors Mountain Bike Ride several times.

Watching a movie or movies (hopefully made with some accuracy) about our rich past including the U.S. involved wars or conflicts and then perhaps following up on the history behind it (them) can be another fun as well as educational activity. We all know that even the best films throw in a little “Hollywood” slant and sizzle (unfortunately sometimes too much), but the right movies can be a great place to spark our children’s interest in history and a great jumping off point for us and them to learn more!

This Memorial Day Weekend, as times are tough and money is tight for many, might also be a great weekend to stay local and participate in or just attend the city parade or event, visit a nearby cemetery, catch the PBS Memorial Day Special from DC and spend your time at home with family, friends (or even alone) eating some comfort food, reading a good worthwhile book related to the holiday or our history and/or creating your own film festival of movies. Below are a few suggestions to start with. There are many more that you can add to the list. One of my favorite movies for both Memorial Day and the 4th of July is Yankee Doodle Dandy about George M. Cohan, starring James Cagney. It is a musical that some might say is a bit corny, but it highlights the patriotic music of our country and somewhat balances out the serious and somber war movies. The songs therein were songs every American child learned in school and every American could sing until recent years.

A few movie suggestions (always good and great for Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Veterans Day Weekends):

Saving Private Ryan (Blu-Ray)(WWII): Is at the top of almost everyone’s ‘best’ war movie or movie from that era list.

The Hunt for Red October (Blu-Ray) (cold war): This cold-war submarine flick is a must for author Clancy fans, starring Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery.

Tunes of Glory (post-WWII): A well-regarded 1960 film starring Alec Guinness and John Mills in post-war Scotland.

Das Boot (Blu-Ray) (WWII): A claustrophobic thriller set aboard a German submarine.

Hope and Glory (WWII): Funny and touching, it tells the story of the British home-front in World War II.

Danger UXB (WWII) (hard to find): A TV series from my mom’s post-Brideshead Revisited phase. It also takes place on the British home-front with a squad in charge of defusing unexploded German bombs (“UXBs”).

The Bridge on the River Kwai (WWII, pictured above): An all-time classic, again starring Alec Guiness and William Holden. A great collection for WWII buffs is the WWII 60th Anniversary Collection (The Guns of Navarone/From Here to Eternity/The Bridge on the River Kwai) (Includes Collectible Scrapbook)

Mrs. Miniver (WWII): More from the British home-front, starring Greer Garson.

The War – PBS 7-Part Special Film By Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (WWII): A “Peoples History” of WWII with all original footage and photos.

Lawrence of Arabia (WWI): Another classic, and one of my favorite “see it on the big screen” type of movie.

Letters from Iwo Jima (Blu-Ray) (WWII): Clint Eastwood’s deeply thoughtful look at the Japanese perspective of World War II. And the companion piece, Flags of Our Fathers (Blu-Ray).

M*A*S*H (Korean War): Robert Altman’s black comedy that spurred the long-running TV series, which is also available on DVD now.

Gallipoli (WWI): Not exactly uplifting, but a powerful drama.

Joyeux Noel (WWI): Another one from the Great War. It’s based on a true event in which opposing armies take a respite for the holiday. (Special Collection) I remember my dad telling stories like this from WWII.

Platoon (Viet Nam War): Best Picture of the Year Oscar Winner (1986) that was part of Oliver Stone’s trilogy of Vietnam War films, also including Born on the Fourth of July (1989) — winner of two Academy Awards and Heaven & Earth (1993)

The Patriot (Blu-Ray) (Revolutionary War): An emotional, vivid, and palpable story about a South Carolina Family during the Revolutionary War with an excellent cast including Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger.

Black Hawk Down (Somalia Conflict): Depicting the Battle of Mogadishu, a raid integral to the United States’ effort to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

North & South (Civil War mini-series): An epic series with Patrick Swayze and Kirstie Alley.

Charlie Wilson’s War (CIA Operations – Afghanistan): Texas congressman Charlie Wilson’s covert dealings in Afghanistan, where his efforts to assist rebels in their war with the Soviets have some unforeseen and long-reaching effects.

The Hurt Locker (Iraq-Afghanistan Conflicts) The little film that beat out the mega money blockbuster; won the 2010 Best Picture of the Year Oscar.

The 2013 award season was full of historical films outlining valor and patriotism: Argo, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty are all award winning films from 2012.

Argo (CIA Operations – Iran): A dramatization of the 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran.

Lincoln (Civil War Era): Covers the final four months of Lincoln’s life, focusing on the President’s efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution passed by the United States House of Representatives.

Zero Dark Thirty (War on Terror): Billed as “the story of history’s greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous man”, the film dramatizes the United States operation that found and killed Osama bin Laden leader of al-Qaeda.

American Soldier: The Complete History of U.S. Wars : As Seen On PBS : Complete 4 Disc Box Set -With Bonus : A Historical Overview Of American Weapons

Others worth a mention including some of my own favorites: Patton, The Clock, The Great Escape, Stalag 17, Casablanca, The Guns of Navarone, The Deer Hunter, Glory, Breaker Morant (hard to find DVD (VHS), We Were Soldiers, Midway, Dr. Strangelove, Or…, Buffalo Soldiers, Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Forgotten Grave, The True Story of the Fighting Sullivans…, All Quiet on the Western Front, Band of Brothers, John Adams, Gone with the Wind… my favorite movie of all times.

Some great books to start or re-start your journey through America’s history with are: The Real George Washington; The Original Argument, A Patriot’s History of the United States…, Original Intent, Giants, The 5000 Year Leap, Glenn Beck’s Common Sense, The Greatest Generation (on Kindle), War Letters, Being George Washington and Killing Lincoln.
